On that note, prostitution should finally be legalized in the US. It is
legal in almost every country around the world, except the United States.

Dr. Jocelyn Elders - surgeon general until Clinton fired her for her support
in masturbation - was all for prostitution. She called for prostitution to be decriminalized. Dr. Elders has also said: "We say that [hookers] are selling their bodies, but how is that different from athletes? They're selling their bodies. Models? They're selling their bodies. Actors? They're selling their bodies."

It's not legal here, either.

Listen girls and listen good.

Have you any idea of how low the price would go if it was legalized and accepted as a perfectly normal behavioral pattern ?

For athletes to sell their bodies requires a considerable effort. Same with actors.

Models I'm not so sure about. I imagine it's not easy.

But prostitution is dead easy.

I can't believe this. Two women in favour of prostitution. How stupid does stupid get?

How would you know? Have you ever worked in the sex trade? Have you ever used the services of a sex worker?

Prostitution should be legalized and regulated. Guys will still pay big bucks for the pros. There is a lot more too it than just spreading your legs. Your wife can do that.

Sometimes spendi says some pretty ignorant things. Or he's maybe just ignorant of some things. Whatever.

Prostitution isn't legal?

I guess I had better be more careful from now on.

Well, prostitution itself is not illegal in Canada.

Although prostitution has never been illegal in Canada, many of the peripheral activities intimately related with it are so penalized.

Yes, I am for prostitution. It's one of the oldest profession, and it does
serve its purpose to the specific male population who otherwise would
not have the opportunity to engage in sexual activities for whatever
reason. I also believe it does keep the number of rapes down considerably.

The United States ranks 9th in the world statistics for rape

There have been studies on this in countries where prostitution is legal. Prostitutes generally make more per hour than women of equivalent background and education working in more traditional jobs.

Could seriously alter the the unemployment figures, too.

Women would no longer have an "excuse" for being on the government teet. They would have all of the training and equipment required to pursue a career, especially those with half a dozen kids living in government housing.

(just jumping ahead to the thought processes of some were it to become legal.)

Prostitutes who are good at it have always enjoyed high earnings going back to Ancient Greece and Mesopotamia. But even high priced call girls pay a high emotional price. I think that's why the majority of sex workers are Lesbians as it is easier to deal with emotionally when you don't like men.

Saw a report last night that noted 70% of prostitutes have seriously considered suicide. I find it amazing that, legal or not, some consider prostitution easy or just another job option.

Prostituitoo in Mesopotamia

Quote:
Prostitution in ancient Mesopotamia was not frowned upon as it is now days in the US and other cultures. It was a way for a woman, who in Sumer and Old Babylon had some rights, to make a living. Hammurabi, in his famous codes even had laws concerning these women's rights:

178. If a "devoted woman" or a prostitute to whom her father has given a dowry and a deed therefore, but if in this deed it is not stated that she may bequeath it as she pleases, and has not explicitly stated that she has the right of disposal; if then her father die, then her brothers shall hold her field and garden, and give her corn, oil, and milk according to her portion, and satisfy her. If her brothers do not give her corn, oil, and milk according to her share, then her field and garden shall support her. She shall have the usufruct of field and garden and all that her father gave her so long as she lives, but she can not sell or assign it to others. Her position of inheritance belongs to her brothers.

179. If a "sister of a god," or a prostitute, receive a gift from her father, and a deed in which it has been explicitly stated that she may dispose of it as she pleases, and give her complete disposition thereof: if then her father die, then she may leave her property to whomsoever she pleases. Her brothers can raise no claim thereto.

180. If a father give a present to his daughter--either marriageable or a prostitute (unmarriageable)--and then die, then she is to receive a portion as a child from the paternal estate, and enjoy its usufruct so long as she lives. Her estate belongs to her brothers.

181. If a father devote a temple-maid or temple-virgin to God and give her no present: if then the father die, she shall receive the third of a child's portion from the inheritance of her father's house, and enjoy its usufruct so long as she lives. Her estate belongs to her brothers.

182. If a father devote his daughter as a wife of Mardi of Babylon (as in 181), and give her no present, nor a deed; if then her father die, then shall she receive one-third of her portion as a child of her father's house from her brothers, but Marduk may leave her estate to whomsoever she wishes.

Oddly I agree with Roxanne...I think prostitution mostly sucks and is mostly a horrible job option.

But that makes it more important for there to be at least decriminalization, and therefore the chance for proper industrial agreements with occ. health and safety guidelines and redress for bad treatment.

Not that this will affect people prostituting themselves in dangerous situations for drugs etc., but it is a start.

We have an informal sex-workers' union here (though prostitution is still illegal in my state) and they have achieved a lot in terms of improved working conditions and have quite a high profile at times.

They also, early in the AIDS epidemic, had an enormous effect on promoting safe sex practices amongst prostitutes, with dramatic good effect.

That is an incorrect statement. Lesbian populations are way too small to fill the numbers of believed sex works. The vast majority of prostitutes are abused heterosexual women who have come from tragic home situations and are now technically enslaved by a man who continues to abuse them (physically and with drugs) for financial gain.

I agree with this statement. I think men do not understand how vulnerable sex makes women feel. The most dangerous thing for a human woman is human man. By inviting strange men into your life you are inviting abuse and even death. Only the most desperate woman would put herself into such a situation. A prostitute never knows if her next John will have the fantasy of strangling her to death.

And, in my rather extensive experience, it is frequently work drifted into by people (including male people) who have experienced significant trauma, especially sexual trauma.

Not that I am saying this is true of all, by any means, but I get really infuriated by people who go to the "it's just another job option", as many people who are actively trying to promote legalization and regulation try to say.

I agree strongly with their aims, but not their painting of reality for prostitutes.

Maybe a lot of these women simply do this because they're whores who like money and like to f**k.
