Was there anyone from the US Political sphere that did the honorable thing and resigned over this matter, in order to allow them to speak out against their leader?

Thank you for posting that, Lordofthedance, i found it profoundly moving, not the least of the reasons for which is that such candor and honorable behavior constitute one of the exceptions which proves the rule of political venality.

Cheers, Boss . . .

All too typically, this did not make any news "splash" here, and it missed it altogether . . . it is comforting, though, to know that some few
Americans are willing to value honor over career.

I just found the link for John Brady and posted it above.

Very good letter to Colin Powell.

Many have said they'd move out of the US over some various issue they have had with the Bush administration. Sadly, very few have followed through with their promises.

And thank you for that, Lordofthepertinent . . .

I was particularly struck by this passage:

John Brady Kiesling wrote:
The policies we are now asked to advance are incompatible not only with American values but also with American interests. Our fervent pursuit of war with Iraq is driving us to squander the international legitimacy that has been America's most potent weapon of both offense and defense since the days of Woodrow Wilson. We have begun to dismantle the largest and most effective web of international relationships the world has ever known. Our current course will bring instability and danger, not security.

I'm sure there are many leftists in the State Department who share his views. One would hope they'd quit as well.

(Edited to correct Setanta's typo for him)

What do you mean Tico....a sort of voluntary idealogical cleansing, perchance?

America will balance out in the end.

I just hope that not too much damage is done in the meantime.

Lord E

Yes, Keisling's resignation letter did get a fair bit of press but like Cook he was swimming upstream against huge forces. Thanks kindly for the Cook piece, I fell in love with the unhandsome fellow at the time.

Can anyone find a definitive source for what Galloway is supposed to have said about Iraqis fighting to resist the invasion?

The following link leads to an excellent analysis of the events leading up to the war as revealed by various accounts and by the Downing Street memo.

It will disappear soon behind the 'pay for' wall, so unless you have an account with the NYRB (which you should have anyway), save it to your hard drive or on paper.

Blatham's link is indeed interesting but when I read it I found NO ACCOUNT of the votes in the US Senate and the House of Representatives which gave President Bush to auhority to go to war with Iraq.

One can only wonder at the mystifying power wielded by a man who the left thinks is quite inadequate. Just how was he able to convince a large majority of the House and Senate to grant him authority to go to war? Certainly, the Senate and House Intelligence committees had information about Iraq and WMD's.
