clary--

I'm not an authority on the South Beach Diet. I'm losing weight by eating less and moving more. Here's a link:

Say "Hello" to Marie.

Everyone else:

8/16/04 is the Official Start of Peel-A-Pound week at A2K. All are welcome and any number can play.

Clary -- I'm not an expert, but I've had great results from South Beach, and I can give you a synopsis. It emphasizes choosing good carbs (whole grains, fruits) instead of bad carbs (refined flour, white potatoes, white rice, sugar)...and good fats (olive oil, canola oil, nuts, avocados) instead of bad fats (saturated fats, trans fats).

Overall, it's a very sensible, balanced diet with a lot of variety. There is no weighing & measuring, and you don't have to count servings or any of that tedious nonsense. It just teaches you to make better choices. All foods are listed as either "Good," "Limited," or "Avoid or Eat Rarely." They rely somewhat on the glycemic index...how your body processes the foods makes a big difference. For instance, fruit juices are marked "Avoid" because the concentrated sugars in them literally speed into your bloodstream. Whole fruit, on the other hand, is marked "Good" because the fiber in them slows down the metabolism of these foods enough that they don't cause rapid rises in blood sugar (which are always followed by rapid decreases and the subsequent carbohydrate cravings.)

Lean meats, seafood, vegetables (except corn & white potatos), fruits (except banana, pineapple & watermelon), whole grains (except white rice), legumes, fat-free or low-fat cheeses and dairy foods, eggs, nuts, and condiments without added sugar are the staples of the South Beach Diet. In addition, you can have a glass of wine and a little bit of chocolate or other treats (75 calories per day.)

This is the regular phase of the diet. There is a very strict introductory phase (first 2 weeks) that typically results in a quick 8-13 lb. weight loss (12 lbs. in my case!) And once you reach your target, there is a maintenance plan as well.

Finally, my water weight vanished. I'm down to 123 again and hoping for 122 by next Monday. How are the rest of you doing?

we need the prince with us!

maybe just don't focus on 'dieting' - focus on eating better - it's really helped me. i actually snapped at someone today who commented on my lunch and the effect of my 'diet'. "It is NOT a diet!!!" I'm noticing a change in how I like to eat. I miss my salad if I somehow don't arrange my lunch purchases properly. Shocked

Eva, thanks very much for that synopsis. It is very much the diet that I worked out for myself years ago but alas, fail to keep to for various reasons! I would say low-fat cheeses etc are perhaps not a great idea for me, and I tend to avoid cheese altogether, but on the other hand I believe butter has been reinstated in the Goodies list for its nutritional content. After all, margarine has a formula not unlike plastic, and the more tampered with the worse, as far as I am concerned. I am now in HK and cooking for the friend I'm staying with as a thank you - we are both on low-carb diets and I am trying to find interesting and good veg for salads - quite a challenge! I hope to lose a lb a day for the moment - high expectations but it's very hot here, and should be quite painless. Feel better already!

Been into the cookie jar lately (for shame!).
On the positive side, I jogged 4 miles at lunch yesterday, and played an hour of pickup soccer last night (de agony of de feet!).

Yes but alas for my diet , I have been fed and entertained by so many people, and the weather is so stormy and wet, that I am probably fatter than when i got here - but hell, the people are the most important thing!! Smile Laughing

Special circumstances.....when will you be Stateside (and stringent)? Plenty of time to reform after you return.

Oh yes...it's hard to control your diet when you're away from home.

I think I came through the cruise pretty well, all things considered. I ate fairly sensibly, but did indulge a little. After all, it was a cruise!!! That's no time to play the martyr. Plus, I was a lot more active than usual. Trekking through Mayan ruins, snorkeling, sightseeing...plus, it's just amazing how much walking you have to do on those big ships.

Still don't have a scale, but will go back to the doctor's office at the end of September and check the numbers. My clothes still fit about the same, though, so I can't be far off.

It was tough going back to the diet when I came home. The first couple of days were mixed...then by Wednesday I had completely recovered and was eating right again. Today I feel normal, not hungry. So I'm back on track.

Good for you. You not only had a cruise, you managed an "Engineered Plateau" which will help you stabilize your new figure.

Keep holding.

Now on the third day of my 'clean out' program in Thailand - no scales around so I have no idea how thin I'm getting. We have herbal supplements and detox drinks five times a day, and then colemas twice a day - 16litres of coffee and cider vinegar, albeit diluted, up into the intestines - very cleansing. I've done it before and I enjoy it in a way.. Trick is to go very gradually back onto real food at the end, and try to keep the appetite small. Only 4 more days to go... Smile

hiya, i'm back! tanned from greece, slimmer and toned up - did lots of swimming and running everyday. now the key is to continue in this trend and not slide off. have been moving this past weekend, 3 days of hauling stuff, lifting and carrying, that ought to count as a great workout. plus jetlag and lack of sleep, that must count for something too. perfection acoming. dominion held.

The US Labor Day holiday weekend has come and gone.

The good news - I always feel in a "fresh start" kind of mood at this time of year. I am ready to re-energize my program.

The bad news - my backsliding over the holiday means I'd darn well better get back on the program!
