Plastic rounds/ rubber bullets advocated, probably will be used. Maybe a curfew in some areas.
But both of these measures are fraught with difficulties.

The British police forces aren't known for the use of deadly force like their US counterparts. From what I understand, the British police, for the most part, don't even carry guns.

I can see how the killing of a suspect who was a minority, and by all accounts was something less than an upstanding citizen, by an otherwise unarmed police force could provoke outrage among the minority groups.

Of course, it's provided an impetus for other criminally minded individuals to use the event as a pretext for hooliganism.

I don't think that Duggan's killing would have prompted that kind of outrage had it occurred in the US. It would be thought of as something along the lines of business as usual.

If Britain intends to regularly use lethal force in its law enforcement endeavors, it would be prudent to accustom the populace of its intentions to do so. Arm all of the law enforcement officers and make it clear to all that lethal force is an option.

Or don't use lethal force at all.

I was a teenager in the summer of 1968 when the National Convention for the Democratic Party was held in Chicago. Most of the protest was about U.S. involvement in Vietnam and the fact that us teenagers were being drafted to go fight and die there. Chicago police responded forcefully and injured some innocent people. Not all of the protestors were innocent, though, many were destroying property.

@InfraBlue,
I think the officers that shot him were part of a special 'armed' force. I'm reading conflicting reports, though...some saying that Duggan opened fire on the officers that were trying to arrest him ... one officer was wounded. Another report says he didn't have a 'real' gun...or he had a gun that shot blanks.

IMO the media always (or usually) sensationalizes events, so I'm more inclined to believe what the A2Kers that are actually there are reporting.

@Irishk,
Quote:
The victim of a police shooting did not fire at officers before he was killed, according to a report by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

An IPPC ballistics report said there was "no evidence" that a handgun found at the scene had been used.
The death of the 29-year-old sparked the first night of rioting in London in Tottenham.
He died after receiving a gunshot to the chest.
His family issued a statement saying: "We feel completely gutted. Someone must be made accountable for this. We can't believe that they can do this. In this day and age this is completely unacceptable. We are very, very angry and we want answers now from the police."
The IPCC say the investigation into the incident is continuing with CCTV from the area being reviewed.

@Walter Hinteler,
Thanks. I read another report from a British paper that even reported on the 'wounded officer's' condition and eventual release from the hospital. How do they get these facts so wrong???

@Irishk,
The police involved in the killing was a special unit, namely the Central Operations Specialist Firearms Command (CO19).

It has been said/written since yesterday already that he might have been 'wounded' by "friendly fire".

I've been away oop North overnight, just got back.

Rioting goes hand in hand with a Tory Government. There are are bunch of criminal little shits who are taking advantage of the situation, but the Con Dem government has carried out a lot of policies that were not in either party's manifesto. There are savage cuts both to the police, and to those services that keep disillusioned young people off the streets. The Met has shown itself to be corrupt over Murdoch and Ian Tomlinson. A lot of people a justifyably very anry over what happened to Duggan, but this anger has been hijacked by a lot of bored, opportunistic feral rats. Tonight will be interesting.

@izzythepush,
The in-fights between the Conservative-Dem government and the MET were conducive that these marauding youths have ben enabled to destroy law and order.

@the prince,
It's kicking off all over the place now

There is no fear

No respect

I don't believe all these kids are bad thru and thru - the mob mentality kicks in! It is a minority who are inciting this violence - and the rest just pile on in.

Then there is just the sheer stupidity ('eh, it's the mail, but still)

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2023667/London-riots-Looter-posts-photo-booty-Facebook.html

The police can't do right for doing wrong. They are handcuffed by their bosses, they are on the front line and have to face this - this is how we charge our policing and why our coppers became coppers - however, listening to the Home Secretary say we "police by consent" - well, Joe Public consents to the police being able to perform their job - right now, they simply can't do it.

Communities are trying to come together to clean up, stiff upper lip and all that - the majority of the UK are disgusted by what's happening

I do believe some sort of "community vigilantism" is about to break as people try to protect their homes and businesses... it's not going to be a good night...

Would I protect me and mine? YUP!

@Walter Hinteler,
There was talk in the Newsagent of it spreading here. Tonight would be a good time, Saints are playing Torquay in the Carling Cup, there's a lot of police taken up with that. And thanks to twatting Royston Smith there's plenty of rubbish to burn.
