For me today, Farmerman takes the cake. Please read the second to the last post on page 2 of "Shelter dog housebreaking issues" under Pets & Garden.

Ugh.... they say that only 10% of people who 'discover' loved ones dead do so in thier own homes.
I could not imagine. My mother in law was home for a few hours looking for her husband. Walked right by his body god knows how many times. She called me and my husband to give her a ride to the local college to see if he stayed late or maybe went to the hospital from school and someone could tell her. I walked in the house and smelled him. He died early that morning . Sad and yet strange how we dont notice things like that when it is someone we are looking for. She didnt notice a thing when she walked in and didnt even see him on the floor. I walk in and I know right away. Denial is a strong thing. I think it is a survival tactic too. I cant imagine what she would have done had she found him when she walked in the house. I feel horrible for people who have gone through that in thier lives. I dont think that is anything anyone should have to endure.

I remember working at a nursing home and discovered a dead resident in the lobby. There were staff and visitors all around and she'd been there for hours, since rigor had set in already. Being the start of my shift, I casually wheeled her to the Nurse's station and told the nurse. Unfortunately, she lost her cool, being a sweet, young thing fresh from nursing school. I was the one called into the Director of Nursing Office and was chewed out by the DON for being insensative! Surprised I left a week later for a job with a "nursing pool", where I could pick and choose my assignments and get better pay and treatment.

Oh my god! How horrible! I cant imagine being in that situation. I have worked in nursing homes for 9 years.. found many people unfortunatly. But if I had been in your shoes.. my temper would have gotten me in a lot of trouble. You seem to be able to keep your cool pretty well. Im sorry that happened to you though. Sounds like you were not working with people who belong in the nursing field

Dear Friends,

We seem to have gotten side tracked on the subject of death.
I have held the hands of the dying and smiled when they passed on. I have rejoiced in my heart, knowing that they were beyond all pain, suffering and fear. Dear friends have died in preventable, senseless "accidents". I did not weep for them, but for their families and loved ones. We miss the physical presence of the departed. In truth they are not gone, for they live forever in our hearts and memories. Smile and remember their lives and how they touched your's

I am smiling today because my daughter has her first tooth!!!!!

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Exclamation Very Happy Exclamation Very Happy Exclamation

I took her for our morning walk like usual and for some reason she was cooing ALOT and chattering more then usual. When I got home, I was wiping her off with a wet cloth to help cool her down and she gave me the biggest smile... and there it was.... her little molar!!! I think I scared the crap out of her because I squealed and laughed. She liked to have jumped right out of her diaper. It was cute!
OOOHhhhh.. parenthood is proving to be a smile a day. What a wonderful job it is.
Anyone else have a cute baby story that made you smile today? Smile

Great idea sam. I agree. Death , though extremely misunderstood is all too often a relief and a gift. Aside from that , depending on your religious or personal beliefs , death of the body can mean more opportunities later on in another body or life. THAT is always worth a smile. :-)

shewolf - that is such an amazing milestone re: tooth - I know how you feel!

Such a poignant juxaposition in these last few posts - witnessing an isolated death and embracing the new beginnings of humanity.

What made me smile today? I just received an email from a friend who I have not heard from in 8 months - it made me smile - BIG TIME!

I smiled when I hugged Sam this morning, then three cats and two of the pups had to say "Good morning", the cats by rubbing me and purring their "special" purr, the pups by washing our faces and resting their heads on us.

Oh! The sun is shining for the third day in a row!! Very Happy Shocked It's the first time in over a month that that's happened.

Sitting out in the back yard with Sam, having coffee, eating some bananananana bread and watching the pups. That made me smile too.

Later, I looked at some of the flowers that are in bloom in my flower bed and wondered at their beauty. The wild roses, columbine and triulium that I transplanted from our bad yard have survived and seem to be doing well. Surprised I need to take some photos and post them. I have some photos of the triliums and wild blue violets in bloom that came out well. Seeing the results on Sam's computer was neat too. Cool

So, the day's been neat and full of smiles. Now, we go to the home improvement center and get supplies for the back entry, that we framed up last fall. Then, hopefully, we'll have decent weather for finishing it, but it's nice to imagine.

OK I'm going to break my own "no politics" rule for this thread. But its a special case.

Just now I was watching the ad online that my party, the Green Left, made for the European elections last week. Its a 3-minute associative string of images - no speeches, no talking heads, just visual reminders and metaphors and beautiful music - Marlene Dietrich singing "Where have all the flowers gone" (you gotta look at it with the music). The way a green flag or poster very rarely kind of pops up like an afterthought - ah, almost coincidence.

It was broadcast in full in the commercial break ahead of the news the night before the elections - musta cost a fortune (to dutch standards), who knows whether it helped some. In any case its good agitprop - without using any words, they get me feeling a lump in my throat, an urge to slam my fist on the table, and an underlying sense that, you know, thats us in there - thats me. My people. Plus, its just cute.

Watch it online [EDIT:] paste this in to your browser: mms://wm1.xs4all.nl/groenl/groenlinks-web.wmv or go here and click "campagne film (wmv)"

(Department of details: in case you're wondering, the rainbow "Pace" flags you'll see are the Italian anti-war flags that are now all over the continent. And the sunflower is the symbol of the European Greens.)
