@engineer,
Sandernista is a term like Clintonista, and it is used. The connotation is in the eye of the beholder.

@Lash,
I haven't read every post, but I don't think anyone here has used Sanderista to describe a Sanders supporter. As for connotation, I don't think I have ever seen Clintonista used in what I would consider anything but a negative way. That said, I've been called a lot worse on the Internet than Clintonista or Bernie-bot. If this is all we have left to argue about, I guess we should give up on issues.

@engineer,
The Sandinstas were the good guys. That why the Clash named their album after them.

@engineer,

I think once the two campaigns stop throwing hay makers at each other, the partisans will calm down. I doubt there is anything that Clinton can do to impact the most outspoken of her fans anymore than she could control the PUMA crowd eight years ago.

Bernie's campaign has been trying to reign in their most vociferous fans. E.g. Sanders’ chief online communicator Mike Casca, has tweeted this:
“if you support @berniesanders, please follow the senator’s lead and be respectful when people disagree with you”
https://twitter.com/cascamike/status/691844891652001792?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

I think this kind of things can make a difference. I don't know if the Clinton campaign has issued similar messages.

@ehBeth,
Maybe not, although nobody can tell what would have happened if he didn't have twitted that... I still think that political leaders need to set the tone and tell their online followers that some behaviors project an ugly image of the candidate and his campaign, and/or are counter-productive. It's their loss if they don't do it.

Ok, now can we get to Bernie? His chances of winning are really almost zero. As usual, Nate Silvers has it down to numbers of what it would take now for Bernie to pull off a miracle.

Quote:
Sanders’s Path To The Nomination Is Steeper Than Ever

The Upshot’s cool model has Sanders eventually winning about 110 delegates in New York, which is well short of the 128 he’d need to keep up with his (increasingly difficult) path to a pledged delegate majority. Here’s what now we calculate as Sanders’s least-implausible path to 2,026 pledged delegates, assuming he earns 110 from New York tonight.

After tonight, Sanders would have to win California by almost 20 points, and Pennsylvania and New Jersey by around 10 points, to eventually claim the majority of pledged delegates. Even though Sanders has made up ground with Clinton over the course of the campaign, results like those would be quite a shock.

source

So assuming Sanders comes up short, what will Sanders supporters do when he concedes? Suppose Hillary makes an all out effort to be inclusive and gracious in her victory, will it make a difference in those who have said they will never vote for Hillary? I can understand if you live in a state where it will conceivably make little or no difference, but even those who live in states where it will make a difference might feel the never Hillary thing as well. In which case, they would only be giving the Presidency over to a candidate who has the complete opposing view of Sanders. What can Hillary do to reach them? She can't go back in time and erase her speeches where she made so much money, she can't give the donations back, she either will need it or has already spent it. She can't promise free colleges as it would be virtually impossible to keep. I doubt she will go against her core positions which differ her from Sanders, nor should she, after all, she will have won with those positions. The way I see it, Sander supporters will have to either stick to their guns and give over to republicans or accept those differences and end up with a democrat who will at least work towards a lot of Sander's goals.

@Olivier5,
did you read the comments following his tweet? a group of Mr Sanders supporters was really unhappy with his rep's suggestion.

there's definitely an upside and a downside to having passionate supporters

So, I've been confused about somethings. I've been on A2K a long time (but often sporadically) and I've heard people reference Lash's liberal credentials and claim that she's switched sides. I honestly couldn't remember, so I did some googling today back to some posts in 2004. Found some interesting stuff; maybe some should take a gander.

I just reviewed one thread (the Bush Supporters can Gloat Here Thread) and only made it to about page 150 (out of 350+). Lots of insight here though.

Here are direct links to posts from our REPUBLICAN friend Lash:

Recent news items indicate that Sanders was too much of a bum to even make it as a hippie:

@maporsche,
Not denying any of those previous posts, but I do believe (and have seen first hand) that people can be reached by transformational figures. I saw one rabid right winger convert completely over during the 2008 election cycle. Possibly Sanders was that figure here. It might all be an act, but it really doesn't matter. Whatever opinion Lash posts should stand alone. If we can't refute them, it really doesn't matter what she said in the past.

@ehBeth,
Yes, I did and found it sad. Not sure passion is the problem. One can be passionate and civil. The Internet draws the worse out of some people. Group-thinking, us-vs-them-posturing and ganging-up dynamics are another factor. And then, american (and european) politics are becoming more factious and aggressive in part because of the deterioration of trust in the democratic system. Modern democracies are increasingly rigged and/or stalled by private interests and special concerns. Hence the growing hatred for the "establishment".

@maporsche,
Wow! Thanks, maporsche! You've told me all I need to know. I had a measure of sympathy for lash, but no longer. So, we have a wolf in sheep's clothing. She no longer has any credibility.

Well, lash, how about it? Why the great change? Isn't it interesting that Karl Rove has channeled financial contributions to your candidate? (No, I don't have a dog in this fight. I won't be voting this fall.)

Let me see now. . . . Not too long ago, you objected to my calling Clarence Thomas an Uncle Tom. I didn't know you were a big fan of the opportunistic segregationist Strom Thurmond. Did you also admire Jesse Helms? Was he racist enough for you? What a truly contemptible hypocrite you are! Disgusting!

Frankly, I don't care if I'm banned. In fact, I'd welcome it.

interesting. we're not really experiencing that here (or at least not to the degree we see in the US). gotta wonder why.

people sometimes say they can't tell Americans and Canadians apart. they should look at our political worlds/experiences. couldn't be much more different.
