@Foofie,
funny, i'm always conscious of the fact i'm in a foreign country, and i live less than 50 miles from the US border (actually at a lower latitude than a good many of the northern sates) and have been inundated from birth by US culture

luckily my parents though it more important that we see and experience our own country rather than holiday at Disney

Actually, I've been to one yesterday night, some couple of hundred children made one as one of the attraction at the Light Festival in Erfurt.

But what you said: I really don't see the irony.

I've known a few Cornishmen who feel like that, when they pop over the border into Devon.

@Foofie,
Quote:
Since most white folks are not enchanted with the idea of their children marrying someone from another race, with resulting mixed race grandchildren, most of us are "racist."

I would have to disagree with this statement.
Most people I know, including all of the "white folks", dont care.
If my child is happy, and if the spouse treats my child decent and makes them happy, I dont care what race the other person is.
For you to say that "most white folks" do care about that shows that you have a very narrow mind, and that you are more concerned about race instead of who people actually are.

You are the bigoted one.

@Walter Hinteler,
Foofie has problems with irony too, he claims not to be racist, whilst at the same time, having a snide dig at you for being German.

@djjd62,
I constantly tease my wife about her accent.
She was born and raised in Kentucky, and thats where we live now.
I always tell her that since I met her I am now bilingual, I speak both english and Kentucky.

I have noticed in my travels that there are regional accents in every country.
There are at least 5 different regional accents here in the US...southern, new england, creole, texan, and the west coast.
Regional accents might be fun to try and figure out, but they are essentially meaningless.

I may be wrong, but I believe it was Winston Churchill that said, when talking about the US and Britian, that we are two peoples separated by a common language.

Your parents were very smart.
There is so much to see and do right here in the US, that I often wonder why so many Americans feel the need to travel abroad.
(I know you arent an American, but the comparison is appropriate, btw)

I have traveled to all 50 states, and seen things that most Americans dont even know exist.
Its a shame how little Americans know about their own country.
I have been in Wyoming, where the deer and the elk are grazing so close to the road you can touch them.
How many Americans have been to Independence Rock, in Wyoming?
There are names carved into that rock that date back to the mid 1800's, when the first settlers were moving west.
Or south Pass, where the debris from those wagon trains still litters the ground, from settlers having to dump stuff to make their wagons lighter.

How many Americans have seen a bald eagle dancing on the breeze in the rockies, or tasted water from a spring in the desert that even in summer will take your breath away because its so cold.

I could go on for another 3 pages about the things this country has to see and do, but I think I have made my point.

Mailer offers an explanation.

Quote:
The American family travels to strange states and places in order to take photographs and bring them back, as if the photographs will serve in future years as data-points, crystals of memory to give emotional resonance to experience that was originally without any.

Obviously nobody will admit to such a cynical motivation so they claim to have an urge to see the world. As if anybody could "see the world" in a million lifetimes. And as if having such an urge is the mark of superiority.

Exactly, while natural beauty and historical sites are all wonderful in their own rights,
the real highlight of travelling is meeting new people, experiencing their culture,
partying with them and of course dancing with their women. Wink
There's a lot to be said for being the new kid in town.

Interesting ...
This man says he has the know-how to lead Scotland Yard out of "crisis" despite the government's funding cuts.
What exactly is the "crisis", then?
I thought it was insufficient police numbers during the rioting & looting, due to reduced government spending.
But he says he can change things without increased spending.
I wonder what he has in mind?
Apparently David Cameron is listening to his theories on how to fix gang violence & the "police crisis" despite his ineligibility for the top police job.:

US police chief 'seriously interested' in Scotland Yard position though home secretary has banned foreigners from applying

The former US police chief Bill Bratton has said he is a "progressive" who can lead British policing out of "crisis", reduce crime despite budget cuts and bring about "transformational" change in the aftermath of last week's UK riots.

In an interview with the Guardian, Bratton said he was "seriously" interested in the vacant post of commissioner of the Metropolitan police but that the home secretary, Theresa May, had been "adamant" in banning foreign nationals from applying.

Bratton – credited with turning around troubled police departments in New York and Los Angeles – is understood to have been David Cameron's choice to run Scotland Yard. Instead he will advise the prime minister on gangs and crime after the Home Office insisted candidates must be British.

According to Whitehall sources, Bratton has also told friends that he was so keen to take the job he would be prepared to take British citizenship if it made the difference. Cameron's courting of Bratton continued to provoke criticism by senior British officers on Sunday.

The series of rows between the Tories and senior police officers intensified yesterday. They are disputing where the blame lies for losing control of the streets to looters, who deserves the credit for quelling the riots and whether budget cuts will endanger public safety....<cont>
