If you're interested, Slappy, here's "hard man" Roy Keane in action. Punch his name into youtube and you'll get loads of hits, he's that well known over here.....

Clive's got his job back!

Flippin' bureaucrats had lost some of his paperwork, causing him to have
to wait over a month. But now he is back to work and feeling good about
himself.

Sozlet lost her third tooth yesterday. She lost the first two long enough that the permanent teeth have grown in, and she just has one gap where the most recently lost tooth used to be. When she arrived at school, she grinned at her teacher who immediately said, "WOW, you lost your tooth!! Yay!!" It made me smile that the teacher got it right away and was so enthusiastic.

Yeah? Well just make sure that she doesn't hug and rub her face into anybody's bosom other than yours.

What made me smile today? Getting our Toys for Tots shopping done and into the bin before Wednesday's deadline. Very Happy

I hear ya, eoe.

Yesterday I did Pancakes with Santa at the Clubhouse. I had also set up an angel tree for residents to select and bring a toy to the Pancake Breakfast to donate to Toys for Tots.

Just as the event was about to start, up walked two Marines in full dress to stand beside Santa and the tree and accept the gifts the residents brought. (first smile - wasn't sure if they would be available until they arrived)

About an hour into the event, one of the marines said he was going to have to go back to the office to get a bigger van to haul off all of the toys donated. (second smile)

As he was leaving through the back door we saw that someone(s) had donated two bikes, fully assembled, and a little tykes car and left them in the back hallway. (third smile)

And, of course, I got to sit on Santa's lap. (Dirty grin)

Eoe, how did you find the drop-off place and the deadline? squinney, good for you for being involved... do you have any links for me, either? (I found toysfortots2006.com but they only provide an email address, not location or deadline for Columbus. Can write to the person at the email address if need be.)

I have four big wonderful teddybears (extras from Sozlet's birthday party) that I want to give to Toys for Tots, but I'm not finding much online.

PUBLIX grocery stores are one of the drop-off places here in Ga. Often a retail chain like Best Buys or Circuit City will have a drop-off bin. I recall having to pay close attention to tv and radio ads to hear where to drop off because the websites don't give much info at all. Just imagine the number of people who give up because of that???

That's great Squinney. Very pleased that the Marines showed up. What an impressive sight that must have been, all decked out in uniform and standing next to Santa.

Who played Santa? Don't tell me... Shocked

Try This link of Ohio Drop Off Locations

Or go to Toysfortots.org home page and click on Find a local campaign office.

This community does charity all year. We run for the Food Bank, have a Casino Night for cancer, sponsor families in need, do a spring triathlon for leukemia, etc. It's a great community for that, so putting things together (my job) is easy knowing they'll participate eagerly.

eoe- You're too funny! Who was Santa? hahaha. Santa was Santa, you silly girl! Very Happy

I'll have to see if I can post a pic from yesterdays event. Yeah, it was beautiful! Especially seeing the children walk up to the marines to give them the toys. The marines would kneel down to their level when needed, shich was great!

squinney, that's the same thing I found before -- it has drop-off locations for a lot of other cities but for Columbus there is just an email address. I'll write to that person, I guess.

The Bluejackets hosted a drive but that was over in November.

I agree, eoe, seems like there could be more online resources there and that the lack thereof might hurt them.

Given my experience so far I'm not at all surprised at the drop. I'll see if I can follow up on that though, thanks for the lead! (Maybe I should start subscribing to the Dispatch...)

DONATION SHORTFALL

Marines rush to find more Toys for Tots

By Dean NarcisoTHE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Handwritten on green paper and taped to the back door, a sign saying " Toy Giveaway Has Been Cancelled" was the only news Betty Evans and her family found to explain the disappointment they felt yesterday at the King Arts Complex.

The official explanation ?- that a drop in Toys for Tots donations had left many in the lurch ?- was little consolation.

" I'm disappointed," Evans said. " I think they should've notified people. There are children who are not going to have anything for Christmas."

Also disappointed, but determined to find a solution, is a battle- honed U. S. Marine.

Gunnery Sgt. Shawn Delgado, operations chief for Columbus- based Lima Company, spent 16hour days last week organizing the Marinessponsored Toys for Tots program at the Reserve Center at Rickenbacker.

" We understand that there was a fall- through on the support, and we're doing everything we can to answer the bell," Delgado said. He said the shortfall is the result of fewer corporate, national and local donors, and might be related to a stagnant economy.

On Friday, the last day for individual donations, he learned that a shipment of toys is expected to arrive by Monday and should fulfill all of the requests from needy residents.

Delgado said agencies not already contacted about the update should call 614- 492- 2978 to learn how they can fulfill their requests through the Reserve Center. The national Toys for Tots program serves about 200 organizations in central Ohio, including churches and social- service agencies, which

Toys for Tots organizer screen families to determine their need.

The King Arts Complex is one of those agencies that count on the program to deliver toys.

But the Marines can't fill requests until toys are collected from drop- off points, such as grocery stores, and from Toys for Tots national headquarters in Virginia. On Dec. 8, Delgado received more than 40 pallets of books, candy and toys. But it was not enough. " We got a lot of books, a lot of sugar- free candies and a few toys," he said.

A second shipment was supposed to arrive by Dec. 11 but didn't. The Marines distributed what they could to the organizations early this past week. On Thursday and Friday, they handed out toys to nearly 10,000 children in person.

The shortage has left the sponsoring organizations wondering whether they will be labeled Scrooges.

Jynette Hartfield, organizer of the Spirit of the Word Gospel Church giveaway program, said she received only enough toys for 6- year- old boys on her list, even though she needed toys for more than 1,300 children of all ages.

" This is the third year that they've disappointed my program," Hartfield said of Toys for Tots.

Hartfield said she also received large shipments of sugarfree candy, which she isn't sure what to do with.

She's thinking about donating the candy to a diabetes organization.

Frederica Wallace, director of Columbus LEADS, said some of the cancellation signs directed toy seekers to her agency. The agency isn't sponsoring families on behalf of Toys for Tots.

" I was worried about it being a fiasco if we didn't have some solution," Wallace said. " I was worried about people being lined up around our building and us not being able to be serve them."

Delgado, who is ending his first year as assistant organizer, understands the frustration but says Toys for Tots is taking heat, too.

" We're trying to do this out of the kindness of our hearts. And we're getting beat up over this," Delgado said.

Maybe I'll donate directly to the King Arts complex.

Wrote to the author of the article, will see what he has to say.

Thanks again, Walter. At the very least I'm learning how this all works locally in preparation for next year.

Seeing that Sturgis had replied to Bear's generalized booty call (before I even saw what he'd said.)

Also, a couple of days ago I saw this guy and I wanted to write about him. He was out walking, sort of a clean-shaven version of Gus. White haired, wrinkly, a little stooped but still quite spry. He had on this great sweatshirt but I couldn't remember the phrasing exactly. Just saw him again a few minutes ago, wearing the same sweatshirt: STOP PLATE TECTONICS!
