ear infection

I have an ear infection. It started to be painful today midday and started to drain a few hours ago. It is unbelievably painful. I took pain meds which didn't seem to put a dent in the pain (alka-seltzer with acetametaphen and ibuprofen). I can't sleep. They say online that when the ear punctures, it relieves the pressure and there is less pain. But, the pain hasn't abated, if anything, it hurts more when it is draining. And, tomorrow is sunday - my doctor's office isn't open. What do I do?

Seldom as I recomment a doctor's visit, I will now. Sometimes, these things just go away; they can also be serious. Sorry for not having any comfort to offer.

Oh, yeah. Sunday. I don't know what you can expect at one of the immediate care clinics. Wait for someone else to pop in, I suppose.

dj - yours went away on its own?

Roger - I know my doc office isn't open on sunday. To add to the frustration - my restless leg syndrome is acting up.

There's an over the counter medicine called auralgan. These are drops you put in the affected ear to numb the pain. You can get them at any drug store and they make a big difference in the level of pain, I've used them with my kids in the past.

Oh yeah, sorry-I missed that point. If it's draining, that means it has ruptured and you shouldn't use the drops-you're right. But I guess that means it might stop hurting soon.

Is the drainage yellowish or clear?

I've no idea except, not to freak you, hearing matters, me with less of it.

Which I mention knowing it might not be relevant, loss may occur in other circumstances. (But when? I don't know when I lost mine, might have been the basketball hit, or all that rock and roll..).

By now it's two in the morning there, I can see why you don't rush out the door. But... does your med group have any contact number? I think this is worth rousing whoever is on call..

Pain-wise: I remember pouring 500 degree plastic on my hand, which in turn blew up like a balloon and the Tylenol3 didn't make it feel any less like it was still burning, so when dose time came I switched to Vodka and Coke. Cut a notch in the giant ball of gauze so I could shoot pool a couple hours later.

thanks bill.

the drainage looks like the juice you'd find at the bottom of a package of steak. It's clear and red. I've used up a dozen qtips. The bubbling and squeaking noises seem to be less frequent now and it could just be that the pain is easing up. Maybe that's because I've sat up. I just want to go to sleep.

How much ibuprofen can I take? Nemmind, I'll look it up.

My doc office is associated with a full-service hospital which has a walk-in clinic (not common around here), they open at 10 am tomorrow. In 8 friggin hours.

it sounds like that's drainage from the infection which is good. It sounds like you're doing about all you can for the pain over the counter (tylenol and ibuprofen mixed).

I know these can be really painful-my seventeen year old son had an ear infection last year and he was crying like a baby-I hadn't seen him cry like that in years.

I hope you feel better soon.

I don't get that you can't call? They don't have a call through number?

(not that I'm connected to now to a place I can call, but just sayin')
