Gus, shave the beard! I think some of my accidental weight loss was due to a recent haircut.

Checking in: it's been about a month since I got really sick and tired of being fat. No. I mean really. I weighed about 232. I should be about 175. so alright, I started walking to work. Then I started to walk to work faster.
(I am nothing if not an incrementalist)

By the time we were ready to go on vacation I was walking about four miles a day. I put together a little upbeat music for my Muvo and headed out to the boardwalk on the first morning at the beach.

...
Background: for years in Tulsa, I ran the rivertrail three or four times a week, rode my bike a couple of hundred miles on a weekend and swam laps at the Y---- when we moved to city (NY) ten years ago I stopped doing all of that. Just stopped. My top weight about two years ago was 251.

---
The first morning on the boardwalk I am walking briskly when my brain said "Aren't you supposed to be running or jogging or freeplay skipping? What with the swivel hips walkathon?"

So I started to run. I have at present a strict rule: 1) I can only run as fast as I am able to sing along with music. No gasping.

--
So where I am now? Well, I ran on vacation and ate everything in sight so I gained about eight pounds in ten days.....

but since then (July 4) I have jogged some most days, when on long (5 miles) slogs on days off and had a day of rest every four days. So far

ten pounds off.

weight in this morning: 228.5

Joe(See PS)Nation

PS Tonight I ran from 23rd Street and the Hudson up the trail to the 79th Street Boat Basin, then over a couple of blocks to the 1/9 subway.

Checking in at 170.

I only put on a pound over my reunion weekend.
Dragon, you were right; the scales did surprise me.

Alas, won't be able to make the lunchtime soccer game today.

Littlek--

Misery loves misery.

Joe--

Very impressive. I've come to the conclusion that I've got to stop moving more. I've spent the summer on The Dreaded Plateau.

George--

Could it possibly be that you've reached that rarified state where you eat semi-sensibly automatically?

well, i am seeing the doc today. funny, my bp has this high for the past three years. according to my doc, i have been lucky. he said, you should start feeling much better once we get you on some medication. i thought, i haven't been feeling bad, hmmm? better - sweet!!!! if i haven't been feeling bad, then if i start feeling better, things should really start looking good.

does anyone know, the only thing i have been really struggling with is fatigue. is that a side effect of high blood pressure? i have decided to walk until my bp is normal, stinks because i kinda enjoy the run, walking doesn't get my heart rate up but according to doc, i shouldn't be doing that with such high bp. (yeah, i will finally divulge my bp...170/120). that is a little scary i guess.

still 169, but maybe with a normal bp i can lose faster!!!!! and stop sleeping 10-12 hours a night (i always thought there was something wrong with that).

Sleeping more than ten hours on a regular basis is not "normal". You're either super-fatigued for some physical reason or you're depressed.

Just being awake for 16 hours (instead of 12 or 14) would mean that you'd burn 200-400 more calories a day.

Listen to your doctor about the running. Chubby headline writers love people who are hauled to the ER--or the morgue--after running at high speed.

Dragon, I too am glad to see that you're getting some intervention for your bp.

Good job to everyone who lost over the past week and to the travellers who didn't gain (much).

I stepped on the scale yesterday at 171.5. Not bad after eating three great meals every day for 9 days. We were meeting on a college campus in Beloit, WI. We didn't have food like this when I was in school! The choices, quality, and quantity were amazing.

Yesterday was not such a great day. I was exhausted after being in a total immersion environment with 32 other people and no other outside contact. We met for breakfast at 7:00 am and worked until 10:00 pm. We had a two-hour break after lunch to do our homework but it wasn't enough time. We were all typically running on 4 or 5 hours sleep each night. By 4:00 yesterday afternoon I would have killed for a nap. I should have listened to my body and gone to sleep. Instead I hit the cupboards and had a food fest.

172.5 today with a good night's sleep under my belt and a renewed sense of recovery.

J-B--

College all over again--but with a mature metabolism. Youth is wasted on the young.

That overnight pound will melt just as quickly as it arrived--provided you don't give the stored calories any company.

I've pegged my month of malaise down to a bladder infection and I'm hoping I can see my Internist this afternoon, before the weekend. Why do I always recognize bladder infections on a Friday?

i asked my doc about the sleeping, he said it was unrelated to the bp and that some people just require more sleep. i was severly depressed in college and was sleeping close to 18 hours a day so i know what that would feel like and i am no where close (thank god).

he put me on a drug called sular, which incidentally one of the side effects is sore throat and runny nose (nice, had both of those this morning). however, since i swear the increased blood flow has increased my peeing amount by a gazillion times, i was 168 this morning on the scale!

i did get a call from the vet yesterday saying bernie had to have surgery today, but all is good, he is out of surgery and recovering, just waiting for mommy to pick him up. he had a growth between his tail and hip bone that was getting bigger and bigger and biopsy showed nothing. they thought it best to remove since it would one day impede his ability to walk. so no running for bernie for at least a week i think they said, he can however walk the 2 miles in the am so we will have to do that.

noddy, ugh, there is nothing worse than bladder infections. i hate anything in fact that goes wrong with your renal/urinary system. no matter what it is, you always end up with that endless feeling of having to pee (i hate that). hope you get to your internist because that stinks!

JB, that's pretty good for being gone that time and eating that heartily. i am impressed. i guess we both are fighting for that "6" in the middle. Smile

I'm back from my Internist with some lovely sulfa for my dear little bladder and the weekend will be a better place.

Now, if I can just gird up my loins for activity in this "Better Place".....

dragon--

Nice side effects.....

My best to Bernie. Will you bestow a tidbit of people food in my name?
