Oh, dear, the BAR is in a grumpy mood tonight. A B&B wanted to paint the buildings in shades of blue. The response was "a hulking blueberry on South Street."
And then they decided to force a church to rip out stairs and a porch that were built in the historic district without BAR approval.

Sometimes the boards are dead on and sometimes not only weird but getting into property rights, and sometimes they're misbegotten. Tis a trial for all who follow them.

Next up was a 40 minute discussion of awnings hanging from the fronts of buildings and whether they could have text on the the sides. Denied.

My architect is now on stage involved in another project.

It was a draw on that one. The board was unhappy about an aspect of his nine story building. The vote would have been 4-3 against him, but they negortiated a deferral to redesign a portion of the project.

Bill, my architect, kind of looks and acts like Andy Griiffith. He was awesome tonight. He presented and defended the design against some dispute, but he talked at some length about how my properties are surrounded on, literally, four sides by the Univ of VA. UVA doesn't know how to to do retail or residential. We do.
The BAR, after wading through a bunch of mundane issues, seemed to enjoy talking about this project. We got preliminarely approval for this portion of the project.
I never ever expected to get involved in the real estate business. But it is new looking like some 200,000 sq ft of retail, office and residential space. Not bad for a redneck who can't even spell his name right. Jonh

The May 14th post here at the Nautical File made me smile.

The Marine Engineer (foodie friend of mine) has a way with words. I can feel the North Atlantic fog after reading his latest posting.

Great news, rjb! Congratulations!

"...preliminary approval..."
Does this mean you will have to go back to the same board again?

Yesterday, a PM exchange with FreeDuck reminded me of the afternoon I had coffee with her, Mr.Duck, her son Duckie and her daughter Ducklet. Ducklet, age 5 I think, has discovered spelling, and is very enthusiastic about it. All throughout the afternoon, she kept scribbling words on a piece of paper, showed them to us, and asked if she spelled them right. After some inane words that she was especially fond of, Ducklet spelled this:
DUCKLETLOVESDUCKIE FreeDuck: "Awww -- Duckie, come over here, look what your sister just spelled!" Duckie (looking, pretending not to care): "Ducklet, you need to leave more space between words. Your writing is very hard to read."
Ah, yes ... brothers and sisters .... I had totally had forgotten that I used to be like this with my sisters, so I wanted to capture the moment in this thread.

Me too. The topic was spelling, so he gave helpful, on-topic advice.

Laughing Thomas, thanks for posting that. It made me smile. And thanks for not telling everyone that she loves to spell potty words.

These kids have to meet sometime. Sozlet has been going crazy with Sculpey, making a zillion things. Her latest creation? "A butt, pooping."
