@nimh,
we know how to do this, we are not willing to pay for it. The ease at which the feds pay for rebuilding destroyed homes without demanding that the replacements be built for hurricanes has a lot to do with it. In my opinion if you want to live on a beachfront property that gets hurricanes you should be willing to pay the double price it cost to do it right. Maybe if the feds made a a new law that they will only pay disaster relief once?

My power came back on last night about 8 pm, but the a/c and hot water still weren't working as of this morning. Hopefully, they'll be cold and hot respectively when I get home tonight.

At least I had fans last night...and electricity to read by.

According to the local paper, a third of the city still doesn't have power.

@mac11,
Hooray!

Sure hope the a/c and hot water are settled when you get home.

How long did you make do without power?

(A third, wow.)

One of the minor but freaky things about this storm here is how clean-up crews are so overtaxed that non-urgent stuff is just sitting there. In a park near our house, two huge mature oaks were blown down. They're really dramatic, laying there on their sides. They're not near power lines or anything so they're just sitting there, though, for more than a week now. Slowly turning brown.

@sozobe,
Yesterday was Day 10.

The weather is supposed to cool off this week, which will be a relief to those without power, I'm sure. (Highs in the 80s, lows in the 60s.)

@Rockhead,
Here I'm is.
Well, we came home from the apartments, about 7:15 PM, where we have been going to get cool and clean up. Imagine our outrage to find the electric had been restored in our absense. I just got online at home, for the first time, since the day of the storm. The mechanic I use got his power yesterday, but his secretary said her lines cannot be spliced by the electric co, so she will have to wait until they restring the entire lines.
It has been a dismal experience for us. Much boredom, after dark, since all we had were weak candles and a flashlight for illumination. I read a book I had previously started and just never got to work on.
The job has been a nightmare for the entire staff - me less than the rest, since I am part time. My neighbor asked the man who cut the tree off of her house which trees posed a real danger to her in the future. He selected the biggest one on my property and offered to cut it down for $1500. I pointed out that there are twelve trees in my view, just standing in the front yard, close enough and large enough to squash her home, nine of which she owns. She is adamant. I says, I don't got the bread. She remonstrates, It's your responsibility. I am poor, I counter. And on Social Security. She has the tenacity of a bulldog. It will continue . . .
Got to stop now. 9:00 PM and I have yet to sup on my can of beef stew.

@edgarblythe,
I wouldn't cut anything without talking to my own professional licensed arborist, edgarb.
Of course, they're busy now.

@edgarblythe,
It is indeed delightful to have you back again, Edgar. This has been, we are sure, a very stressful time for yall. Your humor seems to be intact. That is good.
Welcome home.

@JPB,
Weary is the best way to describe us. Hopefully a good night's restful slumber will make us refeshed.

@Region Philbis,
Thanks for posting the link to the pics, RP. With the power out, I haven't actually seen much coverage.

@mac11,
Edgar, Mac, Soz.....

Glad that there is some kind of hint of normality coming back into your lives. I simply cannot imagine what you all have been thru. My niece returned to Texas yesterday and there is so much to do. She has lived a VERY blessed life and this has shown her a very different side to life - she is even going to do volunteer work.... these events do change peoples lives unbelievably.

So pleased you are safe. Love to you all.

Edgar..... your neighbour sounds like she is chewing on a bumblebee - if I were you man..... let her chew - you have more important things to be concerned with right now - like, you and yours ..... she can chew- but right now, you just take care of you and the Mrs and the dawg! Hugs. x

@Izzie,
I have been her neighbor for about 15 years. She will never drop it, but I don't have to give in.

@edgarblythe,
I saw the news of people returning to Galveston. Here it is, my problems are nearly over, but theirs are really just getting started. I don't have answers, or questions, even. It's life, and people will do what they will, regardless.
