Well so far its panning out exactly as I thought it would, a "mass" of "evidence" but somehow not quite enough to press charges. How convenient.
Mame I'm not defensive on this, quite the opposite. I feel quite aggressive. The McCanns have suffered the abduction of their daughter and a totally reprehensible trial by media which seeks to make them somehow responsible for their daughters kidnap.
And when I hear reports in a French newspaper from an un named Portuguese source that Madeleine is at the bottom of the Atlantic, I feel like going round to Paris Soir or wherever and....
You know the old adage Steve.
"when you don't have facts, have an unnamed Portuguese source make something up"
Well they seem to be taking a less aggressive stance now....although it's possible the impression of agression was only given by the newspapers....from "we've got damning evidence of the McCanns' probable guilt, and charges will follow", to "we have no evidence yet of what really happened".
Wouldn't it be nice if somebody found the child safe and well.
And her kidnappers, of course.
(We could make them unsafe and unwell later)
Sensible and interesting comment on this subject from today's paper:

Why have we heard nothing of or from the other people dining and drinking with the McCanns? All I can recall reading was that one other person checked on her at one point.
That person most likely only looked in and saw what appeared to be a sleeping child.
What if, hypothetically, she died and the parents discovered her body, then realized that if it were discovered that they'd overdosed her they would be detained in a foreign country and their two other kids would be taken away. That if convicted they could possibly spend the rest of their lives in a Portuegese prison.
So, with drunken perspective they get rid of the body, only to realize that they have to some how report this.
For all we know, they could have packed Madeleine away in a suitcase until they had time to dispose of her body.
I'm just thinking out loud.

No, at least not from all was is knowm via the media. (He only checked his child's room.)
The most recent issue of People Magazine has a big article on the missing little girl.

Steve41oo, I'm just saying that we don't really know anything at all. And I merely listed questions that came to mind and repeating what I heard on the news which, as we all know, is incomplete and biased. I don't believe, as you seem to, that Madeleine was necessarily abducted ... I don't know what to believe.
Today Sir Richard Branson has donated £100,000 to the fund to help find the girl.

Then waited for months in the same place with police and sniffer dogs and media sleuths all around?
Seems most unlikely.

well I have to admit that i dont
know[/i]either.
But my intuition and all my reason tells me the McCanns are not lying.
But I could be wrong...(it has been known  )
Richard Branson Donates Money to Help Fund McCanns' Defense
Suspicion Rises Around Kate and Gerry McCann in Daughter's Disappearance
Sept. 16, 2007 ?-
Despite the cloud of suspicion surrounding them after Portuguese authorities named them as suspects in the disappearance of their child, Kate and Gerry McCann continued their campaign to find their missing 4-year-old daughter, Madeleine, as they prayed in church Sunday morning.
During the weekend, Gerry McCann's brother, John McCann, announced the launch of a new ad campaign in Portugal, Spain and other parts of Europe.
Authorities' recent suggestion that the McCanns may have killed Madeleine accidentally, has left the British couple in a difficult situation.
Defending the McCanns
In fact, the McCanns, whose daughter went missing on May 4 while on a family vacation in Portugal, now may be forced to sell their home in order to pay for legal fees.
But the parents may get help from entrepreneur Richard Branson, who offered $200,000 for their defense fund.
Maintaining Their Innocence
The McCanns have continued to maintain their innocence. And John McCann angrily denied the rumor that Madeleine had been drugged by her mother.
"Where is this information from," he questioned. "It doesn't make sense. I have no record of any official saying, 'Yes, we have this data from forensics.'"
Some Portuguese papers said Kate McCann's cool and composed demeanor throughout the investigation was a sign of her guilt.
But, her childhood friends have come to her defense.
Linda McQueen said she has no doubt her friend Kate McCann and her husband are innocent.
"They are the most loving, caring family-oriented couple that you could ever meet," she said.
Sympathy Turns To Suspicion
But, others watching the case may not be convinced as easily. The couple, which once had the world's sympathy when the story first unfolded, now has seen public opinion turned against them.
Only 20 percent of respondents in a recent British poll said they believed the McCanns are completely innocent, while 48 percent think the parents could have been responsible for Maddy's death.
ABC News
One astonishing fact I learned today (well it astonished me anyway) is that about 18,000 people have signed an online petition which says that the McCanns' remaining children should be taken away from them by social services.
Which shows the power of the tabloid press. These are the kind of people who attacked paediatricians' premises in the last national witchhunt over paediophiles, attracted by the wording on the brass plates outside. They don't know any words which are more than five letters long.
McTag,
The power of the media is indeed frightening. It is not hard to see how Hitler got away with it so effectively on the dictum "the bigger the lie, the more they will believe it".
I am sure the UK has more freedom of the press than Nazi Germany did. But it is obscene to have an online petition concerning other people's children. Does the petition have any legal force or is it just a gimmick?
Gimmick. I've not seen it myself, but I bet it originated in one of our tabloid newspapers.

I may have mis-spoken back there. The information came from a newspaper comment article. In the interests of accuracy, I googled for the petition and came up with this. It seems to be the right one, the numbers tally. It does not actually ask for the children to be taken into care, but just for an investigation.

This petition started already in May/June.
Walter Hinteler wrote:This petition started already in May/June.
Yes I think the girl went missing on 3rd May.
It echoes what many of us here said- the children should not have been left alone.
On the other hand, they were in a family-friendly resort on a holiday which was designed for children. No wonder the parents had a (misplaced) sense of security.
