Yup, I really missed getting my butt kicked regularly Very Happy

I tend to go right to pain - without having to wait for the second day - but I'm always ready to be surprised.

Nuthin' like regular butt-kickin' to make ya look forward to each new day!

It would take a very formidable woman to cow ehBeth into gut-jerking obedience.

Nada is indeed formidable.

Zahira keeps me going through charm and encouragement. Nada does it with love and fear.

Tonight was "pain by way of charm" night. If I could unhook my shoulders and put them on a bench beside me right now, I would Confused

Soooo, I'm reading and they have the nerve to say

Quote:
Just last month, the American Heart Association and the American College of Sports Medicine published joint guidelines for physical activity and health. They suggested that 30 minutes of moderate physical activity five days a week is necessary to "promote and maintain health." What they didn't say, though, was that more physical activity will lead us to lose weight. Indeed, the best they could say about the relationship between fat and exercise was this: "It is reasonable to assume that persons with relatively high daily energy expenditures would be less likely to gain weight over time, compared with those who have low energy expenditures. So far, data to support this hypothesis are not particularly compelling." In other words, despite half a century of efforts to prove otherwise, scientists still can't say that exercise will help keep off the pounds.

It's a longish, interesting, article.

I don't know too many people who just exercise and don't diet (with the expectation of losing weight) as that article suggests that many people do. How many people trying to lose weight think it's ok to run for an hour and then eat half a pizza?

It has also been suggested that a weight training program, in combination with diet and cardio exercise is the most effective way to lose weight.

As far as carbohydrate intake. 50% of my calories come from carbs and I haven't had any problem dropping pounds. Sure my carbs are mostly whole grain breads and rice, but still, not all carbs are bad...just the one's you drink and the ones that haunt you down the candy/chip isle.

Thanks, Beth. Interesting article. I don't think it will change my routine though!

I'm definitely curious to see where that Finnish research will go next.

I'm sticking with the combo of walking, being aware of what I eat, and some kinda exercise program.

Consider that the majority of people who hike the length of the Applachian trail gain muscle and lose fat over those 2175 miles.

Walking all day burns calories like the proverbial lumberjack. Carrying your own food tends to limit your intake of food.

Exceptions "test" the rule, "proving" the rule as valid or invalid.

I've lost some fat, and increased my muscle mass. How do I know?
Besides my silly scale that tells me my body fat percentage, weight, I just look and feel good.

No wonder beth is so passionate about her bellydancing. Dancing does make a woman feel like a goddess.

And it is damn tough work too. Not for the weak! Laughing

Thank you, Noddy. Smile

So how is everyone doing?

It's Thanksgiving weekend here, and the feasting starts today. Oh boy. Have mercy on me.

That's another good thing about working out hard regularly: it seems to curb my gluttony. I'll feast; but my brain doesn't forget what it is doing. And my body seems to reject too much 'junk' at this point, again.

I'm baaaack. The good me.

Well, I've maintained my weight lifting schedule. 5 days a week for the last 3 weeks. It's a total body workout so I've been sore all over. I've gained approx 2lbs of muscle, but probably 1lb of fat as my calorie intake has had to increase.

I hear that after 3 weeks you really start to see some quicker gains (at least for the next couple of weeks then it tapers off). I'm hoping that in the next 3 weeks I can report some much better news.

So, who wants to be the one to whap me upside the head? (Hey, just one is enough!)

I've been a slug for the past couple of weeks. Started with sozlet being sick. Couldn't go that day. Then had to catch up from her being sick. Got SO much done that day. Wanted to keep getting a lot done. Got out of the habit. Dammit.

I plan to start again on Monday -- please punish me in whatever manner you see fit if I haven't reported that I did work out that day by, hmm, 7:00 PM EST.

Thank you.

Maporsche, that is kick ass! That is some serious gains, actually, it's no easy task putting on muscle mass.
Way to go.

Soz, I'd be more inclined to give ya a hug or a friendly arm on the shoulder here.
Taking care of a little girl, saw your unusual sleeping times now, and that means that not only Sozlette but you too need the recoup time.

Seeing it up here will urge you enough. You are too tenacious to sit back for long. lol.

Aw, you're sweet, mushypancakes, thanks! (I still haven't lit on what to call you for short. Any preferences?)

Great job on the dancing, I know what you mean about feeling like yourself again! I definitely want that.

And great going, maporsche, I'm impressed.

Hey there, mushyP's! dancing is amazing, isn't it. I particularly like that I can practice tiny pieces of choreography anywhere - it's amazing how many 3/4 shimmies I can get in waiting for the bus at the end of the day.

I'll be watching, Soz. I'll be watching.

I did a nine-miler this morning, then went to the gym with Clive.
Not the best idea I ever had.

My weight is hovering around 165.
That's the lowest it has been in many years.

I fully expect to hear all about your Monday workout, soz. Something about putting it in writing helps, imo.

I had teeny gains for three weeks in a row, then a one pound loss last week to knock most of that back off. With luck, I'll hit a new all-time low (well, ok, not all-time, but a 30 year low anyway) at Wednesday's weigh-in. And if not this Wednesday, then some Wednesday soon. Very Happy

Currently at 174.4 - 115 down.

Ha, glad someone else has had gains, however teeny, for the past 3 weeks. I have no bathroom scales, and my healthclub has closed down.. added to which I've been in France for 4 weeks, land of wonderful food.. having no means of weighing myself is good but I can feel waistline slippage. On the plus side, my upper arms don't hang in as many unsightly folds. So anyway, I've ordered an exercise bike. Anyone else do biking while watching the dumb tv shows you always secretly enjoyed but felt guilty about couchpotatoing with?

I did it!

Yes, putting it in writing helped.

So, you're hereby requested to whap me upside the head if I don't report that I've gone to the gym by 7:00 PM Wednesday!

Thank you.

(I won't keep doing this, don't worry... just need to get the routine re-established...)

Ugh!

I recall my mother telling me she gained a lot of weight in her 40s and 50s. She then spent the rest of her life trying to keep it in check. I'm beginning to feel like I'm living my mother's life.

Down five, up seven, down three, up four, down two, up five...

There's something wrong with this picture!
