New Orleans: The Worst is Not Over : (

A very long article but some very worthy paragraphs. Those poor poor people.... Crying or Very sad

Quote:

Quote:
Already, 2,800 National Guardsmen are in the city, he said.

But across the flooded-out city, the rescuers themselves came under attack from storm victims hungry, desperate and tired of waiting.

"Hospitals are trying to evacuate," said Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Cheri Ben-Iesan, spokesman at the city emergency operations center. "At every one of them, there are reports that as the helicopters come in people are shooting at them. There are people just taking potshots at police and at helicopters, telling them, `You better come get my family.'"

Quote:

Outside the Convention Center, the sidewalks were packed with people without food, water or medical care, and with no sign of law enforcement. Thousands of storm refugees had been assembling outside for days, waiting for buses that did not come.

At least seven bodies were scattered outside, and hungry people broke through the steel doors to a food service entrance and began pushing out pallets of water and juice and whatever else they could find.

An old man in a chaise lounge lay dead in a grassy median as hungry babies wailed around him. Around the corner, an elderly woman lay dead in her wheelchair, covered with a blanket, and another body lay beside her wrapped in a sheet.

"I don't treat my dog like that," 47-year-old Daniel Edwards said as he pointed at the woman in the wheelchair. "I buried my dog." He added: "You can do everything for other countries but you can't do nothing for your own people. You can go overseas with the military but you can't get them down here."

Quote:
John Murray, 52, said: "It's like they're punishing us."

Quote:
"This is a national emergency. This is a national disgrace," he said. "FEMA has been here three days, yet there is no command and control. We can send massive amounts of aid to tsunami victims, but we can't bail out the city of New Orleans."

Quote:
"A great American city is fighting for its life," he added. "We must rebuild New Orleans, the city that gave us jazz, and music, and multiculturalism."

Nobody should begrudge the "looting." It's there for them, all they have for the next several days. Let them have it. I notice journalists are there, asking questions of desperate people, getting them to say how bad off they are. Did they bring anything for the people, in whatever vehicle brought them there?

Why? I certainly understand stealing food, water and medicine. For some people is IS a matter of life and death. But the pictures that I saw showed kids looting sneakers and T shirts. Disgusting! Evil or Very Mad

achh, let 'em take the sneakers and t-shirts - as long as they don't hurt anyone to get them.

It really is a matter of no-never-mind.

It is hurting the shopowners who PAID for the stuff.

Let them have food--but shoot them if they try to steal drugs from hospitals or car jack.

It is WRONG that they are stealing jewelry and TVs.

Reports are that there are groups who pre-planned looting. I don't know where they plan to take it--but they're ****, IMO, as low as gougers.

The helicopters trying to bring stuff and get people out ARE BEING SHOT AT BY THE CRAZED CROWDS.

Nobody's going to end National Guardsmen in to be murdered.

That's because these people are scared and frantic. The longer this goes on, the worse it will become. People are trapped, backed against a wall of water without any hope because they feel forgotten.

If the National Guard can be sent to Iraq to be murdered, why should they not be committed to such a worthwhile effort at home?

Sell that to a Guardsman.

At least in Iraq, they can take cover if fired upon. They don't have to fly toward the gunfire.

If you'll recall, when called to the National service, the militia are under the command of the Army, and by extension, the Commander in Chief. "Selling" them anything is not an issue.

But perhaps you won't remember, if you've never read and understood the constitution.

My solution is simple; order more rescuers. We can't get back the last few days. But we can take control of the present. The faster we get these people out, the less likely they will be to riot.

At least you offered one Bella--but I don't think people here are allowing it to absorb that the crowds are hampering their own rescue by attacking and shooting at rescuers. More rescuers =more targets.

The headlines scream "anarchy". If anyone thinks they'd prefer anarchy, NO is the place for them to try it on.

I think the results of this are going to make things even worse--divisively--in this country--and I didn't think that was possible.

I'm not clear why not all federal and state employees are not automatically called in to be involved. That's the process here for stuff like forest fires. If the front line employees in government are in place/in use, it just works down the chain.

I was told yesterday that a number of the insurance carriers/major adjusting firms have already flown staff from around North America into the region to prepare to do assessments and write cheques, with back up plans for the emptied offices already in place. Hard to believe governments don't have similar roster plans.

Right. But get less shooters and you have less bullets. Get the people out now and fast. Stop what's happening now and deal with the consequences.

We've never had a major city underwater before, coupled with the people who are being rescued trying to kill their rescuers.

Would you mind faxing over your plan for that?

There's no solution at this time. It's just that the looters think they found one if just for a day or so.
Yes, it's wrong to take stuff not yours but it'll just mildew and rot anyway.

Those who are shooting at rescuers, getting violent - they are losing their minds in all that filth and heat. God, you could forget who you are fairly quickly.
