@izzythepush,
Dickens is for me an exception. I love all his characters, even ghosts.

@edgarblythe,
I have for some reason always liked that stuff. In the Nam, if we got a real old case of C-Rations, we could get a meal that had something similar to Corned Beef. It may have even been called that.

When we got these cases I would see how many I could get a hold of. A lot of people couldn't stand the stuff. It would keep you regular, I will assure you of that! I had a buddy who got a bit stuck, I suggest he try a can and he was unplugged in a couple of hours.

@BillW,
When I worked at Schrafts in NYC, I had to send off corned beef briskets to restaurants. Once I dropped a big one on the floor. As I was about to put it aside the supervisor put it on the order, saying, "If we don't send it out they will serve it to us in the cafeteria."

I don't like corned beef on its own.

I do like a corned beef hash though.

@izzythepush,
For me, corned beef is a tricky thing. I like it in some settings and can't eat it in others. In hash it's usually pretty good.

@edgarblythe,
I like my hash but I spend the rest of the evening tasting it again every time I burp.

For Vocal's White Owl contest I wrote a few words concerning a shameful episode from my past but ultimately decided against it as I didn't want to break anybody's heart.

When I was around eighteen or so I spent a few weeks hanging with another nineteen year old that I had known for several years. I don't think he would have chosen me as a pal, but there was nobody else in that part of the country. One day he took a single shot 22 rifle and we were roaming the woods. I didn't object to the gun because we had been supplementing our diet with game. We happened across an owl. White owls are an extreme rarity in the hill country, a near impossibility it would seem. My friend pointed the gun and shot the owl. It's self defense action was to puff itself up and charge forth. It was a beautiful white color. I was bigger and stronger than this guy but I lacked the character to stop him from killing the owl. I have searched owl pictures and the only one that looks like that is the
snowy owl. I will never get that bird out of my mind.

@edgarblythe,
I don't blame you. Owls are a protected species and don't interfere or harm humans at at all. Let it go, though. You didn't kill it and it might have died the next week from another predator.

In the middle of an argument with my wife, she said I'm right.

What the hell do I do next?

@Mame,
WhenI was a student I hit a barn owl in the car. I had no choice, it came straight at me.

I still feel guilty about it.

Barn owls have been accused of ghost sightings, their white faces swooping down silently look spectral in the moonlight.

@izzythepush,
One time I was driving into town when a dog on the side of the road suddenly ran under my pick up truck. As I was coming to a stop I could tell it was tumbling along beneath me. Miraculously it was only scraped and bruised a bit. It ran home on all four legs. Next day driving by the same house the dog owner was in the yard restraining the same dog. Why he didn't either build a fence or keep it in the house is a mystery to me.

@edgarblythe,
The other day there was a beautiful Staffordshire Bull Terrier standing outside the supermarket, no lead, nothing.

At first I thought he was a statue.

He was still standing there when I came out, he had moved slightly closer to the door up that was it so I told him he was a good dog.
