Storm surge predictions just posted

http://icons-pe.wunderground.com/data/images/at200809_surge.gif

Text from Dr Jeff Masters that goes along with this figure.

Quote:
ke is almost as large as Katrina was, and this large wind field is already beginning to pile up a formidable storm surge. Tides are running 2-4 feet above normal along the Gulf Coast from Louisiana to the west coast of Florida. Tides have risen one foot above normal in Galveston already, too. The water level will continue to rise as Ike approaches Texas, and NOAA's experimental storm surge forecast (Figure 1) is calling for a 10% chance that the storm tide from Ike will reach 10-12 feet at Galveston, and 18-21 feet on the south and east sides of Houston.

@Rockhead,
Yes, I'm far from the evacuation area. (Just inside the 610 loop in the SW corner.)

I believe at this time, only the yellow area of the map is under mandatory evacuation. The green is still voluntary, last I heard.

So far, I am out of the most expected path(s), for which I am grateful. Mine is a mobile home, surrounded by tall pine trees. Need I say more?

My comment about the hotel thing was about edgar. I certainly hope that you have scoped out your own situation carefully. Our thoughts are with yall in the days ahead. Yall take care.

@mac11,
Voluntary means stay home, and be prepared. (was a scout once...)

@Rockhead,
Not necessarily. They can't call for a mandatory evacuation without infrastructure to handle the outflow. Mandatory evacs are tiered to give people further in the time to get out. Doesn't mean the next level wont go mandatory soon. Best to have a plan (and plenty of gas) this is one mother of a storm.

@JPB,
As was noted earlier, some evacuations got underway yesterday. Mostly the infirm.

@edgarblythe,
Partial Mandatory Evac Orders -

Quote:
Partial Mandatory Evacuations Begin on Thursday

The newest weather forecast has shifted Hurricane Ike's landfall to the east side of Matagorda Bay, bringing the storm a little closer to Galveston County. The decision has been made following the latest forecast information to call for a mandatory evacation beginning at 7:00 am for the following areas: West Galveston Island, Jamaica Beach, Bolivar Peninsula, Omega Bay, San Leon, Bacliff and Freddiesville. Voluntary evacuations should be considered for low-lying areas in Dickinson, Kemah and Clear Lake Shores and La Marque. Citizens should also consider evacuating if they live in areas subject to flooding or in mobile homes. If you should decide to evacuate, please remember to pack your disaster kit and important papers. Hurricane Ike continues to be a difficult storm to track because of the number of shifts in the forecast models. Given the current track, we are preparing for the possibility of tropical storm force winds beginning sometime Friday morning and possible hurricane force winds affecting the county Friday evening around dusk. http://www.gcoem.org/

@JPB,
As it stands at 5:45 Thursday morning, my zipcode is expected to get winds of 80 mph. Subject to change (which it does with every forecast).

@edgarblythe,
I will be online Friday. After that, I don't know when you will hear from me again. I will try to remember to have dys's phone # with me, to get a message relayed, if necessary.

@Rockhead,
I got the numbers, and thanks. I believe we will be okay at the apartments. By staying there, I can be available should the residents have problems I can help with.

@JPB,
On that map, we are by hwy 149, in the northwest. Not all that far from where the number is circled. Still expecting 80 to 90 MPH wind here. Heck, the wind can get that hard in Vegas without a hurricane.
The forecaster on TV just said that the storm is pulling in some dry air just now, causing the barometric pressure to rise a bit. If it does enough of that, it may not get to cat 4.

@Izzie,
Hi Iz, I'm here. I'll probably check in tomorrow too, but don't be alarmed if you don't hear from me for a while after that, what with possible power outages, etc. Thanks for worrying!
