Speaking of squirrels, which we weren't but if we were while I am trying to kill time by searching for something to talk about on an overcast Saturday in the mountains of Virginia while waiting for Sunday's games...
I have noticed a big net increase in the squirrel population this year. They seem to be breeding like rabbits. A local media outlet did a story on it, claiming that last fall there had been a bumper crop of acorns. That was followed by a mild winter. Gray squirrels breed twice a year.
I claim that there is a "big net increase" in squirrels. On my daily commute to work on county roads and through the leafy UVA part of town I have noticed a lot of squirrel roadkill.
One of our customers mentioned that she and her teenaged daughter had recently driven the 5 miles to the dog park. The kid counted 27 dead squirrels which I found remarkable. Not because there were 27 dead squirrels. Rather, that the child was more interested in counting dead squirrels then in texting.
