That is how it is done - the original pool needs to be well breached for drainage. I've spec'd that in my distant past, but it was a while ago so I'm not up on the latest maneuvers.

He’s going to meet us at the new house this weekend so he can take a look at the pool and give us some ideas. It could stay there and just be redesigned. Would cost a lot less then paying for a whole new pool.

I stayed in a villa once where the jacuzzi was half submerged in a pool. That was cool!

This is all sounding good - the multi level decks, the jacuzzi. The pool boy.

On the spa water flowing into the pool - I tend to agree with Rockhead on that. We never did it while I was with a firm that designed a lot of pools and built spas. I don't even like it aesthetically as an idea no matter how it's piped (perhaps it can look like a waterfall to the pool but actually be recirculating from the spa structure back to the spa structure, sans actually entering the pool. I think my boss did it once before I worked there and it got in Sunset Magazine. I forget at this point how he worked it. I quickly looked some up in my notebooks - my main gripe is that I think it looks hotel-ish, and would be strange for a small pool.
But - that's me. Will be interested to see what your friend has to say.

Adds - I'd separate the idea for a fountain in the yard from the pool/spa system.
