I became a football fan in 1964. The recent events have diminished my involvement significantly. The only reason I don't stage a personal boycott is rooted in the fact even the players whose views I support will be hurt. Plus, I won't strike out at players who see it the other way. If I knew how to influence the owners without hurting the lives of players I would do it.

The players protesting has diminished your involvement? I would have thought you'd support the players and the league who defended their right to do it on the field (until yesterday, now they have to protest off field - which wasn't allowed before).

I have a hazy memory of an article I read last evening, but a coach or team authority has decided to pay all fines against his players if they choose to kneel.

Jets, I think.

I consider him a hero.

When did kneeling become a sign of disrespect?

Look at Patrick Stewart treating Liz terribly, he might just as well be telling her to eff off.

Donald Trump said today:

“I don’t think people should be staying in the locker rooms, but still I think it’s good,” he said. “You have to stand proudly for the national anthem, or you shouldn’t be playing, you shouldn’t be there. Maybe you shouldn’t be in the country. You have to stand proudly for the national anthem.”

MAYBE you should be IN the country.

God I can't believe what I hear sometimes.

@maporsche,
The only thing worse that reading or listening to the words out of the president's mouth (twitter fingers) is hearing and reading the defense of those words.

@revelette1,
I agree. It's so fucked up... The kneelers are trying to highlight a tragedy in order to save lives. They are not traitors, on the contrary they are trying to contribute to society, in a rather dignified manner I'd say.

I am so disgusted the NFL owners I can't really comment yet. Trump and Pence's gloating is just hard to stomach. I know why the owners did it, but they are wrong.
Why is it wrong for the owners to reject thugs who want police officers to be defenseless when black people try to murder them?

I think he is saying that he is diminishing his involvement in response to the actions against the players.

How is it heroic to try to render police officers defenseless when black people try to murder them?

It is reasonable for Trump and his supporters to argue that police officers should be allowed to defend themselves when black people try to murder them.

Hardly. They are calling for police officers to be prevented from defending themselves when black people try to murder them.

I'd say "thug" is the best term for these people.

How exactly does murdering police officers contribute to society?

@oralloy,
That just happened less than 24 hours ago and there is no football going on right now.

That doesn't make much sense.

Here's what Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr had to say today about the NFL's decision to fine player who kneel during the national anthem:

“They weren’t disrespecting the flag or the military. But our president decided to make it about that and the NFL followed suit, pandered to their fanbase, created this hysteria. This is kind of what’s wrong with our country right now. People in high places are trying to divide us, divide loyalties, make this about the flag as if the flag is something other than what it really is. It’s a a representation of what we’re about, which is diversity, peaceful protests, abilities, right to free speech. It’s really ironic, actually."

Once again, Kerr articulates the true meaning of patriotism better than our current president. Your thoughts?

Excerpt:

Mountain View, CA — At least a dozen Google employees have resigned in protest over the company collaborating with the Department of Defense by supplying artificial intelligence for a controversial military pilot program for the DoD known as Project Maven, after thousands of employees signed a letter last month asking the company to cancel the Pentagon contract and institute a policy against working for the military.

‘We can no longer ignore our industry’s and our technologies’ harmful biases, large-scale breaches of trust, and lack of ethical safeguards. These are life and death stakes,” the petition read.

truth in media
Project Maven, developed to scan images in drone footage and identify targets and classify images of objects and people— was launched in April 2017, and according to a Pentagon memo, aims to “augment or automate Processing, Exploitation and Dissemination (PED) for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in support of the Defeat-ISIS campaign” in order to “reduce the human factors burden of [full motion video] analysis, increase actionable intelligence, and enhance military decision-making.”

More than 1,000 academics and researchers penned an open letter in support of the Google employees and calling on the company to cease work on Project Maven. The letter touches on the implications of Google working with the Pentagon:

@Lash,
I'm unsure which side you think we should be fighting against.

This sounds like a good project though. What if we manage to identify one of the remaining al-Qa'ida leaders with one of these drones?

@edgarblythe,
I come from a family of veterans, none of them want other American's freedom of expression banned. Even Gen. Hayden has said he backs the football players right to expression. This is America Folks, it's time to remember why so many of our forefathers fought and died to keep this nation free. Not free to be controlled by tyrants.

Stabbed at a neo-Nazi rally, called a criminal: how police targeted a black activist
Quote:
Gedric O’Bannon tried to ignore the sharp pain in his side and continue filming. The independent journalist, who was documenting a white supremacist rally in Sacramento, said he wanted to capture the neo-Nazi violence against counter-protesters with his GoPro camera.

But the pain soon became overwhelming. He lifted up his blood-soaked shirt and realized that one of the men carrying a pole with a blade on the end of it had stabbed him in the stomach, puncturing him nearly two inches deep. He limped his way to an ambulance.

But the police did not treat O’Bannon like a victim. Records obtained by the Guardian reveal that officers instead monitored his Facebook page and sought to bring six charges against him, including conspiracy, rioting, assault and unlawful assembly. His presence at the protest – along with his use of the black power fist and “social media posts expressing his ideals” – were proof that he had violated the rights of neo-Nazis at the 26 June 2016 protests, police wrote in a report.

None of the white supremacists have been charged for stabbing O’Bannon.
[...]
O’Bannon’s case is the latest example of police in the US targeting leftwing activists, anti-Trump protesters and black Americans for surveillance and prosecution over their demonstrations and online posts. At the same time, critics say, they are failing to hold neo-Nazis responsible for physical violence.

@oralloy,
I don’t know if your pat responses to BLM issues are intentionally one-sided due to overwhelming bias, or if you’re completely unable to look at this issue dispassionately without bias.

But you are so far from the reality of what’s actually happening.
