@aidan,
Quote:
Basically what she said is, 'We've given the kids the run of the schools and homes so why is anyone surprised when they take the run of the streets?'

Which gets turned by the hyperventalating Cameron into

Quote:
With the support of David Cameron, Conservative Wandsworth council was the first to attempt to evict tenants who had been caught up in the rioting. The prime minister also pledged to support "zero tolerance" policing where minor offences are prosecuted and said a series of tough measures would be unveiled in coming months to fight crime and reclaim the streets. "We haven't talked the language of zero tolerance enough but the message is getting through," he said

But hey, no one is talking about his coziness with Murdoch anymore are they....mission accomplished. Good public policy however, and one that represents the democratic process, not so much. Americans have grown weary of identity politics and zero tolerance policies, because they never seem to lead to anything good, but you Brits are going for them whole hog.

What is a 'British' accent? A sort of catch all Scottish/Welsh/English abortion that fools nobody. Nobody I know has a British accent, the fact you use such a term shows how ignorant you are, and why your opinion is worthless.

My opinion might be worthless; however, Americans can differentiate between a brogue, a burr, and what we call a British accent. It sounds to our ears as British. That is all that matters. We can tell a French accent. A German accent. An Italian accent.

Many people treat a British accent as though the speaker has some great intelligence.

@djjd62,
I love Brummie (Birmingham) and Scouse (Liverpool).
I also like a Welsh accent.
They're all sort of melodic- there's a definite rhythm and musicality to them.

Somerset/Wiltshire accents are fun too.

I don't like those very clipped and posh accents - I don't know that they're regional though - I think it has more to do with what sort of school one went to.

@Foofie,
You were the one who came onto a British thread, and started preaching your ill-informed, prejudiced, smug schadenfreude. You've added absolutely nothing to the debate, save to highlight what a repulsive individual you really are.

Not really. You're a moron, Foofie is a racist, and David is an insane bigot. It's not the same at all. For a supposed leftwinger you spend one hell of a lot of time sidling up to the far right posters.

In the U.S.A., private citizens are allowed to be discriminating. If I gave a red lollipop to everyone but a minority person, I would not be a racist. I would be discriminating, or perhaps ethnocentric. You need to give credence that, as a member of the EU today, many Europeans/British have a narrow vision of what is a racist. We Americans have freedom of speech.

Since most white folks are not enchanted with the idea of their children marrying someone from another race, with resulting mixed race grandchildren, most of us are "racist." However, that is not talked about, like in the fable The Kings New Suit of Clothes. So, stop making accusations that have no bearing on anything, since most people, I believe, by subtler definitions (as I explained) have racist feelings.

Now that "racist" has been redefined to mean "one who has not accepted the Care Bear philosophy of life" who cares??

Many Americans cannot distinguish between the nuances of different regions' accents in Britain. To many Americans, any accent in Britain sounds like Sherlock Holmes or Dr. Watson.

But, from this thread, I am coming to the conclusion that Britain might still feel that their smallish island nation still never has the sun set on its empire.

Repulsivity is my strong point. Also, punctuating so a reader can read comfortably.

Oh now Europe is preaching such love. I guess you missed all the torch light parades, so you do not see the irony.

In America, if it sounds racist it might just be "politically incorrect" (to sound racist), but it might just be reflecting our right to free speech and our opinion. Note how few mixed race folks are in many European countries. I guess being non-racist stops at the marriage alter?

There's nothing wrong with my punctuation. If you have problems reading, I'm not at all surprised. You have problems thinking.

i'm a Canadian who prefers British tv, so i guess i'm more attuned to the nuances

i would never say to an American, you talk like an American, i'd identify the dialect if i could (or as close as i could get anyway), my cousin married a Michigander, she now speaks like one, which is different from the Long Island, Philadelphia and South Florida folks i listen to on daily podcasts

Canadians, in my opinion, are really Americans that didn't get to completely break away from mother England. When Canadians come to the states, it takes about one nanosecond to assimilate.

You really are quite dim. You made the comment about punctution directly after quoting one of my posts. Therefore it is implied, if not expressed.
