Heaven help me, I've signed up for the Corporate Challenge. It's my first race.

It's 3.5 miles, on Thursday, June 25th at 7 PM. I estimate my time (I will walk for about 99% of the race) will be between 1 hr and 1 1/2 hrs.

Awright!

I ran that race a long time ago when it was a five-miler (it went along the Fenway
for a while). It is a great one to start with because it is very flat. It started on
Charles St. between the Boston Common and the Public Gardens. There was an
almost immediate left turn onto Beacon that caused a crush of runners all
crowding in toward the corner.

Yep, it starts at the Common, looks to be a nice walk in the Beacon Hill/low alphabets area by Comm. Ave.

Where is everyone?

ehBeth, has swimming worked out yet?

I'm trucking along with usual workout. Last Friday I got overoptimistic on my distance run -- I kept crashing into the front bar on the treadmill even when I'd try to go slow -- so upped my speed to 5.5 mph. That lasted for a while, but then I had to go back down to 4 mph for about a quarter-mile near the end. Then back up again.

Yesterday did intervals, felt slow and bleh but it was OK. 6.5, 7, 7.5, 7 mph, respectively.

I'm up to three sets of 17 ball crunches on weight days.

A while ago (2 weeks?) a trainer dude accosted me and gymmom and said that he'd noticed we were doing cardio first (bike or elliptical) and then weights. He said we should do it the other way 'round. We decided to try it and neither of us like it, BUT I've noticed my muscles are really popping (hello biceps!) I think it's focusing on muscle-building rather than weight loss, and I don't really need muscle-building. We're probably going to go back to the usual way.

@sozobe,
My exercise is not very intense. I do a lot of walking. I use stairs instead of the elevator. I recently sprinted. After I took my daughter to the bus stop the other morning, she told me that she forgot her eyeglasses. I ran home (2 blocks) and then back to the bus stop (another 2 blocks) to hand my daughter her eyeglasses. The other parents were amused.

I was standing in front of the assisted pull-up machine at Planet
Fitness when I noticed something about my back. It didn't hurt.
Neither did the bursitis in my right shoulder nor the rotator cuff in
my left shoulder. My right wrist was a little stiff where I'd broken
it, but that was all, just stiff. Knees, hips, and ankles all seemed
free of pain. I'd found a new way of cushioning my right foot, and its
hammer toes, bunion, and fallen metatarsal arch were barely noticeable.
The muscles I'd been working on were tired of course, but on the whole
I was feeling pretty good. There must have been a time in my life
when I felt like this all the time, but it was too long ago for me to
remember.

I did a set of ten assisted chin-ups with the assist weight set at 25
plus an additional removeable weight that was not marked. I completed
all ten and felt pretty good. We moved the peg to set the assist
weight at 55 for Clive and kept the removable weight on as well. The
assisted pull-up machine has a small platform that you kneel on. It
is counter-weighted such that it reduces the amount of weight you are
pulling up. For reasons of his own, Clive likes to finish off a
repetition by bringing his knees up until the platform goes as high as
it can. He doesn't always get his shoulders up as high as he should
nor does he always lower himself all the way down. But that platform
always gets to the top floor. It drives me crazy. On the last rep,
he lowered himself until his arms were fully extended. He looked over
at me, smiled, and pulled himself all the way up.

@sozobe,
Haven't exercised much these past days. Had an ER trip with the kid as she had
a seizure in school (no prior history of such), nothing alarming was found but
more testing needs to be done.

I should get some more exercise in towards the weekend...

@CalamityJane,
Oh! Hope little Jane is all right and it was just a one-time thing.

Gymmed yesterday, will again today and tomorrow, to make up for missed days. Had a surprising amount of energy yesterday. Get the feeling today might not be so much.

@CalamityJane,
Whoa! That is alarming. Must be nervewracking to not know why, either. I know it sometimes just happens, though, and doesn't necessarily indicate anything worrisome. Best wishes to both of you...

(We just had an ER trip last night too -- sozlet bashed her nose yesterday and had some worrisome symptoms. She seems to be fine though.)

Thank you for the good wishes that's very nice of you all. We're optimistic! I'll let you know of the progress.

Oh sozlet's nose got smashed? Poor thing, it must have hurt like hell.
Is she bruised? I hope she feels better!

@CalamityJane,
She's actually less bruised today than I expected, can hardly tell anything happened. She bled a lot at the time -- today when I took her in to school she showed me the blood trail on the sidewalk, ack -- but since then she's been fine. All in all it was one of the least eventful trips to the ER we've taken. They confirmed that the swelling inside her nose was worrisome and worth taking her in to have it checked out, but she's fine.

Hope the little Jane's tests all come out well...

@sozobe,
Just got a call from the pediatric neurology - tests came up fine! What a relief!

On that note, I'll go out for long, long walk.....
Actually, I've been exercising these past days, it's a great stress relief and I
needed that.

How is sozlet doing? Talked to a Mom today whose daughter had problems with tonsillitis and otitis media. Her tonsils and adenoids were removed, and they haven't had any episodes since.

@CalamityJane,
Oh yay! Glad the tests are all normal. Hope it turns out to be a one-time thing.

Sozlet's doing well, thanks! The big appt. to discuss this stuff is coming right up. I'm still not quite sure where I am, will go into the appt. with an open mind. My friend got at the crux of it; she put it better but basically, I have to be convinced that it's the most beneficial thing for sozlet and not just the most convenient thing for her doctor.

Meanwhile, worked out earlier in the day than usual yesterday and today, I'm so not an early bird. My intervals today were pretty pitiful. 7 mph was the fastest I got and that was an Effort.

Thank you everyone for your concern. I feel like a huge stone is lifted from
my chest. You never know with kids....

Had a great workout yesterday too!

It was 85 degrees and we were jogging uphill when Two-Mile Mike
laughed, "Looks like I lost my bet."

"Whaddya mean?" puffed John O'B.

"We had a poll," said Mike. "I bet you wouldn't last past a quarter of a mile."

The day before, John had approached me and asked about jogging with us.
He had recently joined a Weight Watchers group at work and wanted to
get more exercise as well. I had thought it would be just John and I
jogging because Mike had decided it was too hot to jog outside. When he
heard John would be running, he changed his mind.

"I can't miss this. Besides, you'll need help carrying him back."

We reached the top of the hill. John had lasted a mile and was gamely
continuing. He recovered a bit on the downhill stretch and looked like he
would go for two. We turned onto 129 and John finally said "That's it for
me. I'm going to walk. See ya back there."

Two-Mile Mike and I continued and finished the two miles. Slowly.

"Poll?" I asked. "We didn't have a poll."

Mike just chuckled.
