Bethie, are you taking pain killers before or after class? Or both? Shocked

Sorry to hear about your bicep, Slappy - that's gotta hurt. I'm a wimp about injuries.

I practically did a full-strength workout today. 30 minutes on the elliptical, 30 on the recumbent bike. And I only had to stop to cough a few times. Very Happy

mac11 - amazingly, I'm taking fewer painkillers now than I needed to take before I started taking these classes. I do suspect that I may need a little something tonight as my knees are feeling some of tonight's drills Confused

Rotten about the bicep problem, Slappy. On the upside, you're going to have killer abs. (did you notice when something went whack with the bicep?)

Soz--

Have you been to the gym yet?

JPB--

Can you hold your holiday gain down to a small gain? You get involved in gently chivving and cosseting everyone else and then you award yourself sweets, fats and a highball. Bad tradeoff.

EhBeth--

Are you training for a tour in Afghanistan during which Our Heroine, disguised as a belly dancer, will infiltrate the Taliban causing destruction and dismay in a civilized, Canadian fashion?

Mac--

Fitness lingers. I think you should get extra points tacked on (or extra ounces subtracted) from crawling from a sickbed to a gym.

Slappy--

You're the expert, but do you really have to wait a week for the appointment?

Laughing

Glad you're starting to feel better, mac. Those lingering illnesses are no fun.

Wow! Great workout! How'd you feel afterward?

Road/sidewalk conditions here are dicey.
I managed to get 4-miler in yesterday, but I was pussy-footing some of
the way. If it doesn't get out of the teens (Farenheit) today, I'll stay in
and do some upper body.
I need to impose a little more dietary discipline on myself
(so what else is new?).

Slaps, good luck with the orthopaedic guy.
I know some good folks locally (Medford/Malden) if you need a second
opinion.

Thanks George. I felt tired but ok afterwards. I was seriously pissed off about a work situation, so I think I had some adrenaline help from that.

My usual workout is 30 on the ellip, 30 on the bike 6 or 7 days a week plus 20-30 minutes of weight/resistance work 2 or 3 days a week. Sometimes I change it up with the treadmill. I'm hoping to be back up to speed next week.

Shocked Wow, teens. I'm speechless.

That was earlier. It's warmed up to 28 now, so no excuses.
I'm meeting some folks for dinner tonight, so I'd better hit the road at
lunch.

snowing ... big storm on its way here ... blechhhh

~~~
this sort of belongs on the smile thread, but credit belongs to this thread
Office Holiday party on the weekend. You know, schmoozing/meeting/greeting/air kissing. Today one of my colleagues came and told me that her husband hadn't recognized me for about the first three hours of the party. I look so different since the last time he saw me (he commented that my face seemed longer, and apparently that my body is quite a different shape) Shocked Very Happy Cool He asked her if I was the same Beth that kept asking her to come along to belly-dancing --- why, yes it is. He suggested she join me in the New Year Laughing
thanks TeamA2K !!!
True - and yes, small or no gain is the goal. I actually weigh what I weighed the week before we left for New Orleans in late October. I have two holiday events this coming weekend, then 10 days 'til Christmas feasts, one week recovery 'til New Year's, and then two more weeks to my birthday. I won't complain too loudly if I'm still the same weight in mid-January even though it's still 10 lbs too high. I haven't seen a "7" in the middle since Oct 23rd and it doesn't look like I'll see the next one until late January. I did manage to burn 600+ cals at the club today. How are you doing?
Slappy -- Keep us posted on your arm. Sounds painful as hell.
Mac -- Well done on getting it done (weight loss and work outs). You're the star!
ehbeth -- very cool. very, very cool. Congrats!
soz -- get your butt to the gym!
George -- enjoy your evening but be careful outside. I imagine your conditions are much like mine. Definitely treadmill season here.
Yeah, it's a challenge, isn't it? Must be some kind of atavistic urge to
hibernate. Storing fat and sleeping -- sounds like a plan.
My arm isn't in pain when I'm doing normal things. Up to a couple weeks ago, I could feel a strain even if holding a beer, but that's pretty much gone away. Usually only notice it if I lift something heavy, however I know what motions to avoid.
I never really noticed exactly when it happened, I probably just thought it was sore. It was never a ridiculous pain, more just nagging.
I'm going to this doctor on a referral, and the 18th was the first available appointment. On top of it, I was living with this for at least a month before even calling.
I went to the gym.
It was great!
Do I ever say, "Man, I went to the gym and it so sucked..."
No, I do not.
I'm always so much happier after I go to the gym.
I know I'm busy but I really really gotta emphasize this, even if I have to put off other things.
(Just kind of yelling at myself, for future reference.)
JPB--
Pity one burns so few calories fretting and stewing.
Montana--
Shoveling snow is a great calorie burning exercise.
Soz--
Great! You made the gym.
Now, your next workout will be when?
Friday.
Then next Monday. Then next Wednesday. Then next Friday.
You get the picture...
Then I'll have to be a bit more creative when sozlet's on xmas break, but have started working on that already (lots of playdates, mostly).
Leg Curl
Calf Raise
Leg Extension
Arm Curl
Triceps Extension
and finish up with some ab work.
I have been participating in another forum for weightlifting that I've found very helpful. I'm not sure if I can cross promote forums, but I'll give it a try. This particular weight training program has been a VERY good experience for me over the last 3 weeks. I've seen strength gains that I never saw doing workouts similar to the one you listed. (my squat for example has gone from a 155lb 5 rep max to a 185lb 5 rep max in just 3 weeks (a 20% gain))
The workout is really easy to, it's only 5 different exercises, but since they are all compound exercises you hit all the main and secondary muscle groups.
http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=998224
I'm not sure what your specific goals are for weight training, but this has been great for me. I even got my girlfriend to do it and she's not seeing the same gains of course, but it appears to be much more effective than what she was doing.
Of course it only last about 6-9 months and you have to find something else, but still.
