@Region Philbis,
As a "should win" list I like it.

@Region Philbis,
Zack Greinke #23 SP»

2009 STATS
ERA W-L SO WHIP
2.16 16-8 242 1.07

Solid numbers that look depressing considering he fell pretty short of the 20 win mark. It's a shame he had to been wasted on a Royals team.

What is this WHIP stat?

@tsarstepan,

the voters didn't penalize him for being on a crappy team... thought they would.

WHIP = walks + hits per innings pitched

@Region Philbis,
The question now is when is he going up for free agency? And who will grab him? The Mets? The Yankees? Or the Red Sox? Or the Dodgers?

I think Greinke's story is great... coming up from severe depression.

(Batting 1.000 so far in my picks)

Zack is a Royal for 3 more years, btw.

"Greinke, who agreed to a $38 million, four-year contract last winter, received a $100,000 bonus for winning."

@Rockhead,
Now if they can only build up an entire team around him then his talents won't go to waste.

Those 3 were the obvious choice (votes for Vázquez, OMG?). But I missed, my average is down to .500; Pantalones is 2 for 2.

Joe Mauer became only the second catcher in 33 years to win the American League Most Valuable Player Award,
finishing first in a near-unanimous vote Monday.

The Minnesota Twins star received 27 of 28 first-place votes and 387 points in balloting by the
Baseball Writers' Association of America.

Yankees teammates Mark Teixeira (225 points) and Derek Jeter (193) followed, while Detroit's Miguel Cabrera
drew the other first-place vote and was fourth with 171 points, one point ahead of the Angels' Kendry Morales.

at least i got the last one right...
Quote:
Albert Pujols is the unanimous winner of the National League MVP award, becoming the first player to repeat
since Barry Bonds won four in a row from 2001-04.

Pujols received all 32 first-place votes and 448 points in balloting announced Tuesday by the Baseball Writers'
Association of America.

It is the third MVP award for the St. Louis Cardinals star, who also won in 2005. He becomes the first unanimous
MVP since Bonds in 2002.

Florida's Hanley Ramirez was second with 233 points, followed by Philadelphia's Ryan Howard (217) and Milwaukee's
Prince Fielder (203).

I think the whole Baseball Nation was unanimous about Pujols.
And our friend Pantalones coincided with the jurors in all 4 acknowledgements.

What I don't understand is the Ryan Howard myth.

@fbaezer,

shitty WS notwithstanding, howard's career numbers are impressive

he just turned 30, so he has a lot more dingers to go...

@Region Philbis,
Admitedly, Ryan Howard had a great 2006, is a top HR batter, and Home Runs drive attendance up.
Now, if we check closely at the stats, the edge he gives in a very powerful lineup is not worth a 3th place MVP setting, IMHO.
Plus, he's a strike-out machine and not a great glove.

In the key statistic "runs created per game played", he ranked 13th in the league, behind Pujols, Hanley, Fielder, Sandoval, Votto, Manny, Utley, Lee, Braun, A. González & Helton.

@fbaezer,
Or if not "per game" the Wins Above Replacement (WAR) could be a good way to measure value. This statistic also measures defense. Howard ranks 11th in WAR.

http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=nl&qual=y&type=6&season=2009&month=0

The MVPs and CYs this year went to the players with the highest WAR on their category, except for Ben Zobrist who edges Joe Mauer on some fielding adjustment for all the positions he played.

@Pantalones,
According to the 2009 WAR chart, provided by Pantalones:
Without Pujols, the Cards would not have made the playoffs.
Without Utley, the Phillies would not have made the playoffs.
Without Kemp, the Dodgers would not have been division champions.
Without Tulo, the Rockies would not have made the playoffs.
Without Jiménez, the Rockies would not have made the playoffs.
Without Mauer, Verlander, Span, Kubel, Blackburn & Nathan the Twins would have not made the playoffs.
End of list.

it's that time again, folks.
time to toss out those predictions, see if you can hit one outta the park...

AL MVP: . Josh Hamilton (nods to Miguel Cabrera)
AL CY: . David Price (by a nose over Sabathia)

NL MVP: . Carlos Gonzalez (over Votto & Pujols)
NL CY: . Roy Halladay (Wainwright & Jimenez also deserving)

My take (noticing that the Cy Young award is for the best pitcher in the league, regardless of his team standings, while the MVP award somehow takes into account the player's contribution into making a contender out of his team).

Cy Young
NL
1. Ray Halliday
2. Adam Wainwright
3. Tim Hudson

AL
1. Félix Hernández
2. David Price
3. CC Sabathia

MVP
NL
1. Joey Votto
2. Adrián González
3. Carlos González

AL
1. Josh Hamilton
2. Robinson Canó
3. Joe Mauer

I think both Hamilton and Halliday are a cinch.

The Gonzálezes fate depends a bit on how their teams finish. I think Votto has a strong lead, while Pujols, always great, and who'll anyway get a lot of votes, wasn't enough to make the Cards contend.
...And King Félix pitches for an awful team (thus his deceptive W-L record), but indubitably was the best arm in his league.

@fbaezer,

not so sure about hamilton any more -- he dinged his ribs and hasn't been playing.
mauer has had a great 2nd half, could steal some of his votes...

as good a season as felix has had, i just can't get past the mediocre won-lost record.
buccholz and lester have more of a shot than felix imo...

i'm an AL guy.
let the chips fall where they may in the NL...
