Dear all, thanks. I decided I better measure without clothes on for consistency and am really at 145. I didn't lose weight (fat or otherwise) - my clothes still fit the same way. But 145 is a more accurate weight for me to start with. I'd still like to lose the weight, but I'm not sure how high the desire is on the priorities list.

George, you should talk - you don't have much fat on your frame either - so far as I remember.

Ay - feeling healthy is definitely my prefered marker of success, even if that feeling better is of an emotional rather than psychological nature.

Hi lilk,

I am too afraid to go with the tape measure Razz
I know before I started this lil endeavour my arms looked really fat; now there is some muscle definition there and I am really happy with that.
I have started doing some abs combined with all my aerobic activity and am hoping to find my waste in amongst the layer of fat which conceals it Razz
So yea, I weigh 141.5 ish...sometimes more, sometimes less and I do wish I could weigh less (130-133) but I will not hold my breath getting there. I eat a pretty good vegetarian diet and excercise heaps so I reckon I am pretty healthy Smile

Welcome back to the bandwagon Smile

I think excersize is the key to my weight loss. I mean more than hauling buckets of dirt and mulch. I need to use my bicycle.

Alright...going out on a limb here and being truly brave!
George I forgot where you sent me about posting a pic so I have just added a Photo Album to my out dated webpage Wink

I hope to have an 'After" pic at the end of this lil adventure in which I will look somewhat leaner and more toned.

Yes, no excuses for me lilk! Tennis court ( I don't know how to play; I am a raquetball player from way back when) swimming pool, jacuzzi, gym, sauna all in our complex and the Brisbane River bikeway over the road!
I use all of the equipment available to me regularly...even the tennis courts to play catch with my 18 year old son.
We also have a soccer pitch nearby where my 21 year old son and I occasionally go to kick the ball around.
Given all of that, it should be a cinch to drop 5 pounds...but it just sticks to me like freakin super glue!

My mother is in motion 18 hours a day and she doesn't lose weight. I guess after 30 it's harder and harder.....

Wait to you get to 40 - I sometimes think I defy science. I can go all day landscaping, I keep up with two 20-something crew guys, eat about 1500 calories a day and the scale barely moves an ounce. I should weigh minus 35lbs. according to the scientific math. I also sometimes wear a pedometer and it is not unusual for me to walk between 15-20 miles a day in my business- a 5 acre plant nursery . I used to able to lose weight with minor effort, now it seems to take an act of God. It's just not fair <shakes fist at the sky>!

Ok off my daily routine, so I can at least not gain any weight.

Nice pics, Ay. Thanks for sharing. That pool looks mighty inviting.

I hear you on the post-40 blues. Even then I was able to make changes and see an effect. Not this year. I'm staring 50 in the face and the changes that used to take 10 lbs off in 6 weeks are totally ineffective and here I am 6 months out still sitting in the mid-170s. That's probably why the ideal weight charts bump up 5% after you hit 40. The chart-writing gods figure it's a losing battle and cut us some slack.

According to the charts my ideal weight for my height used to be 160 and is now 168. Normal used to be 146-176 and is now 151-185. That's all well and good for the chart writers but I look like death warmed over at 151 and I feel like two ton tessie at 185. A year ago I weighed 160, which is what I weighed in high school. Between mid October and mid January I jumped up 15lbs and I still have it. The worst part is where those 15lbs have taken up residence. In years past when I put on my 'winter coat' it would distribute throughout my body. This year it's all sitting on my midsection and seems to plan on staying there.

Our town pool opens today and I plan on swimming laps as often as I can get over there. It's not my normal exercise so I'm hoping it will jar my metabolism into gear and make a difference. Whatever happens this year I need to keep this struggle in mind as I head into next October and my urges to bulk up for the winter begin to send me to the snack cupboard. I have no intention of adding another 15lbs next winter.

Last night I actually knocked over some stuff off a table with my ass. I never really had much junk in the trunk, but I guess that is changing.

Although I'm with you J_B on the belly issue. The mid-life blubber seems to settle there and no amount of sit-ups can make it go away. I used to be a size 6 or 8 skirt or pants, but last winter I finally gave them all away knowing I am never going to be that size again. Well, maybe when I'm 80 - you never see really fat 80 year olds.

all well and good on the charts, but on my lil frame does not look so appealing Razz

I was at the back of the line in the height department and definitely got short changed!

Swimming...too bad I am not a swimmer. I do frequently hop into our unheated, ice cold pool though Wink

Good luck with your swimming regime J_B. And thanks for the post-40 pep talk Smile I am determined...just might take me a lil longer. I am going to start running 8kms weekly...out on the river walkway instead of on the treadmill; perhaps that will shake things up a wee bit ... literally Wink

Back from reunion--and had a wonderful time.

I certainly not among the thin and willowy members of the Class of '60, but I was definitely not in the well-upholstered group, either.

Metabolism past 30? Past 40? Past 50? Some of the most intelligent women I know agreed that after 60 weight loss is a heroic struggle.

Post weekend check-in.
Good news for a change: 171.

Where has all the metabolism gone?
Long time passes.

everyone, there is hope. my mom went from a size 12 at age 46 to currently a size 4-6 at age 58. her secret was not eating fabricated carbs (like pasta, bread, etc), but stuck with natural carbs like many veggies and potatoes. i think too having the kids out of the house (I went to college when she was 46) not eating up all her time helped her focus on herself more.

any thoughts on this- i have been told that since i was swimmer for 14 years (and competitive, training anywhere from 20-30 hours a week through college) that even though i have been inactive now for 8 years, that because my body is so used to swimming, doing it won't help me lose weight (hence my commitment to running with the pooch). i have also heard that running is the singular best way to lose weight since it is weight bearing. am i being told correctly?

Here's my take on it.
An inexperienced swimmer is going to use a lot of energy simply because
he is inefficient and wasting a lot of energy thrashing and splashing. A
good swimmer can go farther and faster with far less effort. But if you
are concerned about result from the exercise, then you will concentrate
on putting out a strong, consistent effort throughout the swim. That is
going to burn calories and build muscle. The best part is once you get
your swimming muscles back in shape, they will help you burn fat even at
rest. Further, if swimming is something you like to do, then you'll do it
more willingly and, circumstances permitting, more often.
