That's marriage goosed then as anything other than a "deal".

"I declare you man and wife. You may now shake hands with the bride".

Good grief. What Spitzer did was disgusting, but I don't think that a lot of people got that upset when Bill Clinton was gettting blowjobs in the Oval Office.

Personally, if Mrs. Spitzer was smart, she would divorce her husband, and as a parting gift, give him a present of a year's worth of therapy on a shrink's couch. That guy has hormones in the place where his brains should be!

Getting into why women stay with husbands even after they cheat is complicated and often times judged unfairly by outsiders who do not know the personal inside relationship and other factors which come into play regardless if that relationship is a public one or just one about any marriage.

I haven't really kept up with the story but I think there was more than just cheating involved with this one. Apparently the fact that he ran on an ethical platform makes him hypercritical and the fact that it was not just an affair but a high priced prostitute flown all the way from New York to Washington makes it more of a story. (a lot of trouble in my opinion) Apparently why this was prosecuted (usually they don't go after the 'john's' just the prostitutes) was because it it illegal to transport someone accross state lines for prostitution because of law passed in 1910. He broke the law which is why it was right he resigned.

Spitzer Is Linked to Prostitution Ring

I never really knew why prostitution was against the law. If women want to sell themselves (or men) and people are stupid enough to pay for something they can free; why can't they?

Huh?

That's a major memory alteration job, Phoenix.

Clinton was hounded for years re that blowjob, faced impeachment, and it still obsesses the minds of goodness knows how many on the right.

That statement "but I don't think that a lot of people got that upset when Bill Clinton was gettting blowjobs in the Oval Office" really is quite ridiculous.

The amount of drama over Clinton's sex life still evident among the wing nuts here, for example, is quite staggering.

I haven't followed this one a lot, but I don't care about this fella's sex life, either, unless it was illegal, or involved corruption of whatever his office is, or was.

I agree. Not only should prostitution be legal, the gov't should be in charge of brothels and taxing the heck out of it.

I think this event has already started such a discussion. All that money going under the tax radar makes the general public cranky. Consenting adults should be allowed to do what they want, but I don't want the government to start running brothels - congress would immediately declare all politicians are entitled to freebies. The government could issue licenses like they do for other professions. It would eliminate pimps and a lot of general abuse that goes unreported because prostitutes are afraid to come forward for fear of being arrested.

You mean it makes the legislators who could be spending that money on bridges to nowhere and left handed toilet seats for the military are cranky about the non taxed money.

i don't think John (or Jane) Q Public really thinks much about it.

Isn't the illegality of prostitution based on religious grounds? If that's the case, what's the likelihood of it ever becoming legalized? There is such a strong religious contingent in the US, that it's very doubtful. There would be a major uproar, would there not?

I think it's short-sighted to not legalize it. It's going to happen anyway, so why not make sure the women (and men) are clean (medically), stay in clean, safe houses, and pay taxes like any other profession?

The only reason I can think of is the religious one. That and everybody's busy minding everybody else's business.

Yes, the laws go back to the days of The Scarlet Letter. The US has (had) many laws that would make a Pilgrim proud. I'm old enough to remember the Blue Laws - having to be closed on Sunday, we got over that one and now Sunday is a big shopping day. Many states still have various sex laws on the books that look to control what you with another consenting adult, most of these laws are just ignored. I think Americans will come around on the prostitution issue eventually, it's just not going to happen when you have a bunch of Christian hypocrites in Washington that believe God loves war, but hates sex.

At the risk of diminishing everything said about Silda's impressive track record career-wise and as a mother, I would like to note that she is a total, total babe. Am I a sexist asshole? Probably. But that's not what we're talking about here. We are talking about how she is one sexy middle-aged lady.

Nothing wrong with saying a woman is sexy in addition to being intelligent.

I think Silda and the other woman look alike:

You just can't resist those wholesome, squeaky clean women. I bet she would be willing to put on a gingham dress if you ask her real nice.

Leaving aside considerations of legality, which are constructions of a particular cultural setting and which vary from place to place and from time to time and, as such, mere affectations or expediencies, what is a man if he cannot engage in the activities which the villain of our piece has admitted participating in?

What were those activities? Were they available to him within his domestic situation?

Saying that they were free at home, and therefore he was a fool, merely serves to highlight the ignorance of those saying such things and implies that they reduce all possibilities to those which they have experienced themselves.

Why would the "scarlet woman" be able to dictate such terms if that was all she offered?

On another thread on Politics we have been informed that there are connurbations where state lines run through the centre of town and that reduces arguments about "white slave traffiking", when voluntary, to vacuity.

Are some posters on this matter using the case to parade their own respectibility by invidious comparison?

It won't wash with me girls. The ball-and-chain is a no-no as far as I'm concerned.

Oh--I think you will find that many do. Ibsen for a start. Shaw. Joyce. Many.

Suggesting I'm the only one is merely a self-serving remark.

With 13 soldiers killed this last few days one might think you had something better to talk about than a carefully selected still picture cut from a piece of film. Selected, and cropped, no doubt to facilitate an outrage freakout for those in need of such things.

Let him who has not sinned cast the first stone.
