RIP Professor Snape - Alan Rickman Passes at 69

Quote:
Alan Rickman, one of the best-loved and most warmly admired British actors of the past 30 years, has died in London aged 69. His death was confirmed on Thursday by his family who said that he died “surrounded by family and friends”. Rickman had been suffering from cancer.

A star whose arch features and languid diction were recognisable across the generations, Rickman found a fresh legion of fans with his role as Professor Snape in the Harry Potter films. But the actor had been a big-screen staple since first shooting to global acclaim in 1988, when he starred as Hans Gruber, Bruce Willis’s sardonic, dastardly adversary in Die Hard – a part he was offered two days after arriving in Los Angeles, aged 41.

@engineer,
Likely not the role he will be most remembered for, but one that always made me laugh.

Another English icon gone.

He was only 69 as well. A bad week indeed.

Rickman was probably the only good thing in this movie but the line was a classic.

Now my fantasy of being able to hire him to come to my house and read to me will never be realized.

Oh man I loved his voice.

@DrewDad,
I didn't know about him, having cut down on netflix these days, and not ever being a Harry Potter person, but that Guardian article makes me sorry I missed seeing him all these years. Rest in Peace, Alan Rickman. He was so very well regarded by so many.

He was so sexy to me. When we get to the poetry unit, I use a few youtube vids of him reciting. Lovely voice.

Like someone tweeted - very sad to lose two great male voices in the same week.

And someone else 'not a great week for 69 year olds'

PS Scwharzennegger turns 69 in July.

As I said before 69 is the new 27.

He was a fine actor, as most Brits are. They have learned their craft very well
and know how to entertain us on a much higher level as American actors can.
Alan Rickman was exceptional though...very sad !

Same here. I think I even saw Die Hard when it was on in theaters.

Although I did watch Blu-Rays of the Harry Potter movies.

I'm curious regarding the Potter movies. I heard some news commentators tonight refer to Snape as a bad guy character. I thought he was one of the very best of the good guys, just undercover as a bad guy to help defeat them?

Clueless news commentator or clueless me? (I never read the books/was advised against it.)

@oralloy,
You got it. It was revealed in the last book. I haven't seen any of the movies because my hearing causes me to miss everything except the moving pictures.

@oralloy,
He was the bad guy for seven and a half movies. Only at the end did he reveal the truth.
