@roger,
You can still wear one, though. I plan to if I'm ever in a crowd.

I still wear one. If I were the only one left with a mask on it wouldn't change me.

Incidentally, when I caught the virus it somehow slipped through the precautions. My wife often skips wearing a mask but she appears to have got it from me. I give up figuring it out.

This may amuse you. America and Britain use different brand names for sticky tape. Americans call it Scotch tape we call it sellotape even if the brand we are using is scotch tape.

So far so so so,

In Brazil they call it durex.

@izzythepush,
What do you call Kleenex? The stuff you blow your nose with?

@Mame,
Depends on the paper and who you're talking to, kleenex is used but mostly we would say tissue or a paper hanky. Bog roll and **** tickets are terms used for the other end.

Hard to believe stories pop up on news sites regularly. Just left a story of a man upset at McDonald's drive-thru handing his four year old son a gun, telling him to shoot the approaching officer. The officer received a bullet graze to the arm when he swatted the gun aside.

I just watched a video of a beached shark getting rescued. As I watched I recalled a Ltjg when I was at sea in the early 60s. He kept a high powered rifle at hand and used it when he spotted any sharks. His looks might remind one of Charles Laughton as Captain Bligh in Mutiny on the Bounty. I had no respect for him. One funny story about him is the time he came out on the pier in his VW Beatle, three sheets to the wind. Maybe four. When he reached the pier's end he kept driving. But they were duty bound to rescue him, dammit.

A previously unpublished novel by Leonard Cohen is due for publication this autumn.

Written in Montreal in 1956 – the year Cohen published his first poetry collection – A Ballet of Lepers focuses on “toxic relationships and the lengths one will go to maintain them”, according to a press release.

As detailed in the Cohen biography Various Positions by Ira B Nadel, the 91-page book “tells the story of a 35-year-old sales clerk who takes in his elderly grandfather” to live together in a cramped boarding house … The grandfather is given to fits of violence, and the narrator (who remains unnamed) finds an awakening violence within himself.”

It opens with the lines: “My grandfather came to live with me. There was nowhere else for him to go. What had happened to all his children? Death, decay, exile – I hardly know.”

The novel demonstrated “a growing sense of Jewish history and tragedy”, wrote Nadel, a theme that would develop in Cohen’s subsequent poetry, and reflected the “difficulties that Cohen faced with his own senile grandfather, although without the degree of violence”.

The book was originally rejected by two publishers. Cohen, who died in 2016, once said that A Ballet of Lepers was “probably a better novel” than his celebrated first novel, The Favourite Game, published in 1963.

The new publication of the novel will be accompanied by 15 short stories and the script for a radio play from Cohen’s archives, all written between 1956 and 1961, and titled A Ballet of Lepers: A Novel and Stories.

We ate chicken in a local place last week at this time. They played music - a never-ending piece that to me equals the hip-hop version of elevator music. Drove me mad. I hope the workers went berserk and destroyed the sound system after we left.

@edgarblythe,
We were in a local AppleBee's a few years ago and they had a two member singing group that sang some awful lumpy version that was half folk, half slow disco and fibers of some dismal thing I can't identify. We decided to pack up the rest of our dinner and get out because the music was a terrible distraction. On our way out, we were stopped by the man in the next booth who said "Oh dear God, is this what has happened to music?" so we had a few happy minutes complaining about how dismal the tunes were before we left. By the way, the woman singing had a beautiful voice, it was the tune that was awful.

I love some of what others consider pretty awful music, so you know it's bad if I can't take it.

Just saw a weight-loss ad. "Your pants will no longer fit you." That's no good. I've got to wear pants. Which reminds me of a water hose ad. "This is the last water hose you will ever buy." I don't take kindly to threats like that.
