Hiama--

Before I leave the house and venture forth into opressive heat, I take a bundle of frozen washclothes (encased in plastic bags) out of the freezer and drop them in my tote bag.

By pressing these ice packs against my temples, my neck, my wrists, the back of my knees....any place where the blood runs close to the surface, I can preserve a bit of up right dignity.

Fortunately a number of places in this weary world are air conditioned.

Also fortunately, spring and fall, are delightful seasons.

In six months, I'll be complaining about the cold..... Meanwhile, high heat and humidity, low appetite.

OK- I have lost about 14 lbs in around 5-6 weeks. I am doing Atkins, and it seems to be working. I am also going to the gym. It is too hot to walk so I am doing:

Treadmill- 1 hour- between 3.5-4.2 mph.
Abductor/Adductor machine- I never remember which is which...... but the one that goes in I do 110 lbs. Out- 140 lbs.
Biceps curl with free weights- 15 lbs 20 reps
Triceps machine- 20 reps. 100 lbs.
Lie on bench and raise 25 lb. weight over head- 20 reps.
Back machine- 150 lbs.
Upper ab. machine 80lbs. 20 reps.
Waist twist with bar from barbell- usually 1 song long.
Started pull downs- could only manage 70 lbs (I used to do 100, when I was younger)

Whole shootin' match takes about 1 1/2 hours......and people are starting to make remarks to me about changes! Very Happy

Phoenix, fan-bloody-tastic to use an expression of a friend of mine.

Well done, keep it going, it really is worth it.

I had to can the wieghts a bit as I was getting big headed and was bench pressing 150 lbs in 3 sets of 10-12 and I ripped my left pectoral-and it hurst to do anything to do with pecs, lats-did a few bicep curls this week nothing now until Sunday.

Keep the faith Very Happy

I may need heavier weights, the 10 pounders are too light. Not a bad thing. I would prefer more weight and less reps. Started the Lohan again....forgot how painful it is on the legs....stairs not an option today. A few more days perhaps, but we have an elevator anyway Very Happy

Hiama...do some light warmups before throwing up the 150, and you shouldn't pull anything. Start with just the bar, then 95 lbs for 6-8, then 135 for 2-3 reps to get ready for the 150.

My gym's dumbells up to 100lbs are the same. 105's and up are these old, clunky dumbells with very thick grips, very uncomfortable. I can press the 100's on inclines for 8-9 reps clean, then I tried the 105's, and could barely get 3...what UP WITH THAT! There has to be a bigger difference than just 5lbs. I'm pissed.

I actually did the reverse 10 x 150 lbs, then 10 x 135 lbs, then 10 x 110lbs

When you start that heavy, you're just begging to get hurt. If I'm starting my chest workout with barbell bench, I still start with the bar to loosen up, 95lbs...135...and work my way up. But I don't exhaust myself with a lot of reps until my heaviest set, which is my first "working set." I haven't hurt myself in years, and used to pull my shoulder all the time doing what you were doing.

Wonderful! I am in a state of pea-green, tooth-gnashing envy. You have become another one of my Good Examples.

Congratulations! Hold your dominion.

I used to be into the gym about 19 years ago, which lasted for quite a few years........Then I gave up on it.

The thing that is good is that I can remember how to do the workout correctly. The form that I see on some people lifting weights is abominable.

The numbers that I gave you are an increase from when I started some weeks ago. I want to start concentrating on the pulldowns, increasing the weights, and add the lower abs. (high chair).

One thing that I find that really helps in the gym is music. I could fall asleep with the stuff that they play there. I use a Walkman, and I have a number of good tapes that are designed for workouts. They really get me going!

Hiama--

I had a Christian Science cousin who used to quote Mary Baker Eddy (a mistress of postive thinking), "God has given me dominion over the things of this earth and I intend to hold my dominion."

I have a weakness for dramatic rhetoric--ecumenical rhetoric. After all, the devil may quote scripture for her own purposes.

After two months, I finally managed to drag my sorry butt to the gym for a good one hour workout. But the a/chad conked out, and it was pure torture.

On top of that Danny (my trainer and easily the most good looking guy in the gym) has shaved off his goatee - and it was so distracting !!!

But after burning 600 odd calories - it felt good.
