Tip of the Day: EAT CARBS

Carbohydrates are an excellent source of quick fast energy. In fact, when you are done working out, your body is CRAVING carbs to use for energy that you just burned working out. If it doesn't find the energy that your body is craving in tends to do the only logical thing... get rid of the muscle mass that is using all of that energy. Quite often the weight loss that people on Atkins see is muscle mass... not fat. Then when they get off of the atkins diet, they have even less fat burning potential then when they started... they are worse off then when they started.

This is just a small part of the health risks of depriving your body of carbohydrates. Some of the more serious are osteoporosis (both men and women), gout, increased risk of heart disease, kiddney damage, bad breath, muscle loss... and on and on and on.

That's true, jp!

However, it DOES matter WHAT KIND of carbs you eat. White sugar, white flour and stuff like that won't give you anything except a burst of energy. Better to eat fresh fruit, whole grains, etc. and get nutritional value in addition to energy.

(I'm a South Beach fan, BTW...and as of the last blood workup, all my numbers are perfect! Hooray!!!)

We have had a lot on TV about junk food, and how chickens are fed cement dust and their own excrement so that the meat will be cheap enough for the supermarkets... so I think as long as you eat good quality food, as unrefined as possible, and in reasonable quantities, stop worrying about the weight and BE FIT AND CHEERFUL! Supersize me was a lesson in how depression and unfitness comes from junk food.

In from the shops...had to ride into the city which I did not particularly enjoy. 15 km there and back and now going down to the gym to do a lil TM walk then a nice soak in the jacuzzi and a refreshing dip in the pool Smile

And yes, I was able to wear a size 7 skirt when I walked to the shops yesteday@!
Humph, perhaps my scale is outta whack? Anyway, I am just happy to be able to wear the 'other half' of my wardobe!

She should eat, but se may not have been up for all that long. Sometimes Dag's schedule gets wacky.

Today wasn't great food or excersize-wise.

I finally made it back to the morning run this am. Bernard hasn't been too pushy with the run, so I slacked last week under my cramming for my exam. Hubby shoved me out of the bed this morning (thank you for that!). Have been eating rather well however, still alot of chicken, lean pork, cottage cheese, veggies, and stuff like that. Gonna make a run for 170 by thursday's weigh in. only 2 lbs from where i have been now for the last week-ugh. however i am glad to hear everyone's clothes have been fitting better, maybe mine were just so small to begin with, they are now just sorta tight.

littlek, i love that pic.

So do you actually like running? I am not a huge fan of running but have learned to like it. My father ran the 100th running of the Boston Marathon and there purchased lil gold running shoe medallions which he gave to all his girls with the stipulation that one day we run our own marathon Razz I have been 'in training' ever since Wink
My goal is to run a 1/2 marathon by the end of this year and a full marathon by the end of next year. Going for the gold so to speak Smile
Good on ya for getting out there and running!
And I wish my husband would kick me outta bed...I have to drag him outta bed every morning Wink Well, lately I have been enticing him outta bed with cooked breakfasts...works wonders!

I forget to eat sometimes, too! When I remember I have a handful of nuts with a piece of fruit Smile
You sure are excited about this whole boxing thing... Smile Makes me want to go out and give it a try.
What kind of equipment does it require?

CG- welcome in the club! join the ranks of sweaty hungry us.

Sonte - not much. Trainer has gloves and head gear, all I had to get were wraps for hands ($6) and a mouthpiece ($2). I also got a jumping rope, but usually they have those as well. It IS awesome. Today we did 'the ropes' again - coach stretches cords at shoulder height from one side of the room to another and you have to duck under them with weights or medicine ball. five rounds, three minutes each. then you punch with weights, again five or so rounds, then jump rope, punch speed bag and heavy bag and then fool around with somebody pretending like you know what the hell you're doing.

i also biked there and back -cambridge to JP, decent 50 mins or so of hammering. feeling brand new!

Boxing sounds like a good workout...I will look into it when I move back to Canada.
I am looking for something to do other than running and bike riding.

Constitutional Girl--

Extra protein, fine. Extra calories, no.

If you eat more meat/cheese/fish this week eat less of something else.

By the way the idea that women risk anemia with every period has been disproved. We're built to bleed on a regular basis.

littlek--yes your boxer is so cute! i love it when they look at you with that quizzical look.

ay s-i used to hate running because it was so hard. it has gotten better and now it only takes me 20 minutes to go a mere 2 miles. better than the 30 it took me when i started. i actually enjoy it more now because we moved into a quieter neighborhood with large established trees and beautiful yards. My pooch loves it too because he gets to annoy all the dogs with those electric fences (they run along the yard barking at him and he so defiantly pees on a bush in front of them).

my one problem is actually making it out of bed. i love to sleep. if i could get 12 hours a day i would love it. once i get out there i am fine, it is just getting there that is hard for me. and when i say hubby kicked me out of bed i mean literally, he stuck his foot on my back and shoved me!!! guess its what i needed, a swift kick in the rear. didn't make it this am though, Bernard hasnt been too pushy about it (wondering if he is ok). i will be trying hard tomorrow!!!
