@snood,
LOL....why am I so convinced that everything I say is so memorable... We'd talked about it a few times...but, sorry for the assumption. And, yes. There is a lot of wiggle room on interpretation.

@BillW,
And the motto goes as your saluting an officer in the 101st. You say "Airbone!!!" and the response will be "Air Assault!!!" It is mostly a helicopter division. With its roots in air plaines. Smile So ya Cav and the 101st use similiar methods Very Happy

@peter jeffrey cobb,
We didn't have any special schools - the Air Cav was created in 1965 in the field. Did you see "We Were Soldiers Once (and Young)" with Mel Gibson? That is the beginning. I went to Basic and AIT at Fort Polk, Louisiana. All my air assault training happened in country.

No I havent. Ill be sure to look it up though Smile Have you seen band of brothers? That was the the beginings of the the 187th It was created during world war II. Rumors are that the saying "Follow Me" came from a liutenent from the unit when they landed in Normandy. They got a presidential citation for its service there. In Vietnamthey were the highest awarded unit. They ended up getting a presidential citation there too. Making it one of the only units to have 2. They realy have an Interesting History. Smile

Was the training facility at Ft Polk still called 'Tigerland' when you were there? That's what it was called during Vietnam era, then 'JRTC' (joint readiness training center), now Tigerland again. Polk and Leesville are pretty dismal now, so I can only imagine what it was like when you were here.

@snood,

Tigerland was the north part of the Fort, if memory serves me right - AIT training. I remember the night exercise where they give you some raw chicken, potatoes, onions and flour. You get to eat if you like raw cause no one got it cooked properly. Then they turn you loose for 3 miles worth of the escape and evasion course. At the end, you cross the road and you are done or you get caught and go to the POW camp. While crossing the road, someone will yell at you to stop and come back to them or they will shoot you. Some people actually obeyed them - dumb asses Wink

There is certainly reason to believe that the shooter is insane, and not only because of his actions in Tuscon yesterday.

I have previously condemned the extreme vitriol that is spewed at politicians from either side of the spectrum, and was reminded that "If they can't take the heat, they should get out of the kitchen," by someone who has already indicated on this thread that he believes the Right is in some way responsible for this crime.

The use of gun sights and targets in political ads or on political websites is in very poor taste. Political rhetoric that involves gun related metaphors, is idiotic and doesn't reflect well on those who use it.

However...expecting people to police their communication because there are insane people living in this country is foolish. Who knows what actually triggers lunatics to act? Didn't John Hinkley insanely implicate Jodi Foster in his assasination attempt against Ronald Reagan.

The analogy between employing inflammatory political rhetoric in a general dissemination and a bartender serving an obviously drunk patron is clearly specious.

In any case, until we have something that actually suggests this lunatic was motivated by something he heard or read, it's inappropriate to connect anyone's words to this crime.

The Arizona Republic newspaper reports this morning that Ms Giffords is not in an induced coma.
It also said that the shooter, Loughner, is refusing to talk to police officials, citing 5th amendment protection.

Really??? Violence either says it all; ot they would have to stuff an apple in his face to get that kind to shut up... They never do... He likely has a fifty notebook manifesto some place...Real sociopaths do not conceive of the world correctly nor do they fit the world as they conceive of it... It seems that they cannot accept the world as it is, but must change it to fit their skewed image of what it should be...

The idiocy of the repressionist position:

I 'm supposed to say that "because there have been murders,
therefore, I will throw my guns in the garbage,
saying to the predators of the world (man or beast):
' here I am, nakedly helpless; come and get me.' "

I refuse to do that.
Good citizens carry guns defensively.
That is what the Founders expected and intended.
This is AMERICA: the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.

No! Your guns are already garbage, but feel free to hang on tight... What you should throw out with the trash is the notion that violence is any kind of solution... It is a last alternative, a deal killer....We have too many who think that the last alternative should be first, and no matter what else you do, violence is always after the next thing you do; truly last... Do not put the last alternative before any other... Guns are for defense only, and the chances you will ever lay hands on it when you need it is slight, and perhaps the chances are some what better that a criminal will find it first... If you want to change society to fit your image of what it should be, then just do so... Form new relationships, and you have changed the world... Simple, though you may have to defend you actions at some point...

@spendius,

Wonder what would have happened to me if I would have pulled my gun
and blew this man away before he could get a shot off?

I understand that during the LI Rail Road murders of 1993,
there were some armed men on the train, in that car,
who did nothing.

I imagine that thay feared the possible retributions
of government, for their defensive gunfire; e.g.,
if a ricocheted or an overpenetrated round injured someone,
there was a possibility of civil or criminal litigation,
which woud cost them $1,000s in lawyers' fees
alone, even if thay won both civilly and criminally.

In other words:
it was a selfish decision, in each case.
Presumably, thay 'd have used their weapons
defensively if thay felt directly in danger,
but there were so many passengers in the train
that thay probably felt that there was not much
chance of getting hit themselves.

This is my sense of the situation; it is speculative.
I have not heard them be interviewed.
I dunno what I 'd have done in the circumstances;
I guess it woud have depended on how close I was
and whether I felt in danger, or not.

I know there has been a climate of fear in America,
especially over the last year or so and in connection
with the health reforms.
Some have been inciting anger, hatred & bigotry with
their rhetoric. It's been sad & troublesome to watch.
But I read this morning that a certain Mrs Palin had
said & I quote
Quote:
"Common-sense conservatives and lovers
of America, don't retreat...instead reload".

Please tell me she didn't say this, surely not. Any intelligent
person should know that this kind of statement could incite a
more volatile or unbalanced person to violence.
Even Mrs Palin must know this.?

Nonsense; this is merely in your mind.
