We are entering, I suspect, upon a time of troubles. It is not just the terrorists, the bankers, and the climate that are going to wreak havoc with our sense of security and stability. Globalization itself—the “flat” earth of so many irenic fantasies—will be a source of fear and uncertainty to billions of people who will turn to their leaders for protection. “Identities” will grow mean and tight, as the indigent and the uprooted beat upon the ever-rising walls of gated communities from Delhi to Dallas.

Being “Danish” or “Italian,” “American” or “European” won’t just be an identity; it will be a rebuff and a reproof to those whom it excludes. The state, far from disappearing, may be about to come into its own: the privileges of citizenship, the protections of card-holding residency rights, will be wielded as political trumps. Intolerant demagogues in established democracies will demand “tests”—of knowledge, of language, of attitude—to determine whether desperate newcomers are deserving of British or Dutch or French “identity.” They are already doing so. In this brave new century we shall miss the tolerant, the marginals: the edge people. My people.

Some of us were honest and said we would never vote for her. I didn't vote for her. She's not a true progressive. She's a war monger and she caters to big money interests. She wouldn't accomplish anything other than moving the Democratic party further to the right. I didn't vote for Trump either, but he was the only other major party choice and the majority of voters cast their vote for Trump because THEY DIDN'T WANT HILLARY.

Yes, it's a global protest against globalisation. We don't want it. They don't get it.

No matter how much control they have over the MSM (hell, CNN was pushing a Clinton win down to the death) many still see through the BS.

They say the Clintons hadn't even entertained the possibility of losing, so they didn't have a concession speech prepared.

She speaks tomorrow.

How hated must she be????

Minus 66 votes, Lash? That's gotta be some kind of record. Bravo. :-)

I have a question: Were the polls just all very wrong - or were they massaged by Clinton-influenced pollsters? How could they be so wrong?

I caught a quick chat between one of our more seasoned political analysts, Laurie Oakes, with wild-card presenter Karl Stefanovic, and a US political analyst, who stated on 9 news that a wikileaks email showed how Hillary's advisers said that she'd save billions on campaign costs by supporting Trump's candidacy.

Laurie Oakes' jaw was almost on the floor. Stefanovic quickly covered that up, and it's now gone from their website.

Interesting.

I'm quitting making rude posts about Trump and voting down his fan boys on here. I don't want the Gestapo knocking on my door one day.

@contrex,
I've been working on figuring out how to never have to look at his face again, in articles particularly. Since I don't have a tv, I don't have to worry about seeing him on it, but I suppose I could run into him in a video someone posts.

I think he's a megalomaniac. But a protest vote is the only thing that could change the status quo, and he was the only other "viable" candidate.

On our triple J radio yesterday, a correspondent was skyping the "mood" from a bar in Texas. Despite the state being predominantly supporters of the GOP, the mood was kind of gloomy.

I hope your party reacts like a Labrador finally catching a car...now that you've got it, you have no idea what to do with it.

I hope you decide that locking up Hillary is a wise political move. I really do.

Hillary had too much baggage about trust that did her in.

This does seem true but do you think that the DNC could be the bigger problem?
Did they do anything wrong? Could they have not colluded with so many that we could of had a candidate that could have beat Trump or do you think he was seen as the best candidate for president?

@Lash,
The opinion of "a Republican National Committeeman from Arkansas who supported Trump" is declarative about statistical issues now?
