ugh i think i am gaining weight!!! 172 today. i think i might cry.

i dont know that i feel better with lower bp. they said in the beginning that i would feel more sluggish because my bp and heart rate were lower. not sure that is happening, but i am really not noticing much difference. i do have "vivid" dreams which is supposedly a side effect of the beta blockers because the blood is flowing more freely up there... maybe i should start a thread on my dreams and record them each day. that would be funny Smile

i need to lose, lose lose. must get motivated!! help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dragon--

Very odd. I've abandoned beta blockers for the nonce because of the sluggishness and because of my fitful but dreamless sleep.

Very odd.

yeah last night was the first time i was actually fitfull. but then again i kept dreaming that a few people from a2k and i were hashing out 12,000 reasons for something. can't remember what it was.

the slugishness i haven't really felt. however, i have felt weaker. i can't actually finish the 2 mile run, i have to walk about 1/3 of it. but this am i was under 170 again. i think i must just really watch what i eat, that seems to be key at the present moment.

Beta blockers?
interesting..

I think I am going to throw my hat in this thread.
For the first time in my life I am addressing my weight issue and it sucks.
I have joined a local marathon wich in 6 months will be going around austin. Of course, Im only going to be in the walking catagory.. but that is more then my lazy behind has done in a LOOONG TIME...

Great, Shewolf! The first overture I ever made to weight loss was to begin a walking program. I lost about 3 lbs/month by walking 4 miles/day, 5 days/week without making any adjustments to my diet. Those days for me are long gone, but walking was all I needed for years.

dragon - interesting about the wild dreams. I sometimes have fitful sleep and wild dreams during the full moon. Maybe it will settle down as the week progresses.

I too am back in the 6s! Barely at 169.5, but I'll take it. I haven't walked since Saturday. I should get out there too.

Chiro appt yesterday went well. I'm almost pain free, but there are still a number of tender areas in my lower back. I go back again tomorrow and on Monday.

Dragon--

The beta blocker is the first medicine that I've ever decided to tussle with my doctor about. I'm fairly certain that my "normal" blood pressure is just fine--120/80--that the problem is that I can't control my anger and exasperation. This morning I've had readings ranging from 115/73 to 138/84.

Shewolf--

Welcome to the group. Your marathon plans--even walking--have me impressed. Can you get out in the evening--all by yourself--to train?

J_B--

169.99 would count as under 170.

There are roughly 220 calories in an ounce of fat. I find this a useful concept for constructive self-denial. Calories-in-a-pound, 3500, is a Big Number. Calories-in-an-ounce I can comprehend--and shun.

Down to 126 this morning--probably loss of water, but cheerful all the same.

JB-i am so glad you are almost pain free, there is nothing worse than a hurting back!!

shewolf, welcome and any thoughts you have, oh nurse, on beta blockers would be welcome.

noddy, i think the real issue for me was my bp was up around 170/110 and nothing i had done was lowering it. my cholesterol was fantastic so they said, my bad cholesterol was so low they called it regressive (i think) which meant it was actually working to decrease my overall cholesterol. so they said it had nothing to do with my eating or weight. tested for renal artery stenosis-dont have it. they said the only possible other explanation other than they just didnt have one was stress. but i find it hard to fathom that over the past three years i havent had a bp lower than the 170/110 if it was due to stress.

who knows, all i know is me and bernie will keep going even if it is a run/walk...i wanna look like catherine zeta jones...Smile

Noddy-

your BP from my side of the screen, looks fine.
I thinkyou may be right on the money with the idea of stress being your biggest blood pressure trigger.
Given some of the issues you carry around every day, Im actually surprised your resting BP isnt higher .

Beta blockers.. from what I have read lately and shared with you dragon.. frankly worry me?
They seem a bit extreme and in my opinion, better left for a last resort. But then again, I am no doctor.
When I got my degree in the early 90's beta blockers were no where in sight. At that time they were either still experimental, or not allowed in geriatric medicine.. Dont know wich.
Funny thing... ( this lets you know exactly HOW much i knew about beta blockers.. )
When you said your doctor had suggested them, The first thing on my mind was " Are those like the fat & Carb blockers? " And Can i have some??

Yes.
All by myself..( wow ) Im almost intimidated by that concept.. But that is one of my goals.
I have found something constructive, fun, and relaxing at the same time wich in the big scheme of things will allow me time to myself .
The training schedule is beginers ( me ) 30 minutes 2xs a week.
Im doing that on schedule. Off schedule, Im walking about an hour every other day . Sometimes the whole little 3 person family, later on.. just me at least once a week.

i think beta blockers were banned in athletic competition because they smooth everything out. i mean like the biathletes, it would help them keep their guns steady when they were shooting (and after however many mile cross country skiing, i would need it).

that was the extent i know about beta blockers. however, i have learned recently that they increase your insulin production making you hungrier more often for more food, not good in my case. they warn you if you gain more than 5lbs in one day, call your doc-not sure why. i seem heavier than before coming in at 172 this am.

these days i feel like nothing i do is making the fat go away. i am on birth control and now these fattening beta blockers? ugh...the running 2 miles in the am started doing less for me, plus the beta blockers make me weaker, and i can only run 4/5 of the 2 miles...have to stop and walk a little since my legs feel like they are going to give out. what to do what to do, any suggestions...doc said have to stay on them because otherwise my BP is in stroke range and that aint good.

bella have you felt any side effects on beta blockers? i really just have weakness, slight weight gain, and "vivid" dreams-not in a sexual way Sad more that they just seem real-oh and lower BP by a long shot...

ooh but look at the bright side...there is always a silver lining...they help with migranes so bella, if your headaches are migranes they should get better. oh and i reread some stuff...it just says that beta blockers often mask when insulin levels are low...the shaking etc...

I have no idea what I weigh right now.
Mr. Scale is out of whack and I haven't recalibrated him.

I came back from vacation five pounds heavier.
Within a week, I had lost the additional avoidupois.

This week has been bad for exercise.
Lots of unusual demands on my exercise time.
...and some bad dietary decisions...

Today I finally hit the roads for a four-mile jog.
Sunny and 75 degrees farenheit.
I feel renewed.

I just downloaded the application form for the Stoneham Town Day road
race. The race is September 10, giving me two weeks to get my groove
back. Maybe I can talk my son Nigel into running it with me.

Chai Tea--

Welcome.

If you're serious about weight loss, scales might be a very decorative addition to your almost-perfect bathroom.
