On shoes, I don't remember if people have talked with you about that. Shoes matter..
They don't have to be the most expensive thing out there, but they should match your feet.
For example, I tend to like a certain New Balance or Nike Air Max for my particular weird feet.
Check this out.

Find out what shoe fits your foot best. Try several of them on in the best running shoe store around you. The sales people in chain stores often know from nothing, or worse.
Tell the folks in the good store you are starting to walk and jog and want to get the correct fitting shoes. Give them your list from Runners World (wherever) and let them find those or "equivalents". Don't go all shy, this is important.
If all the shoes are out of your price range, say you'll think about it, notice which ones felt right and try to reproduce that at lower cost at the mall. For example, I know I need good arch support and good cushioning, and my feet don't tend to pronate or supinate (flop one way or the other), and I need the ball of the foot area to be sort of wide.
I think Sozobe has another website besides runnersworld that is good for this too.
Don't be embarrassed about being a beginner, everybody begins.
