The percentage of gays in the entertainment arena must greatly exceed the percentage of the general populace and yet the former had, and continues to, struggle so greatly to deny this fact.

If you were someone who actually thought Gomer Pyle was an amusing character or that Jim Nabor's baritone was lovely, why the hell would you care if he was a queer?

He was, at best, a minor talent, but this had nothing to do with his sexual orientation.

So much unfortunate bullshit around sexuality, and this goes for the GLT (if that's the correct acronym) clowns as well as the homophobes.

@Finn dAbuzz,
Yeah really. I mean, who cares if Kathy Griffin is gay?

@Finn dAbuzz,
Another example is Anderson. CNN's rating was going down, so he had to announce publicly that he's gay to milk the ratings or possibly get his contract renewed. It was a ratings ploy nevertheless.

Well, he wasn't a Jew. Gay? I don't know. But so what if he was?

I figure that as gay marriage becomes more commonplace, folks will likely pay less attention to lists of who is gay. Maybe not.

@chai2,
Was I talking about Jim?
I was responding to Finn's comment around the bullshit moves around the GLT arena. I wonder what's CNN's next move to crank up their ratings when the ratings plummet? It's probably Piers Morgan coming out and announcing he's a liberal.

@farmerman,
Farmerman, Well, actually, I didn't know about Jim Nabors or Merv either, for that matter. It is interesting to find these things out after years of our parent's idealization of actors they assumed they knew. Here I am, after my mother's death several years ago, learning that her idea of the man was nothing more than her own fantasy, encouraged as it was by his public behavior and the impression he left. It's a lesson for us all, I think. How much do we really know about our heros? How much do we really know about each other? We're fortunate if we learn about our intimate friends. But it helps to ask and look beyond the surface. If we want to know, that is.

Jim Nabors was a very funny man and talented. That I know.
