The Football (soccer) World Cup in South Africa starts in a couple of weeks.
It's time to play another A2K Fantasy Game.
The simple rules of the game:
1. Each participant chooses 5 footballers who will play in South Africa 2010, and orders them from 1 to 5.
2. Every goal scored from this players will mean points to the participant. 5 points for player number 1; 4 points for player number 2; 3 points for player number 3; 2 points for player number 4 and 1 point for player number 5.
3. The game will be held in 3 stages:
Stage 1: group rounds - first 48 games
Stage 2: second round and quarter finals - 12 games
Stage 3: semi-finals, game for 3rd place and final - 4 games
4. The list of strikers for Stage 1, and their order, can be changed for Stage 2
and, again, for Stage 3. If a new list is not provided before a stage kick-off, the original list will be taken as confirmed for that stage.
5. The winner is the participant who scores the most points.
6. There will be 4 winners. One for each stage and one for the total tournament.
7. Tiebreak system:
If two or more players end a stage or the tournament with the same number of points, the tie break will follow this criteria:
I. The participant whose strikers scored more goals, regardless of the order in the list.
II. The participant whose strikers scored more headers (goals with the head).
III. The participant whose strikers scored less goals from penalty kicks. (the eleven step PK).
8. No player can duplicate a previous poster team. There should be at least one difference (in the order or in the list itself).
Prizes:
Stage winners: Virtual gold medal
Tournament winner: Virtual FIFA Cup
Tournament runner-up: Virtual silver cup.
--- an example will be given in the next post ---
EXAMPLE WITH (OBVIOUSLY) FAKE PLAYERS:
1. Gentel (BRA)
2. Ellpus (ENG)
3. Hinteler (GER)
4. Nation (USA)
5. Lowan (AUS)
Any goal by Gentel is worth 5 points
Any goal by Ellpus is worth 4 points
Any goal by Hinteler is worth 3 points
Any goal by Nation is worth 2 points
Any goal by Lowan is worth 1 point
---
Your list should be with REAL footballers. If they do not participate in the World Cup, we'll tell you.
----
DEADLINES:
The deadline for participation for Stage 1 (key to win the tournament) is the moment of the South Africa - Mexico kick-off, June 11th, 15.00 GMT
The deadline for participation for Stage 2 is June 26th, 15:00 GMT.
The deadline for participation for Stage 3 is July 6th, 19:30 GMT.
@fbaezer,
I'm in.
I'll represent the totally ignorant in a steadfast manner, but I might learn by all this.
@ossobuco,
Good, osso. I counted on you.
Since I started the thread, I'll be the first to post my list:
1. Luis Fabiano (BRA)
2. Villa (SPA)
3. Rooney (ENG)
4, Klose (GER)
5. Barrera (MEX)
Sputter, sputter. We are supposed to pick players? There was a story on NPR this afternoon about the teams. I dutifully took notes. Portugal, Spain, Greece, Netherlands and perhaps Ivory Coast got mentioned.
Back to the drawing board. Or is it the dart board.
I was aware that Fbaezer was going to launch this. So I did do a little research.
My guys - if I understand the rules:
1) Lionel Messi (Argentina)
2) Fernando Torres (Spain)
3) Luis Fabriano (Brazil)
4) David Villa (Spain)
5) Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast)
@realjohnboy,
"A little research", he says.
Bright picks, RJB!
I'll get back to you. Consider this a subscription to the thread.
@Pantalones,
Oh, good grief, now I need to read up.
Robin Van Persie (Netherlands)
Hakan Sukur (Turkey)
Diego Forlan (Uruguay)
Samuel Eto'o (Cameroon)
Herculez Gomez (USA) yeah, yeah, I know . . .
@George,
4 of your picks are quite interesting, George, including young Herculez.
I wouldn't cound on Sukur scoring, though, given the fact that Turkey did not qualify. You can change that.
@George,
HA!
I just realized that the article I read is
years out of date.
I'll be back.
@fbaezer,
Please delete Sukur and add Jong Tae-Se (North Korea) in his place.
Thanks.
@fbaezer,

Or in other words,
what the hell am I thinking?
Reminds me of Spock raising an eyebrow and saying "Fascinating".
Can you tell I've just been through "Diversity Training" here at the Widget Factory?
Well, guys, I have a guess:
1) Wayne Rooney (UK)
2) Arjien Robben (NL)
3) Diego Forlan (UR)
4) Cristiano Ronaldo (PT)
5) David Villa (SP)
@Francis,
Tagging for future participation. I'm in Paris but understand Henry may be in Tunisia which rather spoils my hopes of nobbling him before the tournament begins.
Back in one week.
Nice picks, Francis (but Wayne Rooney plays for England, not the UK, eh!).
Good to see our 2006 leg winners (Pantalones, George, Lmur) are back.
@fbaezer,
<staring down the simple rules>
I plan to be bavk.
1.Villa (esp)
2.Tevez (arg)
3.Suarez (uru)
4.Rooney (eng)
5.Iaquinta (ita)
