I've been wandering around the boards the past few days finding many topics of interest. Food and wine are two of my favorate things but then the other side has to come into play occasionally too. Fitness and recovery are my counterbalance.

I never had a weight management problem until I turned 40 when my metabolism went to sleep and I gained 10lbs without any changes to my diet or lifestyle. Since then I've gained and lost the same 10 (sometimes 15) lbs every year. I work out with weights 2-3 times a week and walk almost daily year round so the difference really comes from my food (and wine) intake. Every January I recover from the holidays by getting down to my goal weight of 165 lbs which is fine for my 6'0" body. Then I do a pretty good job of maintaining it over the summer. I live in the cold north so I always tell myself that my increased appetite in the fall is my body trying to bulk up for the coming winter - yeah, right - and the best way to bulk up is with hearty sauces, pastas and Christmas treats.

So here is another January 1 and another year to recover from the holidays. I weighed in this morning at 176 so I've got 11 lbs to lose over the next couple months. I tend to be addicted to my scale during these periods because I need the feedback to stay motivated. So, my goal is to lose 11 lbs by the end of February and get comfortable back into my size 10 jeans because my ratty old 12s are getting tight and I refuse to buy any new ones and I'm definately not buying any more 14s. I gave those away two years ago and won't go back there.

I've followed different plans over the years including a couple I designed myself. They all work if I stick with them. I'm currently in a SB type mode, when not eating cookies, of whole grains, fruits and veggies, and lean proteins. My workouts consists of 30 - 60 minutes of cardio daily (30 on weight train days, 60 otherwise), weight training 2-3 times/week and abs 3-4 times/week.

I'll check in here to offer support to everyone else. Hope you'll do the same for me.

I never reached my goal of 190+, still floating between 180-184ish. Hit a f'n plateau. It's hard to do it by eating healthy and not bulk too much.

I need to consistently eat more, and not miss gym days. It's tough.

The gym is going to be packed this month, until all the wannabes quit 3 weeks later.

I wasn't directing that at you, it's just every January the gym is packed with everyone intending to workout, and a month later it goes back to normal.

J_B. --

Welcome.

I admire your practicality in buying jeans in only two sizes. I'm the sort of glutton who can overeat with enthusiasm, but who hates to waste/spend money.

Dag--

You should be trim again by springtime. Your schedule demands "easy' food and 'easy" food has calories that can creep up on you--and pounce.

Slappy--

Look around the gym--behind the treadmills there is an exit door, labeled "Good Intentions" Over the door is a sign, "Abandon All Hope".

I'm getting highly annoyed with my gym. A bunch of dumbells have broken, they throw them away, and don't replace them. I've complained a few times, they don't care.

I made it through the weekend without gaining any more which is always a challenge. I'm off to the club to join the masses. Cardio and weights today.

J_B--

I'm glad to see someone else with seasonal intentions.

Push that heart! Lift those weights!

My holiday season has almost finished--but my guests this week are also dieting, so I have no excuses.

Slappy--

God permits flawed dumb bells, why not your gym?

May 2005 will be the last year either of us trudge up that never-ending hill with slow-learning Sisyphus. He'll have to roll that stone all by himself without the company of Good Women. You and I will be slim and vibrant and off to Experience Real Life.

Happy New Year.

I went to the gym today, one of the busiests days of the year typically, but not too bad. I suspect it will be really bad tomorrow, people probably stayed away today expecting crowds. Either that or they're still stuck in a snow drift up in Tahoe.
