Yay chicken soup!

I agree with Roberta's analysis, plus the idea of fluids being good, period (one can only drink so much water without getting bored), plus electrolytes/ sodium (maybe that's more about rehydration than ear infections -- for sozlet, one often necessitates the other).

The kid hates chicken soup too, which makes things much more complicated. I haven't really come up with a proper substitute yet. I think chicken soup is best, but if that's too gross, any soup will still be helpful, the brothier the better.

Re chicken soup - good for you, not medicine, but good for you. Ok. I buy highly pasturized chicken broth to use in risotto (I'm trying to become a little less vegetarian). I wonder if the high heat of pasturization kills the benefit.

I feel better this morning. I was feeling better last night, but nearly nauseous with exhaustion when I finally went to sleep. Got a solid 8 hours and will nap today. My congestion seems to be lessened today. My left ear doesn't feel full. My hearing is still bad in my right ear and it's been ringing more, but it feels less full.

roberta - again! It seems that I write every morning that I'm feeling better. Then every afternoon that I'm feeling worse. I'll keep my enthusiasm to a low murmur until tonight.

littlek :

from the link :
Quote:
The acetic acid inhibits the growth of bacteria in the skin.

if it is a bacterial infection , alcohol alone will likely not get rid of it .
we've been using vinegar-type ear drops for many years quite successfully - on physicians recommendation , of course .
i personally can't tolerate decongestants - they make me super-hyper - can't sleep .
hope you'll feel better soon !

Hamburger - then why do hospitals use alcohol alone and not vinegar?

Soz, I missed you up there. You haven't found a suitable soup beside chicken noodle and she hates it? I mix the chicken broth with vegie broth when I cook with broth. This way the flavor of the chicken is much diluted. I make a corn and bean soup with a roux, if you skip the roux part, you'd have broth. What about the soup doesn't she like?

Yes, rest! Your body's telling you something there. LISTEN to it!

Wanna recipe for salsa? Even the Yankees in my wife's graduate program would eat it, sweating and noses running....

2 lbs. Roma tomatoes
2 Roma tomatoes, diced
1/2 yellow onion, diced
1 bunch green onions, sliced
1 bunch fresh cilantro, (discard stems, and dice)
2 jalapeno peppers
1 Tablespoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper
add'l jalapeno or serrano peppers to taste (I usually added three serrano peppers, one or two jalapenos would probably do it for you.)

Boil the whole tomatoes until they split. Remove and allow them to cool. Boil the peppers for 10 minutes or so. (Turn on the vent fan.)

(Do not touch the cooked peppers with your bare hands; I always use a baggie to protect my hand.)

Slice two of the peppers, put the others in the blender.

Peel the cooked tomatoes (doesn't have to be perfect, but the peel is slightly bitter), add to the blender, and puree.

Stir in the rest of the ingredients.

Devour with chips; enjoy clear sinuses.

Also, salsa has been shown to have mild antibiotic properties.

It's the chili peppers. I do have a history of New Mexican food and cooking. I have a half dozen chili powders in the spice drawer. I like chipotle and N.M. chilis (hatch) best - maybe because they're roasted. I think jalapenos are sour-tasting. Maybe salsa is a good idea for today, with corn chips and an avocado.

No cumin? No lime?

Cumin is for burritos.

A little lime would be good.

I roast tomatoes and peppers over the open flame of my stove top until the skin blisters - let cool and remove skins.

That works, too, although I have a hard time peeling peppers w/o getting capsaicin all over my hands.

If you like fireworks, try nuking a green pepper.

Since I use mild peppers, the spice on my hands isn't that problematic.
