AL manager of the year: Jim Leyland (DET)
he beat out Ron Gardenhire (MIN), Ken Macha (OAK), and Joe Torre (NYY)

NL: Joe Girardi (FLA)
beating out Willie Randolph (NYM), Bruce Bochy (SD), Grady Little (LA), Charlie Manuel (PHI), Jerry Narron (CIN), and Phil Garner (HOU).

ironically, Girardi was fired by the marlins, having had a very public run-in with the owner Jeffrey Loria.
he will be doing play-by-play for NYY next year...

This sucks. Jeter should have won!

Quote:
In one of the closest votes in years, first baseman Justin Morneau, who led the Minnesota Twins back from a 12-game deficit in July to the American League Central division crown, edged New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter for the American League Most Valuable Player Award.

Morneau, who batted .321 with 34 home runs and 130 RBI, was named first on 15 of the 28 ballots cast by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

Jeter, who was second in the league in batting with a .343 average and had 214 hits, 118 runs, 97 RBI and a career-high 34 stolen bases, was listed first on 12 ballots. The other first-place vote went to Twins pitcher and unanimous Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana (19-6, 2.77 ERA, 245 strikeouts in 233 ? innings), who placed seventh overall with 114 points.

I think Holliday, Beckett and Peavy are all cinches, and I agree on them.

Beckett should also win MVP for the America League, but that would be too much for Boston (which will also get Rookie of the Year, methinks), so I think A-Rod will get it, but only because the Yanks qualified and the Tigers (with Maglio OrdoƱez) did not.

in the NL, Braun edged Tulowitzki by 2 points...

Had they asked me, Tulo would have won... and Joakim Soria would have gotten another vote.
Braun can't field! The game is baseball, not home run derby.

On the other hand, Pedroia was the proper choice.

Confused

the reetoddid sports writers of america gave the AL cy young to cc sabathia.
he beat beckett 119-86 (19-8 in 1st place votes).

here are the stats:

beckett
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/4903/beckwg4.jpg

sabathia
http://img67.imageshack.us/img67/6224/sabbmv9.jpg

i am friggin' flabbergasted.

since when is innings pitched a determining factor for the cy young?
(a lot of good it did sabathia -- he was burned out in the postseason)...

Maybe they didn't want all the hardware in the Boston clubhouse. You know, in case there's a breakin.

sabathia did have a few more quality starts.

it's possible beckett lost because his team didn't depend on him as much as cleveland depended on their ace.

still, it should've been closer than 19-8.

i do take solace in reading that the NY writer who didn't cast a vote for beckett said he would've voted him in unanimously had it included both regular season and postseason stats...

Innings pitched is a big factor. Not to mention CC is in a tougher division. I also heard one of the guys on sports radio say at the time of the voting, Cleveland was the "hot team," so that may have factored in.

At least Beckett got a WS ring.
