Montana dosen't care for porn, not ehbeth. To each his own.

Shyt!

Just as I was beginning to think I'd get completely through 2004 without making a single mistake...I managed to confuse ehBeth with Montana.

My apologies ehBeth. I had my head up my ass...and sometimes when I sit the wrong way, I starve my brain of needed oxygen and it screws up my thinking.

Montana...I love ya gal...but the comments I erroneously directed to ehBeth were meant for you.

I am sorry you feel the way you do about porn.

It is not nearly the devil you see it to be...and in many instances, it is beneficent.

Really.

And any thoughts that people...or humanity in general...is demeaned or made the lesser in any way by its existence....is, in my opinion, ill-conceived.

I like your posts...and I'd really like to prevail on you to give your position more thought.

(And I do enjoy both Montana and ehBeth's posts!)

I love ya back Frank. I don't judge anyone if they enjoy it and it doesn't harm anyone, but I'm personally a hopeless romantic who is turned off by porn.

I truly enjoy your posts as well, Frank ;-)

Someone here did compare romance novels to porn and I do have to say that this statement blows me away. I don't know what kind of romance novels you're talking about, but the ones I read don't even come close to comparing to porn.

Frank - I think you just figured out why ya fell down and went boom!

Oxygen deprivation will do that.

Montana, Harlequin, which controls most of the 'romance' fiction, has a wide range of offerings. We've discussed this here before, most famously when one of our troupe was thinking of writing a Harlequin. Once you get to the Harlequin Blaze, Harlequin Temptation, or Silhouette Desire lines, you are truly into porn. Pretty porn, but porn.

I don't know Frank...this post reminded me of when Mia Farrow was being urged to change to the dark side. All in fun...I'm an avid Apisa reader.

Yeah...I didn't break the monitor. But the words "pace maker" were mentioned again after it was read...although the doctor did indicate a willingness for me to think it over before a referral to a cardiologist.

Hey, if I'm wrong...simply fading to black and beginning eternity without fighting a long, ugly endgame wouldn't be the worse thing in the world. And it appears there will be more than enough warning to pull over if I am driving when it comes.

None of us get out of this alive.

In the meantime, considering the situation vis-a-vis my ass and my head...I will try to be careful with where and how I sit from this point on.

Just wanted to be sure you didn't think I looked like...or acted like...Ruth Gordon.

Of course, you might also have been thinking I look like John Cassavetes...but I guess that was hoping for too much.

But on a serious note...

...I have often been accused of "trying to urge folks over to the dark side."

My agressive agnosticism (not an oxymoron at all!!!) sometimes comes across that way. This is the first time anyone has ever noted it on the porn issue. I thank you for it...and I promise I will use the notion in an argument at some point.

I guess there are issues with it (porn)...and I can easily see Montana's point...but as with so many items of this kind, there are benefits to weigh against the liabilities. And my guess is that porn has helped to save more marriages that were salvagable...than it has ruined marriages that were.

Frank,
I would guess the opposite...but I would add that A2K is performing a valuable function to save those marriages that could be ruined. As you may have noticed, there's been a flood of letters fom bewildered new posters on the porn issue. That means that there's an audience out there for the type of rational argument that you help provide.

If only it were the same for the philosophy forum.

I think Frank did earlier, and I mirrored the same in my porn thread.

I don't mean romance novels are pornographic. What I meant, is women and men are turned on by different things. This is part of what I wrote on my thread:

"guys are turned on my big boobs, nice hair, whatever. Women are turned on by looks as well, but there are other factors that give them the gut "wow, that guy's hot" affect. This is why women read romance novels and watch romantic movies for stimulation, and guys look at Penthouse."

Men are turned on by visual stimuli(porn), and women are turned on by things that grab their emotions, such as romance novels, stories in Cosmo, romantic movies. I know they're different things, but kind of serve the same purpose.

Porn has saved marriages? I'm going to have fun with this-

<A couple is sitting with a marriage councilor>

"What's the problem folks?"

"My husband and I aren't getting along at all, we both have very busy schedules and the kid's are in trouble at school. What do you recommend?"

"Have you seen 'Debbie Does Dallas?' Laughing

Frank, I couldn't resist. I think porn might add a bit of flavor in the bedroom, but as far as it saving marriages, that seems like a bit of a stretch.

Porn can indeed save marriages, especially if you are married to a porn star.

I get what you are saying, Paula, but consider the dynamics for a bit.

Try this:

Marriage is on the rocks because, after a steady diet of several years, the guy is no longer turned on by his wife. He turns to porn...which, after using it to whack off for a while...becomes a kind of video Viagra...and he uses the boner to do his wife. Since the sex is more of a relief than an integral part of the relationship...the marriage goes on.

Now, try it without the porn:

Marriage is on the rocks because the guy, after a steady diet of several years, is no longer turned on by his wife. He turns to his secretary...and then a barmaid at the local watering hole...and then a woman he meets on the train...and then...but why go on. At some point, his wife finds out...and they divorce.

Does that really seem like a "stretch?"

Frank
I see and understand your point. The only thing is, would you want to be maried to someone your not attracted to? I was married for 13 years and yes sex can become predictable, uneventful for stretches.

But if a spouse is so turned off by the other to the point of cheating, that couple is living in a false relationship.
In your first scenario, it seems like the wife is getting ripped off. The foreplay is with the porn and not with her. I can see the porn as a 'jump start', but if my spouse just used me to "drop his load in" (your description sounds a bit like that) I would rather be divorced.

I never read any harlequin, but I will surely take your word for it. If harlequin can be compared to porn, then I wouldn't be interested in them ;-)
