I've had one for over 17 years and it's the best. My doctor at the time would no longer prescribe me birth control pills because I had high blood pressure, so she recommended an IUD. I asked her if it was safe and she said it was completely safe and she had one herself. If it was good enough for her, it was good enough for me. There's no surgery and it is permenant, unless you decide to have it removed. My doctor now says that he can't understand why more women don't go with the IUD because it's the safest form of birth control available. No surgery or dangerous pills, so everyone wins :-D

My first wife had the IUD. She said it hurt and it was removed. I often wonder if her imagination caused the pain, since she had also had exploratory surgery for a pain - nothing found and the pain also went away.

There were some big problems with the IUD and they were not used as much for a while. I have no idea if they've improved.

Let me add that I remember iuds were considered abortifacients, a no no in the catholic church of my day. Well, they're probably still I no no for catholics, but it was a matter of vigorous theological dispute way back when.

Mine was a bit uncomfortable for several months, but I can't say it was painful. It's to bad she had pain with it. Maybe it wasn't put in properly.

Osso
Yes, but any kind of birth control has always been a no no in the catholic church, sigh!

That's true, Montana, but an iud was considered an abortant, not just control of hormone cycles. (This was back in the late 60's I'm talking about.)

And this link mentions both of our points re the iud's safety. They were deemed unsafe, and now they've been improved.

Sorry that these posts veer off topic (sort of, though not entirely.)

That's very interesting, Osso. I never knew that about them being deemed unsafe.

I thank that first amoeba in the primordial pond that decided to go rub its cilia against the hunky blue protozoa instead of the leggy pink paramecia...

The abortion subject is something that I will never have to deal with personally, I just get to adopt the babies you guys make. Kudos to women though, you guys go through hell, and sometimes we guys take that for granted.

Though I believe in abortion, I think it should be used as the last possible option. There are always those like me that will never be able to have kids of their own, but would like to feel the joys of parenting.

Then there are those like me who are quite capable of having children, yet fail to understand why on earth anyone would ever want to.

It is not that I'm unable to have children, I'm pretty sure all the equipment works just fine. But me having children would require that I use a woman that I have no feelings for just so she can give me a child. I think that's unacceptable.

I admit, children can be a pain, but parenting can be rather fullfiling, as long as you support your children and love them no matter what.

You could always adopt a child. There's nothing precluding you from caring for someone who is genetically related to you.

That would be why he said he gets to adopt, Ruf.

Yeah same situation here. I'm theoretically capable of producing offspring but not with my prefered partners.

i agree, everyone is always like if you split the women up from the men, thats sexism or injustice, but your also splitting the men up from the women so its equal people, we all have to look at the sides of every sexism issue from both sides and say are the men not with the women as well.......

Not offended, only confused. Eryemil and I are in a similiar situation and will not reproduce. He however wants children and I do not. Thus our opinions do somewhat differ.
