Pilates are gruesome, hang in there Swimpy.

Sozobe, that's quite fast running at 6.5 mph - at least for my pace. Don't your
knee hurt when you run faster?

Gymmed this morning: 20 min elliptical, 20 min treadmill, and since it's a
gorgeous day (71 F), I'll go for an extended walk on our hillsides later on.

The problem with morning workouts is that I get so hungry afterwards *sigh*

Had to laugh at George's metaphor of a volcano erruption. I would have
pictured an entirely different scenario. Laughing

@CalamityJane,
Go Swimpy...!

CJane, yeah, it was hard for me to maintain that pace for half a mile. A quarter mile isn't that bad -- I go up to 7.5 MPH for quarter-mile intervals. I'm trying to push myself though.

My knees are actually fine, knock on wood! I've been pretty careful with them and have been gradually building up to this for, wow, two years? My knees were bad and twingey at the beginning but now I don't have any problems (on the treadmill), the only issue is whether I can breathe or not. That's actually a good reminder of how far I've come so far, thanks. Sometimes it feels like this process is sooo slooowww...

I want to be in San Diego, running barefoot along the beach.

Instead I'm in Chelmsford, jogging through a winter witch's brew of snow,
slush, and ice.

'Taint fair. 'Taint fair at all.

. . . wonder if the Reuben E. Lee is still there . . .

@George,
It is George, and it's being renovated to reopen in 2010. The boat was no longer
safe for public services i.e. restaurants and it sat there for a few years awaiting
its fate, but now someone bought the old float and is renovating it. It's waiting
for your next visit, George!!

Give me a holler then, if you'd like to.

Only walked up to the 6th floor. Everyone is sick in the office, and I feel
kind of achy too, will take a rest today.

This will be my report for the month of January:
phfffffTTT!

I did get in 6.3 miles yesterday by dragging myself around the park. Freezing, windy and flurries. Only seagulls in the air.
There were two, count'em, two other runners on the loop with me. I'm sure they were both certifiable as am I.

Okay, so I've got about 30 miles of running in (that would be a 360 yearly pace -- gah) I did get to the gym about six or seven times and that was good and the vacation pounds are gone.

@Swimpy,
oh gawd, Pilates

a couple of years ago, when I was first starting bellydance classes, I ended up in an intermediate class as a result of some scheduling weirdness

the beauteous Hannan used 20 minutes of Pilates as the warm-up for her intermediate classes. I nearly cried. The Pilates warm-up was harder than anything I'd been doing in the classes a level down. <shudder>

It's easier now, but it's still hard work. I always marvel that such simple movements can make me work so hard and ohmigawd ooof

@ehBeth,
Gymmed yesterday, for 1 hr 15 mins: 30 mins treadmill (inc. about 1 1/2 mins actual running/jogging), 17 mins bike and 13 mins elliptical. Remaining 15 mins were spent doing free weights and weight machines and moving from spot to spot.

And to think I started w/a 15 minute session way back when. That was in December to try out the place.

So, for January (not counting usual lifting, resistance bands, walking, cleaning and snow shoveling, this is just the gym):
1/7 30 mins
1/9 30 mins
1/12 30 mins
1/14 45 mins
1/16 60 mins
1/23 60 mins
1/26 65 mins
1/30 75 mins
Total: 395 mins AKA 6 hrs 35 mins

Running 60 min in one stretch, maposche? Shocked
Utopia to me! I ran 7 min today and mentally I could have continued but
my knees started hurting - gotta listen to my body *sigh* Besides the 7 min
running, I did 30 min interval on the treadmill, 10 min weights and only
5 min on the elliptical - I was beat, and ready for a nap now zzzZZZ

Isn't it great jespah - seeing your own progress increase from week to week,
or even day to day, it's such a motivation to continue!

Well my ability to do that was hard earned over the last 12 months. Not sure if you remember but around Feb/Mar last year I decided to run a marathon (which I did on 10/12). In Feb I could barely run for 15 minutes and that was at a 12:00min pace.

All it takes is consistency and hard work. Keep it up!

Yes, I remember you wanting to run the marathon. Good, you're giving me
hope that I'll gradually progress into running longer stretches of time.

Tell me, after running a marathon, is the motivation still there to do it again?

I ran the Ocean State Marathon (Newport RI) in 1983.
I haven't run one since. Once was enough, thank you very much.
Check that one off the "some day I'm gonna" list and move on.

But I'm still a runner. I've run half-marathons, as well as 10 and 15 ks.

@George,
15 K ain't nothin'.

I'm going to try to exercise at home today I think. Had an abbreviated week and am starting to get that draggy, haven't-exercised-enough feeling. (Snowday Wednesday, which is usually my off day anyway, but then sozlet went and got sick Thursday and Friday. Better now, knock on wood, so I should be able to get to the gym tomorrow.) (I did do another big sledding trip on Wednesday, that was something. At one point I impersonated a sled dog and pulled sozlet [on her sled] across a field covered with ~ a foot of snow, at full speed. Good workout.)

Yesterday Clive and I made our last entries on the "January 2009" chart.

I just made up our "February 2009" chart. This one is quite different and
follows the plan maporsche helped us draw up. Low rep and high weight.
Tomorrow will be our first day on it.

@CalamityJane,
Definitely -- I love seeing the #s go up.

I know eventually I'll hit a limit in terms of time, as it'll mean I get out right in time for rush hour and that won't be fun. Then the progressions will be for things like going faster or handling more weight.

You're doing really well, too. Smile

Thanks!
I actually run for 10 minutes straight today - unbelievable (for me)!!! Unfortunately, then came my neighbor, placed himself on the treadmill next to me and started talking. I can't run and talk (yet), so I walked the reminder of 30 min which was okay too.

Got to the gym again and did the Arms, shoulders, chest, pull-up/press-downs and a long session on the belly swing thing because the Crunch machine was out of order. Again (It better not be tonight or someone at the front desk is going to receive a very harsh note on their permanent record.) Then I ran two miles (very fast) so cold....

14F this morning.
