@izzythepush,
The 12-13 thousand being jailed for posting came from the reporter at the press conference and the Prime Minster made no move to dispute the reporter's numbers only to say that they were pedophiles.

The radical right controls Great Briton you need to actually see what is happening to free speech in Great Briton.

@izzythepush,
The question was about Free Speech, and the Prime Minster made several references to Free Speech in his reply.

You best spend your time trying to correct the tape of the news conference.

Trump was angry with jimmy Kimbel monologue not because that he pointed out the shooter was raised by conservative family but by the fact that Kimbel pointed out that Trump plans to use Kirk a lot more dead than alive. That made Trump livid. He wants to use Kirk's legacy, but he does not want to be viewed as doing that.

@Zardoz,
I have better things to do than track down your alleged video.

We have a Labour government.

And your use of facts is no different from Trump's

You are completely ignorant about the world outside West Vigeenya.

The reporter in question was a right wing plant whomtalked about America being a proud Christian country and asking if the UK still was.

You are lying about 12 - 13,000 being jailed. She asked about arrests.

And the response was about those arrested for hate speech not imprisoned.

You lied.

This is the truth

Quote:
The statistics on arrests in the UK related to social media posts are real but are being shared without context. The laws under which people are arrested also apply to “harmful communication,” which includes incitement to terrorism and violence. The law also covers online threats and abuse, including unwanted communication via email and other means. Accordingly, these crimes are also included in the statistics. Additionally, police are obligated to launch an investigation upon receiving a report of a violation. However, the statistics also show that despite the high number of arrests, the number of people who are actually prosecuted or imprisoned is low. For example, in 2024, only 137 people were sentenced to immediate imprisonment under these provisions. Nonetheless, there is criticism in the UK that the law in question may constitute a restriction on freedom of expression.

You're not interested in the truth because you'd rather take the word of one of Putin's puppets instead of a UK national about a country you've never visited.

You can see why Cockney rhyming slang works so well.

Both full of ****.

That's good. But the USA is further down this radical right road than the UK is – for now. I can tell you that watching your politicians and royal family feting Trump was stomach-turning. It didn't give me much confidence in the UK remaining a free and open society. As our present political situation here demonstrates, the turn toward fascism can occur very rapidly.

I'm the first to admit that the 2nd amendment is an anachronism. But this was recognized for years and we never had anything like what we see today in terms of gun violence. The courts interpreted the amendment responsibly and allowed states and municipalities to adjust gun laws to fit their particular circumstances. Our National Guard was considered the "well-regulated militia" that was written in the 5th amendment. Restrictions were put on handguns and military weapons. The current situation is the result of a thirty year campaign to stack the courts with right-wing NRA-friendly jurists. Theoretically, a future court could return to the earlier interpretation but it's too late because there are already 400 million guns in the distributed among the population. The UK, thankfully, is in a different place with respect to firearms, having instituted restrictions much earlier.

No one is giving you a "lecture". The OP merely described what he saw. I think your criticism is quite unfair in this case.

@hightor,
Starmer has been a disappointment.

There are rumblings in the Labour Party.

Re Trump, this is not a meeting of equals. America is a vast empire, Britain isn't. Most of that stomach churning display was to protect British jobs and status.

After the conference a huge tech deal was announced.

I'm not happy about all the buttlicking either.

We have sane gun laws, the NHS, (my prescriptions are free because I'm over 60,) a much better welfare and social housing system, and no sacking for not venerating Charlie Kirk.

Labour is in panic mode, and as I'm still a member I get regular emails.

This is the latest.

Landmark Hillsborough Law introduced

The Prime Minister made a personal promise that he would bring in Hillsborough Law. This week, Labour delivered on that promise. The Hillsborough Law is a testament to the strength of the families who campaigned tirelessly for justice and will finally close the chapter on one of the darkest days in British history.

This legislation will hold public officials and authorities to account for their actions through a new legal duty of candour. This will prevent the sorts of cover-ups we have seen in Hillsborough, the Horizon scandal, the victims of infected blood, and those who died in the terrible Grenfell Tower fire. With Labour, we are putting politics back in the service of working people.

What does this mean?

A new professional and legal Duty of Candour - meaning public officials must act with honesty and integrity at all times - with criminal sanctions for egregious breaches;
The largest expansion of legal aid in a decade for bereaved families;
A new offence for misleading the public.
With this law, Labour is changing the balance of power in Britain and ensuring that the State can never hide from the people it is supposed to serve. This is the change that only Labour can deliver.

Landmark reforms to workers’ rights one step closer

The biggest upgrade to workers’ rights in a generation is one step closer, after Labour’s landmark Employment Rights Bill passed a key stage towards becoming law.

Fifteen million workers are set to benefit from Labour’s reforms, which include strengthening sick pay, day one rights to parental leave and ending the scourge of fire and rehire.

Labour overturned opposition wrecking amendments from the House of Lords, backed by the Tories, Lib Dems and Reform that would have watered down the Bill and limited those set to benefit from a ban on exploitative zero-hours contracts.

Key lines:

Labour’s landmark package of workers’ rights will put money in people’s pockets and deliver real life improvements for working people.
From early next year, we are:
Strengthening statutory sick pay
Introducing day one rights to parental and paternity leave
Introducing better protections for workers through a new Fair Work Agency
Other key measures in the Employment Rights Bill include banning exploitative zero-hours contracts, abolishing the scourge of fire and rehire, establishing Bereavement Leave and improving access to flexible working.
While the Tories, Lib Dems and Reform try to block these vital reforms, Labour’s Plan for Change is putting money in people’s pockets and delivering real life improvements for working people. Only Labour is proudly pro-business and pro-worker.

5 million NHS appointments

Labour promised two million extra NHS appointments in the first year – now we’ve hit five million. Promise made, promise more than delivered.

This means that millions of people can get the care they need more quickly.

Key talking points:

The latest NHS statistics show that over five million extra NHS appointments have been delivered since the General Election – smashing our target of two million.
Waiting lists are down by over 220,000 since we entered government.
2,000 GPs have also been recruited since last October, meaning more appointments and better care.
Labour is determined to turn around the decline in the NHS after 14 years of the Tories. While they and Reform voted against £29 billion of extra investment in our NHS, we’re working hard to deliver our promises through our Plan for Change.

Record-breaking £150 billion investment unveiled during US State Visit

The UK has secured a historic £150 billion of investment from US companies, newly announced this week as part of the US President’s State Visit, delivering real change for people across the country.

Labour is delivering growth and good jobs in all nations and regions of the UK. These deals will create more than 7,600 high-quality jobs, revitalise communities, and accelerate growth in sectors of the future.

This comes alongside the world-leading Tech Prosperity Deal which will speed up AI research into life-saving treatments, and a new major deal to turbocharge the build-out of new nuclear power in both countries.

This investment will deliver real opportunities for working people with 1,000 new jobs in Belfast and 6,000 more roles from Glasgow to Warrington, the Midlands and the North East.
In the North East, a new AI Growth Zone will create up to 5,000 more jobs and unlock billions in private investment.
And our commitment to build new nuclear power plants will boost up to 2,500 jobs in Teesside.
Key talking point:

This week has been about delivering for the British people. We have secured a record-breaking £150 billion in investment to the UK. As we deliver on our Plan for Change, these new deals will boost our economy, drive down household bills and deliver thousands of good jobs and growth across the country.

Fixing the foundations of our public services

The Labour Government is working at pace to fix the crumbling school and NHS estate. More than half of RAAC-affected schools and colleges are now either fully RAAC-free or on the path to removal and seven hospitals have also eradicated RAAC completely.

What does this mean?

Children can focus on learning instead of worrying about the roof above their heads, and patients will receive a safer, more dignified experience in our hospitals.

Key talking points:

30,000 more pupils are now learning in RAAC-free classrooms.
Seven more hospitals have now eradicated RAAC.
Thanks to record investment, Labour is fixing the foundations of our public services – moving beyond the sticking-plaster fixes of the past to create lasting change for pupils, teachers and communities.
Our public services have been starved of investment and left to crumble for more than a decade. Labour is cleaning up the mess we inherited and rebuilding our schools and NHS.

Latest Tory-Reform defection

The defection of sitting Conservative MP, Danny Kruger, to Reform, is yet further proof that Farage’s Reform is a party of recycled Tories with recycled Tory ideas.

Reform want to pose as something new and different, but they have recruited a bunch of failed and disgraced ex-Tory MPs – 17 so far.

Kruger is to become head of Reform’s Preparing for Government unit, and his past comments provide many hints as to what Reform’s next election manifesto could look like.

He believes in a number of conspiracy theories, including that there are plans to create a “world government” and that “excess deaths” are attributable to the Covid-19 vaccine. Kruger’s comments are similar to those made by disgraced doctor Aseem Malhotra at Reform’s Party conference earlier this month, who said the vaccine was a “significant factor in the cancer of members of the royal family”.

Echoing comments made by Farage, who has said he is “open to anything” when it comes to insurance-based healthcare, Kruger has extolled the benefits of healthcare privatisation. In 2002, he co-authored a policy report calling for an insurance model with “care on a contract or fee-for-service basis”.

I understand that. They wouldn't have put on that kind of a display for any other US president – because they wouldn't ever have needed to. Those guys were "presidential", which used to mean that they were well-informed, diplomatic, and, when necessary, conciliatory. Trump, however, is mercurial and imperious – a dangerous combination. That doesn't make the display any easier to view, though.

@hightor,
Don't get me wrong.

I don't have a problem with criticism of the UK.

Zardoz used right wing arguments about free speech in the UK to argue that we were ruled by the radical right.

That is ridiculous.

I have no problems with hate speech being unprotected, most people on the left are in agreement with me.

The proscription of Palestine Action is a real issue, and if Zardoz decides to criticise that he will get no push back from me.

Basically if you want to criticise the UK don't parrot Vance's critique.

Btw, the journalist in question worked for Forbes magazine.

Its chairman and editor in chief Steve has a weekly show Forbes on Fox which tells you everything you need tk know.

The question about 'proud Christian nation' was tailor made for a US audience, it's not something many people over here are bothered about.

Trump has packed the press corps with right-wing reporters precisely for this reason.

@hightor,
Given the undemocratic nature of Christian nationalism it was quite a sinister question.

The only groups over here who would be concerned are church goers who constantly lament falling church attendence.

A sign outside a lot of churches reads.

Ch__ch.

What's missing?

The other group ars white nationalists who spend Sunday's down the pub, and have never been to church but don't like other non white faiths getting a mention.

They'll happily call themselves Christian if it means thumping a few Muslims and Hindus.

That was the most disturbing part of the question as far as I'm concerned. We don't want Trump to think he needs to lead some sort of crusade against godless Albion.

The other part of the question was bullshit, and most people over here know it's bullshit, and I'd rather Americans think we have draconian free speech laws than need saving.

We don't want that sort of Christianity over here.

In fairness to Starmer, a lot of the people who had been arrested for their posts were paedophiles sending child porn or soliciting minors.

There is a long list of things that Starmer should have done but didn't right from his first day as Labour leader.

You are the first person since arguing with the gun nuts who tried win an argument from the sheer number of words. They were flying high until I pointed out how much more damage was done by AR-15 style weapons to flesh than ordinary guns. After that that they no longer wished to post.

I believe the reporter's question was meant for Trump's whose attorney general was on a mission to eliminate "hate speech" in America and the Prime Minster took the question instead. The reporter was looking for how many people the Trump administration had jailed over Kirk incident. The gift of free speech was given to us by the founding fathers who were the far left of their time. Free speech could not be even imagined in most countries at the time. The king could just order you killed for speaking badly about him. Something hopes to bring back.

We live in strange times when a president continually sues not only media companies, but comedy shows. Trump sued CBS over one commentator saying he raped a woman. That was not only established in court but by Trump saying that he could just grab them by the pus and they just let him. I had believed that rape was the sexual act but under the law in many states inserting a finger or a foreign object into the vagina is rape.

Yet CBS paid judgement. Why they had a multimillion deal before the SEC and Trump could stop it. It was easier to pay then lose the deal.

Trump sued 60 minutes over how they edited a story on Kamala Harris. Anybody that has done interviews with media companies knows the stories are going to be edited. I was with a state officer one day and the local television station was doing an interview. They wired us for sound before we left City Hall for the job site. I did not realize till later that they were listening to everything being said in our car. The complaint they had was unfounded. Often the interview lased 5 minutes but only 20 seconds made the air. Again 60 minutes paid the suit because they too had a pending deal.
