I'm so relieved that hurricane Katrina missed my son and his family (and Phoenix) near Tampa Bay, Florida, but crying for the victims in the states along the gulf coast.

So many things have made me smile already today. I awoke to a decent day, still alive and knowing my name. I checked the news and saw that although Katrina was bad, very very bad, it had lessened considerably in intensity shortly after making landfall. The sad frown came on as I read of the loss of lives.

Then I Very Happy smiled Very Happy when the plumber solved the drain problem in less than 5 minutes Very Happy Very Happy .

There will be more smiles later I am sure.

I'm smiling because Katrina's a thing of the past. What a bitch!!

I feel so sorry for all the people in Fla. and La. who lost their homes -- or even worse -- their lives!

I just hope and pray that the lives of the survivors can get back to normal as soon as possible.

On my ride home in the subway today, a man sat down on the seat opposite to mine. He was black -- and wore an Adolf Hitler mustache. That was so absurd I had to smile for three stations.

On a related note, maybe this is a good time to weave in an honorable mention of a restaurant I spotted in Galway, Ireland earlier this year. It was called "McNamara's Vietnamese restaurant".

No, nothing like that. It looked as if some Irish guy named McNamara (or Scottish I guess) thought that Galway needed a nicely decorated, middle-market, Vietnamese restaurant. And that he never noticed the irony of his project.

Thomas has a gun to my head saying "I'll wipe that smile off your face you dirty rat." So, I laughed and joined the party.

I'm so happy that this Saturday is the last Saturday the workmen are going to be in my house....

For the last five months they have been there 6 days a week.

It gotten to the end of this project where they'll only be there Mon-Fri and and that, only for maybe another month or so......

I'd have to leave the house on Saturday by 9 am...Wolverines orders, and couldn't come back until after 4pm. Every saturday, for 5 months.

Starting next week I can stay in the house for a while in my t-shirt and underwear as long as I want.

Just thinking about it makes me sigh with relief......

The first footage on CNN of the truck loads of food and water being brought in for the folks in New Orleans, people being picked up and brought to better places, folks eating, drinking and even smiling.

Amen to that!

I hiked three mountain peaks today. It was a brutal 6.5-7 hour hike that I was sadly unprepared for, but man-o-man I am glad I did it.

Of course Galway needs a Vietnamese restaurant - I might be there again next year, and I love Vietnamese food. It was sadly missing last time.

It's what my suburb needs too! There's about 10 Thai restaurants within a 3-mile vicinity, not to mention a squillion Italian, but nary a Vietnamese Evil or Very Mad
