A cute message on the answering machine from Anastasia, calling from her new place - telling me how she "saw another rainbow" from her window, and how all the kids from the Turkish lady she's renting her upstairs room from came running up to look at it ..

heehee, I just wish I could do the scene justice. My skill at writing is lacking just enough to not completely convey the whole thing. Too bad I didn't have a video camera on me.

littlek, I think anyone who has had kids or who has spent lots of time with them will know exactly how the hands looked and how the voice sounded, as well as the look of patient knowledge that the grown up just simply doesn't get it.
These are the moments that are priceless.

My neighbour, Peggy, on seeing my hair today: " and what do you call that? "

"Thanks, it's my tribute to autumn."

I Enjoy Being a Girl

I'm a girl, and by me that's only great!
I am proud that my silhouette is curvy,
That I walk with a sweet and girlish gait
With my hips kind of swivelly and swervy.

I adore being dressed in something frilly
When my date comes to get me at my place.
Out I go with my Joe or John or Billy,
Like a filly who is ready for the race!

When I have a brand new hairdo
With my eyelashes all in curl,
I float as the clouds on air do,
I enjoy being a girl!

When men say I'm cute and funny
And my teeth aren't teeth, but pearl,
I just lap it up like honey
I enjoy being a girl!

I flip when a fellow sends me flowers,
I drool over dresses made of lace,
I talk on the telephone for hours
With a pound and a half of cream upon my face!

I'm strictly a female female
And my future I hope will be
In the home of a brave and free male
Who'll enjoy being a guy having a girl... like... me.

When men say I'm sweet as candy
As around in a dance we whirl,
It goes to my head like brandy,
I enjoy being a girl!

When someone with eyes that smoulder
Says he loves ev'ry silken curl
That falls on my iv'ry shoulder,
I enjoy being a girl!

When I hear the compliment'ry whistle
That greets my bikini by the sea,
I turn and I glower and I bristle,
But I happy to know the whistle's meant for me!

I'm strictly a female female
And my future I hope will be
In the home of a brave and free male
Who'll enjoy being a guy having a girl... like... me.

Note: "geld" = Dutch for "money".

After a few unfortunate violent incidents that caused much sorrow and a range of commemorative "silent marches", the issue of "senseless violence" - in Dutch: "zinloos geweld" - became quite the topic the last few years. It came to where no politician could neglect to refer to those random young people who were kicked to death or shot by some drunk agressor they'd never seen before.

A big public campaign started, too: "Stop zinloos geweld!" and I must admit, after an extent of equally senseless symblic actions (I mean, what good does a tile on the trainstation platform pavement with a ladybug, the symbol of the stop-senseless-violence movement, do exactly?), it became a bit of a bore. Enough already.

Two days ago, when I got my change in some shop, I noticed a little sticker exactly the size of the coin on the back of one Euro. I looked to see what it said: "Stop zinloos geld!".

That made me grin.
