Heeven--

Some people need variety on a diet.

Some people benefit from monotony--"Ugh, chocolate eclairs again.

Either way, having low calorie food available is essential.

riverroad, how quickly does your instant rice cook? I'm wondering if a different quick cooking whole grain wouldn't be just as fast (probably not) or just as easy.

Finally! The scale budged. Two weeks, one super bowl party, and a bunch of trips to the club later I'm down one pound to 172. When I was doing the South Beach diet a few years ago and posting on the Prevention SB forums there was a thread for those trying to lose those last five pesky pounds. Some people were on it for months. Now I know why.

roverroad, I rummaged through my cupboard looking for quick-cooking whole grains that would be much better for you than instant rice. Have you ever heard on quinoa? It's a whole grain that is very filling, very tasty and cooks in 10 - 15 minutes. There are flavored mixes in the rice aisle that take a bit longer because they contain dehydrated veggies, but the plain is very good and can be thrown in the pan with your own veggie mix, protein and chicken broth instead of the instant rice you are currently using.

Alright,,, I'm back and I'm serious.

I am at 205 which is the heaviest I have been... ever.

I come with some reinforcements this time. I'm wearing a BoddyBugg (had it on for 2 days now) and so far so good. The gist of it is, it records and calculates every calorie you burn durning the day. Then you input all the food you eat during the day (this is kind of a pain in the butt but gets easier once you have common foods stored in the program). You have a minute by minute record of your activites and can see at the end of every day if you gained or lost weight that day.

The thing I have noticed is that I think I am eating good but when I see the calorie totals at the end of the day it is always higher than I thought it would be. Also, the arm band is a nice reminder to get up and move around throughout the day. My plan right now is to burn 2900 calories per day and eat 1900. A 1000 calorie deficit per day is around a 2 pound per week loss.

My goal is to get back down to 170.

My wife used it before and it really helped her. You can see everyday if you've been good or if you've been bad. It really helps hold yourself accountable. I feel guilty if I take the elevator when I know I should take the stairs... the bodybugg will know Evil or Very Mad

Oh... and FYI... I haven't found anything that burns more calories per minute than a nice extended roll in the hay with a loved one

J-B--

I'm a firm believer in thin-ends-of-wedges and a pound loss is sixteen ounces of wedge. Good on you.

jp--

I've heard of wearing your heart on your sleeve, but not necessarily your conscience.

Hold your dominion.

I'm coping with another round of severe anemia--don't have much energy to eat, but I don't have much energy to move, either.

Meanwhile, my snowdrops are coming up.

Well, I'm about 8 pounds lighter so far. Mostly water weight I'm sure. I haven't been drinking much water but I've been urinating like crazy. I think it's the diuretic in the bananas. I never used to eat those before.

Bummer is, I think my dieting triggered my gout attack! I haven't had a gout attack for almost a year and a half and suddenly I go on a diet, start eating all of the right things and exercising and I get a bad gout attack. It's kind of hard to exercise when you're on crutches. So the exercise will have to be put on hold for a few days. Hopefully that doesn't cause me to start gaining again. This old body just isn't as durable as it used to be. Rolling Eyes

On the other hand. Using crutches seems to be a good excercise work out too...

roverroad - avoid any products with artificial sweeteners - they're tremendous gout stimulants.

good news about your weight loss - water or fat lost is good. partly because it's encouraging at the beginning.

I'm still on the slow and steady weight loss plan. Just about 14 pounds down since December 31st. I've started walking a bit more - took the vcr downstairs where it's going to be hooked up to an old t.v., and I can pop in my old tae-bo tapes <as soon as I figure what to put on the cement floor down there to prevent knee/ankle joint pain>.

If you go to a carpet store they will sometimes give you those little sample squares for free. Then they probably will have a little bit of padding that they can give you too. Sometimes they have some really big rolls left over from installations that they will just throw out.

Congratulations on your weight loss. Man, it's so fun putting it on, but so miserable taking it off.

J_B. I haven't had my doctors appointment yet. I know I'm going against every bodies suggestion of seeing a doctor first. But I couldn't get an appointment until this Thursday and I wanted to get started. I feel a lot better. I haven't had any chest pains at all since I started eating better and my blood pressure has gone down about 10 points.

Gout isn't fatal, just frustrating. I can live with it... I don't know that a doctor could have prevented this attack since it was unexpected.
