@patiodog,
I think it's a combo of Frisco shitness, and the fact that he was last years late phenom, and needs one more year to prove hes not a fluke to the national media.

(had him last year late in fbb as well, hella stuff)

@patiodog,
Aramis Ramirez?

(dark horse, I know...)

but without him, the Cubs may not have clinched the pennant.

@Rockhead,
I could buy that. Probably could make the same argument for Howard, though, and he's got all those RBIs.

A pitcher who I think should get some consideration (though not win) for MVP but not for Cy Young...

C.C. Sabathia

I've been watching the Brewers this year, and Sabathia was unbe-freakin-lievable. He's gotten a lot of national attention -- derservedly -- for his last three starts on 3 days' rest during the playoff chase, but he's been incredible since day 1 in Milwaukee. Changed the whole attitude of the team. Reminds me a lot of the Dodgers' acquisition of Kirk Gibson for all of the 1988 season. His numbers weren't MVP-like, but he got the award for the overall effect he had on the team. (Remembering a game where he scored from 2nd base on a wild pitch to win a game in extra innings.) C.C. hasn't been with Milwaukee all year, and so shouldn't get Cy Young consideration, but I don't know that there's a player in the NL who was more important to his team's success by the end of the season...
an unreal 2nd half, but i think his mediocre cleveland stats will do him in this year...

(didn't think he deserved it last year, so whaddoo i know?)

@patiodog,
heh heh...

that's another thing -- if pitchers are allowed to win MVP's, then position players oughtta be allowed to win cy youngs... 2 Cents

pujols has won the '08 Sporting News Player of the Year Award.
apparently they only give out one such award, as opposed to MLB, which has an mvp for each league...

@Region Philbis,
Which raises the question -- should you give the MVP to a player on a mediocre team?

I mean, like, he might be the most valuable player in the league, but he wasn't valuable enough, at least not this year.

I disagree about pitchers, for what it's worth. Wasn't really seriously advocating Sabathia this year, just thought it was a fun idea, but if a pitcher really is the most valuable to his team -- let's just suppose, tho it'll never happen, that some guy comes in and starts every 3rd game, runs up an ERA under 2, and wins 45 games -- he should get the nod.

Oh, and the catchers of great pitching staffs don't get enough credit -- at least, not until they're managers...

@patiodog,
there's alotta grey area in the criteria.
what makes a team mediocre? . a .500 or worse record?
i don't envy the writers who vote...

i guess i'd rather see a reliever like k-rod get an MVP because he has a say in the outcome of a lot more games than a starter... although he doesn't pitch as many innings...
