I also have added 3 pounds since starting this program and since I'm only eating about 3000 calories / day it's pretty much all muscle. I look huge compared to what did (I'm still a weakling, but it's all relative right?).

I FELL APART at Thanksgiving. Lost all willpower. Everything is just so delicious. Cookies, cakes, pies, potato chips, strawberry daiquiris. So I've added an additional five reps to each exercise, two sets per workout, and next week I'll add another five and hopefully that will carry me through but my middle looks bloated already. And we're not even at the halfway point yet, are we?

Thanks for the link. I should note that the weight training is not primarily
for me but for my son Clive. Clive has serious issues with gross and fine
motor skills. Most of what we do involves machines for the sake of safety.
For me, I just like working out keeping the muscle groups active. For Clive,
he has a bit of hypotonia, so he needs the weight bearing exercise to keep
from looking like an absolute beanpole. Just as important to him (and me)
is the socialization. Gym sessions are our boys' night out.

I did four miles on the roads at lunch, so I don't expect much of my
62-year-old pins tonight. But I expect Clive and I to have good time and
reap some physical benefit.

Keep up the good work, brother, and thanks again.

~George

I treated myself to a haircut and new colour today - then while I was at the opthamologist I finally ordered new glasses (I can't wait to preview those!).

Just as I was going to post a photo here (feeling pretty good in spite of some sinus stuff that shows up in the photo) when this arrived in my email from my favourite Guyanese resto

Love your new dew Beth :-D

George, yes, I'm in hibernation mode and there's always food everywhere at this time of year, as in most homes. Getting through the holidays is always the worst.

Noddy, Have myself a new plow guy this year :-) I use to love to shovel, but with having an old back injury and a hiatal hernia (spelling), I don't want to hurt myself anymore Laughing

I lost the few pounds, so all is well. My weight fluctuates a lot within 5 lbs, so my weight is different every day Laughing

Keep on truckin everyone :-D

Soz--

I hope the weather doesn't get in your way tomorrow. You are planning on going to the gym, aren't you?

Eoe--

Restraint. Balance. Restraint. Very difficult for a practical, passionate woman, but you can do it.

George--

Your gym time sounds like the best sort of multi-tasking.

Montana--

Holiday excitement, new business excitement--even prospective wedding bells excitement.

Food is not going to improve the excitement situation--unless you want to eat yourself into a torpor like a boa constrictor.

JPB--

You can do it.

The snow is snowing and the winds are blowing and I'm in for 24-72 hours of Enforced Family Togetherness. Fortunately we're low on baked goods--although in a pinch you can spread cream cheese on almost anything.

Went to the gym Friday, went to the gym today!

Reporting in definitely helps so I'm gonna keep doing it (even if nobody's interested...)

While nothing drastic has happened, a couple of things I've noticed:

1.) My stamina/ basic fitness level seems to be pretty good. This weekend I shoveled a whole lot of extremely heavy snow, and just enjoyed myself. It was hard work, but I was energized rather than exhausted. (Offered to help my neighbor when I was done.)

Also, E.G. was worried about some creak in the basement stairs and asked me to walk up and down them while he listened various places -- I went up and down and up and down about 8 times total (4 up 4 down), and my knees were complaining a bit by the end but I wasn't remotely winded. (Stairs have gotten me in the past.)

2.) I have a bunch of clothes that fit me. I realized that for the past several (6 or so) winters I've gone up about half a size from the previous winter, or one "real" size... like from 8 to "9", or somewhere between 8 and 10. (Some 8s fit, some don't; some 10s fit, some are too big.) I've usually had to go buy some clothes when it got cold because I didn't have quite enough that fit me. Not this year -- everything from last year fits well to a little big.

So if I'm not making any drastic progress yet, at least I'm not continuing recent trends. (If a penny saved is a penny earned, is a pound not gained a pound lost?)

Well I know that this is a weight loss thread and all, but since I hit my goal weight of 180 a few months back (down from 210) I've been on a weight training program and focusing on building muscle w/ minimal fat. I'm pleased to say that after 8 weeks of weight training I've put on 8lbs and I'm fairly confident that most of it is muscle. My body looks quite a bit different than it used to (I'll post pictures later today).

12 more pounds to go and I'll hit my goal weight (back up to 200).

I will add that it has been MUCH harder to build muscle than it was to lose fat, but well worth it.

Soz--

Very good. May I suggest an encore for Wednesday. I'm interested.

Congratulations on keeping your wardrobe useable. Perhaps by next winter you'll need to downsize.

Maporsche--

Go for the goal. You've been making substantial progress.

WEDNESDAY, Dec. 12 (HealthDay News) -- Computer-generated phone call reminders are an effective, low-cost method to encourage sedentary adults to exercise, a new Stanford University School of Medicine study suggests.

The yearlong study of 218 people over the age of 55 found that regular phone reminders by either health educators or an automated computer system were equally good at nudging the participants into a regular 150-minute per week exercise regimen.

"This is the first study to directly compare the efficacy of a physical activity program delivered by a computer versus humans and found them to work similarly well," study author Abby King, a professor of health research and policy and a senior investigator at the Stanford Prevention Research Center, said in a prepared statement. "Theoretically, [computer reminders] could be delivered to anybody around the country, or around the world, and could save time and money."

At the start of this study, 80 percent to 85 percent of the participants said they would prefer or need a live human voice to prompt them to exercise. The results showed that wasn't true. After six months, the group receiving calls from people and the group receiving computer calls were doing the same amount of exercise. After one year, there was little difference between the two groups -- 157 minutes per week for those who received computer calls and 178 minutes a week for those who received human voice calls.

A control group that received no reminder calls averaged 118 minutes of exercise a week.

The study was published in the current issue of Health Psychology.

I've been icebound for six days. Unfortunately we missed the window of opportunity for the plow to take advantage of the layer of fluffy snow under the sleet and rain. Now we have two solid inches of ice bonded to the asphalt of the driveway.

Mr. Noddy has no trouble getting up and down the driveway. I know I can get down, but I'm very aware that I might not be able to get the car up the driveway. If so, I'm exiled. I can't walk up on the ice.

On Monday and Tuesday--using a lot of salt--I chipped a clear path from the house to the garage (an exhausting 40' project).

Even if I hadn't offended and compounded my previously sore shoulder, I wouldn't be able to chip a clear path for fifty yards.

Character Building Experiences. Hah!

Yeah, I agree with George. Yikes! Even lots and lots of salt and sand doesn't help? Chipping ice like that is brutal.

Went to the gym today!

Didn't have time for measurements but weight is down a few pounds for the first time. As in, the muscle-building part may have maxed out, and now we get to the fat-burning part. We'll see.

Sorry to hear about your exile, noddy. I hope you get a warm spell soon.

I've purged 5 lbs in two days. I haven't eaten anything except a couple club crackers. I don't even like the thought of food. At least I slept last night.
