One of the basic functions of government IS economic control, whether that's a democracy, dictatorships and even communism. It's just the degree of how the "people" are represented is changed. Besides, if you wanna to talk about how a government "lies" just look at Trump.

Did anyone else watch the speech?

I think the National Emergency will happen, it didn't happen tonight. Trump basically said nothing new... it was the same pitch awkwardly delivered.

Nothing happened tonight.... there is only one card left for Trump to play.

If a National Emergency doesn't happen by the end of next week (let's say January 18th) I will be surprised. I don't think Trump can walk away from this one. I don't see how else this ends... and it can't go on for very much longer.

Well, the element of surprise is gone. Declaring a National Emergency now hurts him more than it help. Briefs for Court were already ready to go, just waiting for the trigger. Trump boxed himself in more now than ever.

McConnell has dug in, not that it means much. He's got a year and knows seeking re-election will be too tough to overcome. This is his last stand too. They'll both sink.

The funny thing about Mitch is that he never seems fully in support of Trump's wall. I think he, like most GOPers, hoped the old campaign ruse - one that many Trump supporters didn't even take seriously, would just go away.
