The Real Meaning of the Cindy Sheehan Vigils
Yes, the protesters oppose the war in Iraq. But they opposed war in Afghanistan, too.

Birmingham, Alabama ?- Jim Douglass is against war, period. As a young Catholic activist in the 1960s and 1970s he protested the war in Vietnam, once organizing a "resistance Mass" at the University of Notre Dame in which, according to an account in The National Catholic Reporter, he and a few other men "ripped up draft cards and placed them in the chalice as part of the presentation of the gifts."

In the 1980s, Douglass moved to the Seattle area, leading protests at the U.S. Navy's Trident submarine base. When he and his wife Shelley found a house close to the railroad tracks that led into the base, they chose to live there, amid the rumbling and the noise, so they could protest as so-called "white trains" brought nuclear warheads to the subs.

Douglass founded an organization called the Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action, and for years he was a leader in anti-Trident demonstrations. But then, in 1989, after a Trident base opened in Kings Bay, Georgia, Douglass left the Pacific Northwest. He found another house hard by the railroad tracks ?- this one in Birmingham, Alabama, along a route that weapons traveled on the way to Kings Bay. There, in Birmingham, he became involved in a variety of causes but continued to protest the Trident program, which he once wrote "seemed to epitomize all the violence of our society."

In 1991, Douglass headed to Iraq, just after the end of the Gulf War. As part of the Catholic peace organization Pax Christi, he went three more times in the 1990s, opposing the sanctions imposed on Iraq by the United Nations. In 2001, he protested against the war in Afghanistan. And in 2003, he fasted in St. Peter's Square before heading back to Iraq with a "Christian peacemakers team" to be in Baghdad during the "shock and awe" attack. After each protest, he returned to Birmingham.

And it was there, on the city's south side, by a fountain in the Five Points neighborhood, that Douglass stood Wednesday night, a candle in his hand, in yet another antiwar vigil, this one in support of Cindy Sheehan, the woman who is protesting outside President Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas. For Douglass, it was routine; he has organized hundreds of vigils in Birmingham. He used to hold them once a month, but ever since the September 11 terrorist attacks, he has been holding them twice each week ?- Wednesdays at noon and Saturdays at 5 P.M. "We felt the urgency of peace and justice work because of the attacks on 9/11," he explained Wednesday night. "I personally oppose all war."

The Sheehan vigil, officially sponsored by MoveOn.org, along with the liberal groups TrueMajority and Democracy for America, was part of a nationwide series of protests Wednesday night. According to MoveOn, there were 1,627 such meetings, with a total attendance of at least 50,000 people. The Birmingham crowd ?- in the heart of one of the nation's reddest states, where George W. Bush defeated John Kerry 63 percent to 37 percent last year ?- was significantly larger than the attendance at Douglass' usual vigils. Although 50 people had signed up to come, it appeared that the crowd actually numbered between 60 and 75.

On its website, MoveOn offered protesters what amounted to a pre-fab vigil kit, including talking points, a "sample media advisory," and pre-designed signs ?- placards that read MOMS FOR PEACE and MEET WITH CINDY and, apparently for pet lovers, DOGS FOR CINDY. But the Birmingham protest appeared a bit more homegrown. People carried signs that said WE ARE ALL SISTERS AND BROTHERS: LOVE YOUR ENEMIES. And as they stood around ?- there were no speeches ?- they expressed opposition not just to the controversial war in Iraq, but also to the war in Afghanistan, which polls indicate was overwhelmingly supported by the American people.

Several felt that in the days after September 11, the United States went too far by attacking Afghanistan. "It was the Taliban and Osama bin Laden," said one woman. "So why didn't we just go after him? Why did we attack the whole country?"

"I didn't like us doing that," said another woman.

"I'm opposed to war generally," added a third woman. "I believe that both of those wars [Afghanistan and Iraq], but Iraq especially, are wrong."

Their statements echoed the words of Cindy Sheehan herself, who on Monday was asked by MSNBC's Chris Matthews, "If your son had been killed in Afghanistan, would you have a different feeling?" Sheehan answered, "I don't think so, Chris, because I believe that Afghanistan is almost the same thing."

"But Afghanistan was harboring the Taliban, was harboring al Qaeda, which is the group that attacked us on 9/11," Matthews said.

"Well, then we should have gone after al Qaeda and maybe not the country of Afghanistan," Sheehan said.

Sheehan's words, in turn, echoed statements made by the leaders of MoveOn opposing the war in Afghanistan. What that suggests is that the vigils across the country last night were only partly about the war in Iraq. Yes, that is the focus of the protesters' passions today. And yes, they support Cindy Sheehan. But the antiwar movement is also about opposition to the very foundation of the war on terror ?- the war in Afghanistan and the U.S. response to the 9/11 attacks. Last night, the signs and the slogans were about Cindy Sheehan. But the protest was about much more than that.

This guy, Byron York, is really confused - like most of the Americans that support this war. The war in Afghanistan should have been won and over by now, but this administration more or less abandoned the search for Osama and put 99 percent of our efforts into Iraq - a country that had no WMDs or military to defend against the US military might. This administration thought the war in Iraq would be over in short order, but we now find ourselves in a quagmire that was exacerbated by the incompetence of this administration. This administration failed everybody in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Yes, Mrs Sheehan has every right to demonstrate against the war - in both Iraq and Afghanistan. She lost her son. What did Byron York sacrifice for this country? His lip service doesn't count for beans.

sorry tico, i just find it hard to take anything seriously when it comes from drudge or some guy that writes a book called "the vast left wing conspiracy".

that aside, the one guy, seems to have simply been acting according to his faith. he believes that killing is wrong. which is, of course, in line with the ten commandments. he's speaking out in favor of a culture of life.

tico, why are you attacking people of faith ? Laughing

seriously, what's wrong with a person being against all killing and saying so ? please don't say the war on terror, yada, yada, yada. for people of faith, there is a higher authority that goes beyond simple geo-politics.

Cindy Sheehan: Foul-mouthed Traitor
Posted by Rocco DiPippo @ Wednesday 17 August 2005, 11:26 pm

Day by day, hour by hour and now, minute by minute, the MSM construct of Cindy Sheehan as patriotic victim of Bush's war crumbles into dust.

Rising in its place is the America-hating, unpatriotic, fame-intoxicated adolescent that Sheehan has, by her own words, revealed herself to be.

Now, Drudge is reporting that Sheehan went "postal" during a rally last year at San Francisco State University: "We are not waging a war on terror in this country. We're waging a war of terror. The biggest terrorist in the world is George W. Bush!," screeched Cindy to a crowd of hate-intoxicated leftists.
It gets worse- during the rally Sheehan also delivered an obscenity-laced rant aimed at the Bush Administration: "They're a bunch of ******* hypocrites! And we need to, we just need to rise up… If George Bush believes his rhetoric and his bullshit, that this is a war for freedom and democracy, that he is spreading freedom and democracy, does he think every person he kills makes Iraq more free?…The whole world is damaged. Our humanity is damaged. If he thinks that it's so important for Iraq to have a U.S.-imposed sense of freedom and democracy, then he needs to sign up his two little party-animal girls. They need to go to this war."

Five minutes after reading Sheehan's latest imbecilic utterances, I hopped into my car to run a quick errand. Upon flipping on the ignition I was greeted by the insane ranting of Air America talk host Mike Malloy who was referring to Bush as a murdering thug. Now Mike does have the coolest hair of anyone from George Washington's generation but as Cindy Sheehan might say, he obviously has complete **** for brains.

Until recently, I found it mildly entertaining to watch the symbiotic, bordering on parasitic, relationship between Cindy Sheehan and her rump-swabs in the MSM and radical- left alternative media. Now, as Sheehan single-handedly shreds the MSM-erected shroud of false piety and unctious sanctimony that once enveloped her in bathos, what was once mildly entertaining has, for me, become positively sickening to watch.

How dare Sheehan spit on the leader of my country in this time of war? How dare she and Mike Malloy and the rest of the far-Left give hope and strength to Islamist thugs who, if given the chance, would slit their throats and would not hesitate to slit mine and my family's?
Play-time with America-hating lefties is over. These creeps are endangering us all. This country can't afford to indulge them any longer.

My sentiments exactly! Write on, Rocco! I'm sick and tired of hearing all those American-hating, freedom-despising moonbat liberals put down one of the bravest and most resolute leaders our country has had in a long time (a close tie with Reagan).

And I'm so glad that President Bush is a grown-up and is more concerned with doing a good job for the American people and our National Security than his popularity.

thank you for your attention.

So whats your solution? Work camps/Mass deportations/Internment without trial?… maybe convert one of those treacherous blue states into a Gitmo 2 for liberal traitors?

Ralph and Beth are right. The gloves need to come off. Anyone who impinges on the honour of our leader and offers succour to our subhuman enemies in this time of crisis should be crushed without mercy.

I love what Rush Limbaugh called the terrorists the other day on his show: an endless parade of human debris.

Now these guys should be the target of hatred and derision, not President Bush and our troops, who are only doing their job ?- defending our country against outside enemies.

How do these anti-war moonbats want it? Fought over there or over here.

Isn't it funny that the left accuses people of fashioning solutions that only they would implement? The draft ?- proposed by Democrats. FDR, a Democrat - Japense interment. Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot ?- gulags and death camps. Someone will bring up Hitler (a small-time player when compared to Stalin & crew), but remember that he was a National Socialist. The left always accuses people of wanting to do what they would do themselves. It's so predictable.

An excellent post, Rocco. It's time for the treason laws to get new life and to arrest folks or deport them. Another idea is "voluntary deportation". You go and find someone who hates America as much as Cindy Sheehan does and give her a one-way ticket to whatever country she thinks is better, with the condition that in so doing, she gives up her U.S. citizenship.

Oh, there's a third possibility, HeHateMe ?- perhaps Rocco views responding to you as unnecessary due to the skillful thrashing visited upon you by the other posters to the Harry Belafonte topic. Smile Just a thought for your consideration.

Quote:
Who speaks for Casey Sheehan?

By David Gelernter

This nation respects and admires Cindy Sheehan on account of her son's heroic death in Iraq. But the Cindy Sheehan spectacle has been another thing altogether. It's on hold now; perhaps it's over. But the protest echoes.

It's tragic that we don't seem to remember President Lincoln's words at Gettysburg, and Sheehan and her supporters don't either: "The world will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here." In the shadow of heroic deeds, words don't count for much. The Gettysburg Address is one of the rare exceptions.

Casey Sheehan's deeds were heroic. By laying down his life for this nation, he delivered the kind of message that is written in blood, that lives forever. Why on Earth would a loving mother choose to refocus the nation's attention onto her words and away from his deeds?

And what was Casey Sheehan's message? It had nothing to do with President Bush. It didn't even have to do with the war, necessarily. It said something much simpler: "I love my country."

His mother seemed intent on drowning out that message. At times she contradicted it. Some news stories about the mother's protest didn't even mention the son's name. In most, he passed through like a butterfly that is gone before you really see it. "Spc. Casey Sheehan, who was killed in an ambush in Baghdad last year…. " That's all you got; then it was right back to Cindy Sheehan's latest pronouncements.

The real story is brief enough. Casey Sheehan enlisted in the Army in 2000 at age 20. The country was at peace. When he was asked to reenlist four years later, he knew that he would probably be sent to Iraq. He reenlisted anyway. In March 2004, he was sent to Iraq as a mechanic attached to the artillery division of the 1st Cavalry Division. When a convoy was attacked in Sadr City a month later, he volunteered to join the rescue mission ?- although he had no obligation to take part in combat. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

Did he intend to say, "I love my country?" Or was he tricked into saying it? He volunteered to reenlist with the war underway ?- as an experienced young man, not a teenager. Then he volunteered again, for a dangerous mission above and beyond the call of duty. And one thing more, from his sister, Carly: "That's all he wanted to do was serve G-d and his country his whole life." (He was a devout Roman Catholic.) What message emerges? What it sounds like to me is: "I devote my life lovingly to my country and my G-d."

And his mother's message? The FrontPage website noted her comments to a reporter. "The biggest terrorist is George W. Bush." And: "We are waging nuclear war in Iraq, we have contaminated the entire country." And most important: "America has been killing people on this continent since it started. This country is not worth dying for."

I'd love to know what Casey Sheehan thought about this nation on the day he died. The evidence suggests that he would not have agreed with his mother's violently anti-American ideas. But we'll never know for sure.

Yet it's not too late to hear from other Casey Sheehans ?- from our soldiers in Iraq, any one of whom might volunteer for a dangerous mission tomorrow. Why don't some of the reporters who spent weeks hanging on Cindy Sheehan's every word tell us what our soldiers are thinking?

Cindy versus Casey Sheehan has posed a stark choice ?- a choice this nation will remember long after the Texas vigil: "This country is not worth dying for" versus "all he wanted to do was serve G-d and his country." Where do our soldiers stand? They have as much right to be heard as Cindy Sheehan.

As for her, she wasn't content with addressing the country; she insisted on addressing the president. But his duty is to act on behalf of the nation, to thank her and console her, not to attend lectures on America's sin. He did meet her, and no doubt he spoke to her in the vein of Lincoln in his famous letter to Mrs. Lydia Bixby, who lost two sons in the Civil War. "I pray that our heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom."

The news media have done Cindy Sheehan no favor. They only let a grief-stricken mother embarrass herself; it has been painful to watch. It's past time to shift the spotlight back to her brave son and his surviving comrades, where it has always belonged.

Cindy Sheehan Unplugged
By Jane Shahi
FrontPageMagazine.com | August 19, 2005

The following is a transcript of comments made by featured speakers -- including Cindy Sheehan -- at a rally to honor Lynne Stewart, a radical leftist lawyer convicted of helping the perpetrator of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, communicate with terrorist cells in his home country. This rally took place on Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at San Francisco State University and was recorded by FrontPage Magazine reporter Jane Shahi. Among the sponsors of the event were the National Lawyers Guild, Campaign to End the Death Penalty, the International Socialist Organization, and the Campus Antiwar Network. With Mrs. Sheehan's newfound popularity, we felt her remarks were most revealing. -- The Editors.

What if those are her own words, Chrissee? Does that change your opinion of her?
